615.0. "Romantic Getaways" by WJO::COOK (Shadows Of Another Day) Mon May 22 1989 11:20

I was interested in taking my SO away on a romantic getaway... I don't
much as far as money goes, so it can't be too expensive, but I'd like
it to be secluded, scenic, and romantic.... does any one have any
    ideas???

In volume one of womannotes I started a note #201 Titled "Once
Upon a Dream" asking for nice, inexpensive ideas for our 20th wedding
    anniversary.

615.2a vermont weekend might be niceTOOK::TWARRENStand in the place where you work...Mon May 22 1989 12:229
Had an incredibly romantic weekend in Vermont. It was during the winter,
but Vermont is always beautiful in the summer. We stayed at a nice
place in Manchester, VT, (out near Stratton), which was a bit expensive-
(had a fireplace), but there were lots of less expensive places.

It is beautiful in the summer, to hike, and visit the shops, without
the disadvantages of all the crowds you get at the beaches.

Right up the mountain from Manchester, Vt. is a lodge called
Kandahar, at the foot of Big Bromley. The Appalachian and Long
Trails run right by, a bit below is a *fantastic* view of the
    valley.
615.4Newport, RI??WFOV11::GONCALVESMon May 22 1989 18:587

What about Newport, RI? What could be better than staying
in a bed and breakfast inn and then sightseeing at the
    	famous mansions?

That's what we're going to do the weekend of June 10th for
a delayed anniversary gift to ourselves.
615.5"ROCKPORT...ROMANTIC AND INEXPENSIVE"JETSAM::CONTIGlory daysWed May 24 1989 16:4711
The Cape Ann Motel in Rockport........Its just a plain room but
its right on the beach...very clean, and not expensive. You can
walk through downtown Rockport with all its little shops and at
night drive to Glouster for some fantastic inexpensive seafood.
There are 1 or 2 lounges there with entertainment as well.
The best part though is being right on the beach and being able
to take long walks and hear the waves throughout the night in
your room. One of THE most romantic weekends Ive ever had,and
somewhat inexpensive too.......you wont be disappointed !!!!!

But wait a few more weeks. Most of the stores etc. are just opening up
this weekend and when I was there last week it was still quite a bit
nippy. There's also quite a few bed-and-breakfasts in Rockport,
although they might already be getting pretty well booked.

I went to Rockport on vacation with a friend a few years ago and we had
the bestest time there, but if you're into beaches then this ain't the
place. In general its quite rocky and not suitable for night walking.

Ah, but it's much more romantic before the crowds so up. BTW, if
champagne is part of your romantic plans, be aware that Rockport is
    a "dry" town.

Before my first daughter was born, my husband and I promised ourselves
a weekend away per season. We've been pretty good about sticking
to that, even if it's only for one night.

    Some places we've gone...

    	Conway, NH
Dorset, VT (great little playhouse there...)
        Newport, RI
        Block Island

    	The Cape (better off-season)

Last time, we went to the Marriott in Newton for their "getaway
weekend" package. We went out for a Thai dinner in Newton Friday night,
spent Saturday in Cambridge, hung out at the pool a lot, and had
a late brunch Sunday. Very relaxing.

There is an inn in Barre, Mass., that holds murder mystery weekends.

There's also the Berkshires. And the North Shore (stay in Marblehead,
    sightsee in Salem).

In fact, there are inexpensives B&Bs all over New England (oops, are
    you in N.E.?).

Try the Sea Breeze on Block Island -- it's a bed and breakfast. and
    quite lovely.

Or the Shelter Harbor Inn in Westerly RI, about 80/night, but includes
full breakfast (your choice off the menu) and they have a hottub up on
the roof, as well as scrumptous dinners (written up in Gourmet).

    Ah, romance.....

Speaking of romantic weekends - I just booked one the other day
in Gloucester. We're staying in the Honeymoon suite at the Cape
Ann Marina & Resort for $94/night 508-283-2116. Were having dinner
at the White Rainbow - a little gourmet resturant that's soooo
romantic. This is my all time favorite resturant because they treat
you so special - once we went there when I had a broken jaw and they
strained the Maui onion soup and served me just the broth while
my SO indulged in lobster ravioli with cream sauce. Reservations
are suggested (the place is tiny) 508-281-0017. And the final
event that evening will be to attend a play at the Blackburn
Theater 508-283-9410, it's a comedy entitled "A Coupla White Chicks
Sitting Around Talking" it's there until June 25 - the theater is
also tiny and romantic so call ahead and reserve your tickets. The
tourist season is open and it's getting crazy.

    Here's to romance...
