638.0. "Ovulation and temperature" by BALMER::MUDGETT (did you say FREE food?) Mon Jun 12 1989 00:19

    Greetings fellow noters,

If you've ever been on site with field engineers when we have a
dead system that is spewing information endlessly but none of them
can figure out what the error messages mean you'll understand my
    dilema.

Well my wife and I have been doing the temperture thing to figure
out when she's ovulating. Well we charted it and sure enough the
number goes up fairly predicatably and then back down again. Tragically
neither my wife or I can agree on what that means in relation to
ovulation. Any books I've looked into can give explicit details
on how to have sex on the back side of the moon but nothing about
the other reason to have sex you know to have kids?

Oh well, if any of you out there stayed awake during biology class
maybe you can solve this dilema.

    Hi Fred

Try the book written Dr. Lundrum B. Shettles called "How to choose the
sex of your baby". The book is very informative and tells you in
detail about Basal Body Temperature and other methods by which one can
determine the ovulation to get pregnant and how you can choose the sex
of your baby.(Its not guaranteed though!!)

    Regards
    Geetha

638.2In brief...AKOV13::MACDOWELLMon Jun 12 1989 09:3915
If everything is proceeding "normally",Ovulation is preceeded by a sharp
DROP in temperature. After ovulation there is a sharp RISE. The
temperature then stays elevated for about two weeks, then if no
pregnancy has occurred, it will drop, followed by menstruation.
If it stays up longer than 16 days, you're probably pregnant.
If it falls sooner than two weeks, there could be a hormone problem
    interferring with implantation.

The fact that the rise occurs after ovulation, means you have to
hit it on the "upswing" so to speak. Eggs have a short shelf life,
about 24 hours, so if you wait til after the temperature's risen,
    its probably too late.

    Hope this helps.

If you are having intercourse after the rise in temperature, then
you are practicing rhythm. You should have intercourse every other
day from the point that the temperature drops (or if she is very
regular, the day before) til the day after the rise. This is because
they really aren't sure where on that temperature swing ovulation
actually occurs. The idea is that by having intercourse every other
day, the sperm will be there when the egg is released. It is not
done every day to allow the sperm to be plentiful and healthy.

A good book to read is "How to Get Pregnant" by Sherman Silber.

If you would like more information about the whole process, I would
be glad to share some of my limited knowledge with you. Just send
    me mail.

There is, of course, a computer you can buy, called the "Rabbit"
ovulation computer - complete with temperature probe and all....
probably very expensive and it replaces something you can do yourself
    given the proper information...

Of course, I'd also suggest "How To Get Pregnant"......oh, by the
way, it also has a companion volume (VERY good) called "How NOT
    to get Pregnant"...

638.6Ovulation Predictor KitsCLUSTA::KELTZThu Jun 15 1989 18:535
There are also ovulation predictor kits that can be purchased
over the counter at most drug stores. They are basically urine
tests that check the level of luteinizing hormone, which does
a healthy rise 12-36 hours BEFORE ovulation. Cost is about
    $25 for a 5-day kit or $40 for 10 days.

Hey guess who's going to have a child?! We are!! We are delighted
even though we already have 3 kids and we are both getting up there
(my wife is 34 and I'm 37) geeze I feel younger than I've felt in
years. My wife was delighted now she is really really sick of being
pregnant! Its been a long time since the last time and we are both
    somewhat fussier now.

Now how did we chart this ovulation wise? It looks like 7 days after
the end of my wife's period was when she ovultated and her temprature
    went up.

    Thanks again for the help

638.9The results are in!BALMER::MUDGETTHe's reading notes again, Mom!Sat Mar 10 1990 08:1331
We had the baby that was suspected in .7 yesturday. A boy, we named
him Timothy, he weighed 9lbs 4ozs.

    Some thoughts follow:

My wife had labor induced. I thought the class said that this sends
her quickly into labor. Wrong, I found out, this inducing thing
can take a long time also. In our case 6 hours. I had plans for
    the afternoon!

We found out the sex of the baby early with the sonagram. What a
great invention! I'm not wild about surprizes, give me the news
and let me get used to whatever the results are. Also (there must
be a message here) when the baby was coming out of my wife he urinated.
Must be we've created a rebel!

We had our last child almost 10 years ago. Things have improved
in the hospitals. We had a birthing room with a TV, all the medical
machinery needed for giving birth, a reclining chair for those of
us who need to relax and lots of privacy. Someone is doing there
homework with these changes, the whole experiance is still pretty
miserable for the women but these changes help as much as possiable.

Finally, when Joan started having serious contractions she asked
me to go tell the nurse to get the anas*()&*(^&* you know the person
who gives epidurals. She was between contractions and I thought
we needed something to remember so I told her in a minute I had
to go to the bathroom first. She said these things are really starting
to hurt! I said I've REALLY got to go BAD!
