597.0. "Book review: "Birth" by N D McKenna" by ODIHAM::PHILPOTT_I (Col. Philpott is back in action...) Mon May 15 1989 10:11
The following are a few samplings from a book review that appeared
in the current 'British journal of Photography'. A friend of mine
showed me a copy of the book, and on the basis of a brief reading
I am taking the liberty of posting this.
"Picturing Pain and Pleasure"
A new book by Nancy Durrell McKenna documents 14 births in
black-and-white.
A taut pregnant belly is beautifully shown on the cover of Nancy
Durrell McKenna's striking new book on "Birth". Its tension is tenderly
felt through the palms of two pairs of hands of the soon-to-be-parents.
This is a fine picture which heralds more than 150 pages of near
compulsive viewing for anyone who shares with Nancy a consuming
passion for one of her favourite topics.
The reader is invited to witness the excitement, exhaustion, pain
and pleasure in connection with 14 different kinds of birth, in
different sorts of situation. I suggest that the whole presentation
is succinctly successful. This book will hold its place generally
and specifically from an obstetric, sociological, psychological,
and of course photographic point of view.
...
Now Nancy has shown us an unveiling, a new awareness, that there
is enlightened help and understanding. There is even an example
of pain transferrance to the father who plays his part fully and
admirably. The scenes are so compelling that you can hear the sounds
of pain turning into the sounds of joy.
The choice of black-and-white for such varied circumstances was
a good idea; a technique which helps unify the book and justifies
intelligent use of lighting and control over printing.
