558.0. "Walk For Hunger '89" by CURIE::ASBURY () Tue Apr 25 1989 16:11

    Hi everybody,

Every year, since 1969, in Boston around this time, a rather
miraculous thing occurs. You may have heard of it. It is the Walk for
Hunger, sponsored by Project Bread. They say:

"We've walked 20 miles a year for 20 years. The original vision,
that an entire community could come together to help - and have
fun helping - has become an inspired vision of a future without
	hunger..."

This year, more than 30,000 people of all ages, sizes, races, colors,
creeds, etc. will walk 20 miles through Boston and surrounding towns
to raise some $2.5 million to provide food for hungry people in
Massachusetts and around the world. I have a list of the organizations
that receive some of the funds from this event.

I have taken part in this event for the last two years and plan to
again, this year. This year's Walk will take place on Sunday, May 7,
a mere 1 1/2 weeks away. If you believe, as I do, that this is a very
worthy cause, and wish to help out, there are a number of ways you can
    do so.

The easiest thing to do is sponsor a walker...

If you want to walk, you need to get ahold of a sponsor form. 2 ways
to do that - find someone with an extra or call Project Bread and ask
for one to be sent to you. I have the phone number for Project Bread,
and would be glad to give it to you. Once you have your sponsor sheet,
you get people to sponsor you. Then, on the morning of the walk, you
head into Boston and sign up at one of the registration tables that
are set up at the beginning of the walk. Then walk!

You don't even *have* to go the whole 20 miles. They have checkpoints
set up every so often (7 all together, I think). At these checkpoints,
they have first aid, water, etc. They also provide transportation to
the end/beginning for those who can't go any further. There is a lunch
stop where they provide stuff like oranges, carrotts, and such stuff.
There are also many places along the way where you can stop and grab
a bite. Also along the way there are many people cheering (especially
as you get close to the end...it's a real trip to walk the last 1/2
mile or so...people lining the walkway cheering and clapping...it's
great...). There's usually one spot where they pass out little rolls
of lifesavers...there's usually a band set up at one place providing
    great up-beat music...

Also, all along the way, there are people who are walking themselves
who are called walking marshalls or something like that. They have
attended a one night course and they provide support, answers,
    encouragement, etc along the way.

Honestly, it is the most incredible feeling to be walking down the
street with 30,000 other people, knowing how much good you are doing.
And the feeling when you finish, even if you only finished part of
the course... There's just nothing like it. I can't even fully express
    my enthusiasm for this event.

    Please, help us fight hunger...

If you want to sponsor a walker, please send mail to me,
    RAZBRY::ASBURY.

If there is anyone interested in walking, who does not want to walk
alone or does not have a friend to walk with or whatever, you are
more than welcome to join my roommate and me. Along with 30,000
    other people...

Thank you very much for your support!

I just saw this note today. (I am sorry that I didn't see it sooner
    - I walked alone.) I walked the whole 20 miles and raised about
$260 for the hungry. Digital should be matching most of that.

This is my second year and it was a great experience. I hope we
can get some Digits together for next year's Walk.
