639.0. "Why, oh why ?" by LASHAM::WILSON_D (string) Mon Jun 12 1989 08:41

Last week I ran a presentation skills seminar for a group of Digital
people and was reminded of the following experience.

A little while ago I was asked to help the wife of a VP of a large
corporation; it was customary for the VP's wife to make a short
speech at the annual dinner. She was nervous and wanted to rehearse.

We did several rehearsals which went well - the final one to be in
the expensive dress she planned to wear. It soon became clear that
she could not project her voice in her dress. The reason, we
discovered, was the very long boned bra she wore restricted her
ribs/lungs. She had to wear it because the *dress* shape and her
*shape* did not coincide. Her solution was a new, spacious dress !

Why do people still think beauty and discomfort go together ?

Why do people think beauty and discomfort go together?

Don't ask me but ask the owners of shoe stores. I had a problem
with my leg for a couple of years. The doctor told me to wear flat
shoes. I have never returned to heals. I feel so mush better in
flats. It really makes a difference. Also there are comfortable
clothes that are really pretty. Alot of oversized and loose styles
    are really hot now.

while I certainly try and always dress in a presentatble and
professional manner, I defintely have a "soft" approach and rarely
if ever wear a suit (a by-product also of no longer earing the size
I bought what few suits I own..).

I teach in a customer training environment and CANNOT move if I
am "trussed up". And if I am constantly adjusting and holding
stomach/upper body stiff, it certainly detracts from my ability
to use my body effectively in presentation.

ever try to write on a white board that was placed for a 6'4" person
    when you are 5'3???

Standing on my feet most of the day also rules out serious heels!
Most of my female customers remark on how comfortable my flats look,
    and respect my sensiblity.
