419.0. "Pro-Choice Letter CAmpaign" by AMUN::LEACH () Fri Jan 27 1989 09:57

I believe in the effect of a massive barrage of mail. Remember
the "Saturday Night Massacre" when Richard Nixon fired
Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox? This action prompted 75,000
letters and telegrams. Within a few days, Nixon resigned.

I'm not suggesting that President Bush resign! But I do think
a large number of letters will have an influence on his position,
which currently reflects only the anti-abortion stand.

Here's a letter I sent to President Bush. A friend suggested
posting it in WOMANNOTES. You can probably do better! But feel
to use this as a basis for your own.

    President George Bush
    The White House
    Washington, DC 20500

    Dear President Bush,

Abortion on demand is NOT the great American tragedy, as you
told the anti-abortion crusaders in Washington. The great
American tragedy is the birth of children who are abused, neglected,
    and starved.

Roe v. Wade was a merciful decision,w hich recognized that anyone
can fertilize an egg, but a child must be brought to term with care
    and thought.

Please use your great influence to leave Roe v. Wade intact. Of
all the places government does NOT belong, it is in the momentous
personal decision to bear and raise a child.

Roe v. Wade does not decree abortion. It allows a choice. It allows
birth by force to those whose religious beliefs find this to be
a moral practice. It allows birth by choice to those who feel that
bearing a child and raising it to maturity is the most important
    choice they can make.

    Sincerely,

    Ann Leach
(Mother of two, foster mother of one)

419.1When is the Pro-choice Rally?NECVAX::CERRETAFri Jan 27 1989 10:4713
Thanks for posting your letter. I have thought about writing a
few letters of my own as well. Who are other appropriate people
to write to?? Conress-people, as well?

I am very seriously interested in participating in the demonstration
I have heard about in this file...(the pro-choice rally which will
be held in Washington in April). Please, please, does anyone know
the details of when and where this will be? Who can I contact for
    more information?

    There IS unity in numbers,

419.3Ann, Right On!USEM::DONOVANFri Jan 27 1989 11:2512
    Ann,

It's so nice to see mothers involved. Throughout the whole campaign
Mr. Bush and Mr. Nit Wit Quayle used the word "mainstream" to explain
their political and moral philosophies. Sixty one percent of the
people believe in a woman's right to choose. How dare they! We are
    mainstream, not a radical fringe.

From another mother...Yes, please post details of the march. I believe
in pro-choice. I wonder if Mr. Bush has ever been really poor. I
do not think that he knows what it feels like to have your child
look at you with big brown or blue eyes and say," Mummy, I'm hungry"
and you have to say," I know, baby, but mummy has nothing for you
    to eat right now."
When Mr. bush can truthfully say that he knows what that feels like,
then and only then can he say that ALL conceived babies MUST be
    born.

    Thanks for your note!

Yes, I feel pretty mainstream -- or did, until I heard Quayle's
    definition.

It must be difficult for non-mothers to understand how we can both
love our own children as we do, and still believe in abortion, when
necessary. Seems like schizophrenia, or something. But I really
didn't understand the difference between just getting pregnant and
being a mother till I became one! A big difference, right?

Also, I have a stake in this for the sake of my own daughter.

My kids are all grown up. Enjoy the trip!

Motherhood just isn't getting pregnant, is it?

419.8Poor mothersAMUN::LEACHFri Jan 27 1989 17:3717
Oh boy, I wish you'd put that on paper and send it to him! You
    really said it.

It just blew me away when they took away funding for
abortions for poor women. "Have the kid, Mom -- but forget about
any help from Uncle Ron (or George). We expect you to have this
baby, leave it, get a job, live in a hovel,
and shut up. Just don't become a welfare mother, chickie. That's
a dirty word. We can't afford you. Fend for
    yourself."

Be sure to watch Notes 325 for more details on march. I've called
several NOW phone numbers, but they haven't made detailed plans
yet. I'm sure they will, however, and I'll let you know in 325.

Mr Nit Wit, as you like to call him is Vice President. If he and
George are not main stream (meaning the majority view) then how
come Dukie is still presiding over his debt?

Time in NOT on your side.

How about 'no deposit, no return' as far as pregency is concerned.

A different view from a man and also his wife.

This will liven up this note.
419.12Planned Parenthood's CampaignNECVAX::CERRETATue Feb 28 1989 16:3416
    Hi everyone,

I saw an ad in TIME last week that was placed by Planned Parenthood.
They are launching a campaign to keep abortion safe and legal in
this country. A coupon was enclosed, and it just required you to
fill in your name and address. I assume that they will forward
more information to you upon receipt of your name and address. I sent
off my note today. You can write to them at:

Hi. Following this note is a copy of a letter my friend Trudy (who
works for DEC here in NY) sent out to our favorite president. I
    thought it was worth sharing..

    See you in DC!

ps. I was involved in a clinic defense this weekend and ended up
on the 11:00 news (CBS). Motto for the week - stand near the nicest

President George Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Bush:

I have been a registered Republican for the past 25 years and
have voted Republican in every single Presidential election since
Barry Goldwater ran for President.

Even though you were not Pro-Choice, I voted for you in
the last election. However, unless you realize that the
anti-choice minority is in reality anti-life, my conscience will
not let me vote for you or any other anti-choice Republican ever
again.

I cannot fathom how anyone professing to believe in the sanctity
of life can cast a vote to force a woman who has suffered the
degradation and trauma of rape or incest to bear an unwanted
child.

Women's bodies are not just robotic baby production machines.
Our bodies are attached to living, thinking, caring, emotional
people. Can you imagine your daughter or daughters-in-law being
forced to bear a child that is the result of a rape?

I will remember your veto on election day and cast my vote for
the candidate who believes in choice and the quality of life for
the already living.

Respectfully yours,

Trudy Gewirtz
