432.0. "Cellulite:how do YOU get rid of it?!" by BPOV02::MACKINNON () Tue Feb 07 1989 09:08

    OK folks here is an interesting question.

    Does anyone know of a proven method of reducing/eliminating
    cellulite that does not require surgery?

    Yes I diet and excercise, but I still can't seem to get
    rid of it on the back of my thighs. Now I have tried using
    a loofah and a few other things. The latest item was something
    I saw in Lord & Taylor. The name of the product escapes me,
    but the premise was that you put the gel into a little hand
    held massager/buffer(this is a hand held plastic buff puff
    type thing) and you use it the shower or bath.

    Now before I plunk down the $40.00 dollars or so to get
    it, I was wondering if anyone could save me some money and
    give me their ideas on fighting cellulite.

    Save the $40. by not buying the "gel" and put it into a good pair
    of running, walking or aerobic sneakers. And walk/run or aerobicize
    3-4 times a week every week. Drink plenty of water. It works.

432.2Fat by another name ...SQM::MAURERcet adieu ce n'est qu'un au revoirTue Feb 07 1989 11:5515
    I don't believe in cellulite. It's just fat and it's in the hardest
    place to get rid of it -- legs and buttocks.

    I am by no means overweight; I exercise plenty and watch what I eat; I
    have "cellulite". All of these conditions have been true for 4 years now.
    The muscles under the fat are toned up, so I feel much better, but
    it's still there.

    Those massage gels and massage "appliances" (no electricity involved)
    don't do a thing (for me). Someone gave one to me a couple of years
    ago (gee, thanks) and although massage is nice, it doesn't "break up"
    the fat or anything as advertised. (I did get some toning on my arm
    muscles from using it ;-)

    I don't have a weight problem, but I remember reading a couple of
    years ago that those cellulite gels and creams were a racket. I'd
    stay away and follow the previously given advice.

432.4Eat no fat!!PARITY::DDAVISLong-cool woman in a black dressWed Feb 08 1989 11:375
    One more thing you might try...eliminate as much fat from your diet
    as possible. Buy/cook everything low fat. Read labels. It's amazing
    what fat grams are hiding in so called low calorie foods.

432.5Water!!CLOVE::VEILLEUXif you choose not to decide...Wed Feb 08 1989 13:3031
    Another vote for "drink lots of water". I have eaten sensibly and
    exercised regularly for years, but since I've started a serious "water
    regimen" (64-96 oz./day), I've had a noticeable decrease in the
    cellulite that eating right/exercising wouldn't budge.

    Here's why drinking at least 64 oz of _just plain water_ daily helps
    get rid of cellulite:

    Unless you're drinking close to this amount of plain water (coffee,
    soda, other liquids don't count), your body is probably in a state
    of moderate dehydration. You probably don't feel thirsty, because
    in this mode your body shuts off your natural thirst as a defense
    mechanism. Another way your body copes with dehydration is to store
    fat. Without enough water, your kidneys don't function properly
    and offload to the liver, which cannot deal as effectively with
    processing liquid waste, so fat is again stored instead of being
    flushed out as it would through the kidneys. So while your body
    is only doing what it needs to do in its dehydrated state, the result
    is unwanted fat storage (cellulite).

    The first 3-4 days of drinking the 64-96 oz recommended water _are_
    tough - its feels like you're forcing it, you feel bloated, and
    you can't be more than 20 ft. from a bathroom. But after a few
    days your body will adjust, and it really feels normal to drink
    that much. It also helps you eat less, and you may notice an
    improvement in your skin.

    Don't mean to sound like an evangelist, but try it - I know it works!

	 do exercises that specifically work those muscles in that
	 area. Firming up the muscles will make the "cellulite look"
	 disappear (at least it did on me!)

    I'll second the "drink lots of water and exercise daily" routine.
    I've followed this for years, and have never had cellulite anywhere.

    Good luck, and keep us posted--you can do it!
