> What are Evelyn Murphy's chances at the Governorship?
(For the benefit of non-Massachusetts area readers, Evelyn Murphy is currently
Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. Michael Dukakis, the current governor
and former presidential candidate, has announced he will not run for reelec-
tion when his term ends in 1990. The initial shuffling in preparation for
the 1990 race has already begun...)
At least one Boston Globe columnist (I forget which one) had a piece on this
the other day. There is a perception that Murphy may share Dukakis's fail-
ing of not being able to respond to current realities, and she is viewed as
being very aloof. This is causing her to be viewed as being very similar
to Dukakis. If Massachusetts's financial woes continue to grow, being in
the current administration will prove to be a liability rather than an ad-
vantage as it normally might.
This subject, by the way, should be of extreme interest to those of you
worried about a woman's right to choose an abortion (no, let's keep the
abortion discussion in 191, please). Of those currently considered to be
viable candidates for the governorship, Murphy is the only one who is una-
bashedly pro choice. The other candidates range from those who waffle over
the issue (I believe Bellotti is one of those) to some who would outlaw
abortion in the state should the Supreme Court allow that at some future
date. Those of us who think abortion choice important should try to (a)
get Murphy to appear more involved, or (b) put forward another pro choice
candidate.

| I'll take Barbara Anderson any day. She would be minding
the store. But no chance, she is much too honest and
competent. I have to admit, I'm not very familiar enough
with Evelen Murphy. A Lt Governor's position tends to bury
one politically. Of course, we don't elect Vice Presidents
either :-);
