702.0. "Dehydration" by GBMMKT::VACCHELLI (Authority always wins) Mon Jul 17 1989 11:43

Lately I have been having problems with severe headaches. A friend
of mine suggested that it could be due to dehydration. I need to
know so facts on water retention and how I can get my body water
back up to a level that is healthy without being bloated or having
to eat foods with high salt content.

Drink *LOTS* of water. I drink at least 2 1/2 quarts of water a
day at work, and more when I'm at home. To check if you're
drinking enough, you should be urinating at least 4 times a day.
Another thing to check is the color of your urine (I know, it's
harder for women, but you can do it.) If you think you have a
problem with dehydration, aim to keep your urine almost clear
    ("water white").

Of course, since you are having headaches, the other thing to keep
track of is whether water helps your headaches. I find that
dehydration can cause my headaches. (So can low blood sugar, and
some people have problems with heavy necklaces pressing on the
    back of their neck.

    Good luck finding a cure.

I'd say see a doctor about the headaches....and ask THEM about what
your body's water level is. Also, if you drink plenty of water, your
body should be able to utilize what it needs, and flush what it doesn't
(and by plenty I mean 8-10 8 oz. glasses a day). You could also ask
this question in the MEDICAL notesfile.

I used to drink too much coffee. That gave me headaches.

Drinking plenty of water is good for you, but there are so many
other things which can cause headaches that you might wind up
floating around DEC before you decide if the "more water" routine
is the cure for them. Chocolate, nuts, wheat products will set
    off headaches for me.

Not to mention stress. And the barometric pressure can play havoc
    with lots of people.

I could not help but laugh over David's
answer only because I can't imagine drinking that much water and
*ever* getting out of the Women's Room!

If and when you do decide to drink more water at work, do not increase
the amount of salt you intake. Drinking 64oz. of water a day will
not make you bloated if there is no extra salt in your body since
salt draws water into the cells.

But don't drink that 64 oz. all at once -- that would play hob
    with your electrolytic balance.

702.7I think the salt in your cells gets too dilute.REGENT::BROOMHEADDon't panic -- yet.Tue Jul 18 1989 17:5311
Sigh. I can't really explain, because *I* don't understand that
much about physiology. However, there was a recent note in the
BIOLOGY notefile that talked about sweating, and salt, and the
osmotic pressure between the inside and outside of the cells, and
*they* seemed to understand what they were talking about.

In brief, what I was say was: Moderation in this, as in all things.
Or you'll louse yourself up. Besides, you don't really want to
drink a two liter bottle of water all at once, do you?
