686.0. "Joining NH NOW" by PROSE::BLACHEK () Wed Jul 05 1989 16:28

    I'm the treasuer of NH NOW. I've been meaning to put this note in
    since the April march, but just haven't. The previous note reminded me
    to put this in.

    If you would like to join NH NOW, please send me mail. NH NOW has the
    following active chapters:

    Nashua, Exeter, Rockingham County (meets in Derry),and Dover/Portsmouth
    area

    The Keene and Manchester chapters are currently inactive. We are
    trying to find members to make them active. We have people interested
    in starting new chapters near Dartmouth and in Peterborough.

    If you join on the state level you get the state newsletter, the
    National NOW Times, and MS magazine. If you join a chapter, you get
    the chapter newsletter, in addition to what I've listed here.

    Dues are $35, but there is a sliding scale. I can send you our recent
    newsletter, which includes a membership blank.

    Now is the time. We need big numbers to keep this fight going.

    Judy

    I'll try them tomorrow and if I get anywhere I'll post it here and
    include a new note so folks can find it.

    Maybe it is time for NOW to have a real membership drive. I wonder if
    they even did this before? People just don't know how to join. How can
    we get the word out?

686.7Open House in NashuaPROSE::BLACHEKThu Jul 13 1989 12:0612
    The Nashua chapter of NH NOW is holding an Open House/Call for Action
    meeting on Wednesday, August 2, at the Unitarian Church on Canal Street
    in Nashua.

    New members, friends, etc. are welcome. And you don't have to be from
    Nashua. If you are from Manchester, please come since you're chapter
    does not meet.

    It starts at 7:00. We are trying to get some speakers together. I'll
    update it if we get some to come.

    The Unitarian Church is near the intersection with Main St., on the
    left as you drive east towards Hudson.

    NOW = National Organization for Women

    re: .8

    The actual address for the church is on 58 Lowell Street. The building
    is large, right across from the Indian restaurant on Canal Street, and
    is on both Canal and Lowell streets. There are a maze of streets there
    that are one-way. The easiest way to go may be to take the first left
    after the Indian restaurant, (that is either a regular street or a
    one-way in the right direction) then take the first left down an alley.
    At the end of the alley take a left and then an immediate right into the
    parking lot of the school part of the church.

    See you there!

re .10

 It may sound silly -- but you're definitely NOT alone. I recently called the
number posted here for Boston NOW. The phone conversation went like this:

her:   Hello

me: Hi, Is this the National Organization for Women?

her: Just a minute, let me check

her (after a pause) This is Boston NOW (i.e.-- she still wasn't quite sure).
                      May I help you?

   I guess there have been LOTS of new volunteers. It feels good.

    to pick a nit..
    the FOR in National Org. for Women is I think VERY important
    Often the papers, tv, etc verbalize the acronym as the National
    org. OF women....WRONG...its FOR women, and the organization is
    made up of both women and men, who are struggling to promote equality
    for women, ...
    THe correct acronym verbalization is sometimes an important
    reminder that we are all in this together...

    sorry for the rathole!

Didn't NOW start out as National Organization *Of* Women and changed their
name some years ago? I remembered a news story about this.

Are men still labelled "auxilliary members"?

686.16in my experience...IAMOK::ALFORDI'd rather be fishingFri Jul 28 1989 09:128
    re: for vs. of

    Well, for the 12 years I've been affiliated with NOW it's been
    *FOR* , and men have NOT been auxilliary members, but rather
    regular ones.

686.17RAINBO::TARBETI'm the ERAFri Jul 28 1989 10:485
    But Steve is correct, there was a name change from "of" to "for", and
    it was done explicitly to be inclusive of men. I can't remember when
    it happened, exactly, 1975 seems to ring a faint bell.

686.18PROSE::BLACHEKTue Aug 01 1989 14:3411
    Interesting stuff...this of/for issue.  I'm glad we are FOR...it
    doesn't make sense to me to be OF women and exclude men.

    Anyway, the Nashua chapter is meeting tomorrow night, Wednesday, August
    2. David Cote, who is on the board of the NH ACLU, will speak briefly
    on the Supreme Court's Webster decision and the upcoming cases that
    will be heard this fall.

    I hope to see some of you there. Please introduce yourself to me!

686.19An end to complacencyQUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centThu Aug 03 1989 00:0813
    Tonight I took up Judy's invitation and attended the NH NOW "open
    house" in Nashua. The turnout was impressive - some 50 people, and
    at least half a dozen familiar names and faces from Digital.
    The emphasis was on what each of us could do, and that even the little
    things like writing letters help. We were also shown a videotape of
    the Turner progran "Abortion for Survival", which I had not seen
    previously. It was excellent, rational and powerful. I hope more
    people get to see this.

    I was pleased to see that NOW encourages men to participate and
    join in the fights for issues that affect men as well as women.

686.20Other meetings...PROSE::BLACHEKThu Aug 03 1989 10:2015
    We were more than pleased with the turnout. It shows what a little
    work and a big issue will do.

    A reporter from the Nashua Telegraph was there. She is doing a story
    for Sunday, August 13th on how the local pro-choice and anti-abortion
    sides are doing after the Webster decision with getting new members.

    On a side note, the NH NARAL office is holding a similar meeting next
    Tuesday. It will be at the Nashua Public Library, on August 8, at 7:00
    p.m.

    Nashua Area NOW's next meeting is on September 25 at the Nashua Public
    Library, also at 7:00.
