547.0. "JOURNALIST OR JERK?" by DISCVR::SECRETARY () Fri Apr 14 1989 16:51

    Can anyone refer me to a feminist organization in New Hampshire
    that would like to have a small town "journalist" for lunch???

    I am currently involved in a community action project that has
    organized, incorporated and formally voiced our intention to
    the town and the developers trying to ruin our town.

    Since the town newspapers were having such a free-for-all with
    our group, I wrote a letter to the editor, approved by our
    attorney and financial backers, formally explaining our purpose
    and intent.

    A rebuttal to my letter appeared in the same addition written
    by the "journalist" in question.

    His rebuttal began with...

                 ...WHAT A MENACE PMS IS TO FEMININITY

    I am outraged. I wonder if his response would have been the same
    had my husband signed it.

    I have no intention of dignifying his remarks with a response, but
    would like to see him squirm.

    Copies of the article are available through me or The Salem Record,
    Salem, NH -- Wednesday, April 12th edition.

    Could someone direct me?

    Thanks,

    Debra

         You might try BPW (National Federation of Business
         and Professional Women)...

         You might contact Electra Alessio....Owner/Editor
         of the CARRIAGE TOWNE NEWS for advice on where/how
         to hang him...

         You might try the NH Commission on the Status of
         Women...(Concord)

         You might try contacting the advertisers in his newpaper
         by mailing them the offending letter and several
         pointed pieces of literature about women's
         rights....hurt him in pocketbook since noone is home
         in his mind....ask them if they really want to advertise
         their goods (which are probably bought by 85% women)
         in a newpaper that says such stuff...

    Well, at least you have the satisfaction of having seen him make
    an idiot of himself in public. (Perhaps he's secretly sympathetic
    to your movement and took the opportunity to discredit the opposition.)
    I'm not sure you need to do anything at all. Unless your town is
    full of similarly-thinking jerks, he's seriously embarassed himself.
547.3Try Rockingham NOWPROSE::BLACHEKWed Apr 19 1989 15:5018
    This sounds like something that the National Organization for Women
    would be willing to take on.

    The Rockingham chapter president is:

       Charlotte Lister
       37 Fremont Rd.
       Chester, NH

       887-4185

    They may be willing to organize a boycott of the paper, or a button
    campaign, or a picketing, or whatever.

    If you don't hear from Charlotte, send me mail and I'll discuss
    it with the state NOW president. (I'm the treasurer for NH NOW.)

    This might do more harm than good. A full-scale, organized campaign
    would give more weight to his words than they deserve. (It could
    also serve to make women look like stereotypical humorless, men-hating
    bitches; no point in giving him further grist for his mill.)
547.5probably a stupid idea, huh?ANT::JLUDGATEWiganSat Apr 22 1989 15:2614
    any chance to invite the guy out to lunch and just try to talk to
    him like a human being?

    i'm not saying that this will be true, but maybe, just MAYBE, he
    gets paid to write controversial articles to boost the circulation
    of the publication.

    and if that isn't true, and you see that he is as bad in person
    as he is on paper, then you will have the satisfaction of being
    able to look down at anything that he writes, knowing that you made
    the effort, and that he rejected any attempts to be made a human.

547.6Journalist vs "Journalist"DISCVR::SECRETARYWed May 03 1989 17:2712
    Thank you all for your responses and your direction.

    For those of you who requested copies, I am getting more to
    send out.

    You will be interested to know that I am being interviewed by
    a reporter from the larger newspaper in this area that has
    extensive circulation. She shares my outrage and wants to do
    an article. The interview takes place tomorrow - wish me luck!
