462.0. "Need info on women's support groups - CXO" by SSDEVO::RICHARD (Call Me Mr. Foobar) Tue Feb 21 1989 19:35

I met a woman last week who was divorced last fall, and lost her infant
daughter to her ex a couple of months ago. It seems that at the time he
managed to get a good lawyer involved in the case, at a time when she was
unemployed and could not afford to fight the issue. Anyway, she gave up
the child without a fight, expecting to get her back later after she had
straightened out her personal life.

The court gave her visitation rights, but the ex is currently living in
California, and has told her that he will never let her see the child again
unless she returns to him, along with other threats (according to the woman).
Recently she called a local (Colo. Springs) support group of women who have
lost children to ex-spouses, and the person who talked to her apparently
gave her a heavy dose of reality, to the tune of "Don't expect to get your
child back", and "With future children, you will always have the feeling that
you can lose this one also."

As can be expected, this woman is very upset, and is despairing of ever seeing
her daughter again. I told her that I thought that there was a support group
that could give her some legal and/or emotional support. Does anyone in this
conference know of a Colorado based group she can contact for assistance? I
will pass on any information you can give. Thanks.

/Mike

    Mike,

I'd be happy to talk to her and give referrals. My case
doesn't look as hopeless as hers but I've been going the
court circuit with my ex for over a year now.

I can also give a referral - for a really good lawyer. I don't know any
support groups. Feel free to give her my name if she is interested.
