283.0. "my daughter is depressed" by CSC32::SPARROW (MYTHing, once again) Mon Nov 07 1988 11:54

I spent the whole weekend in the hospital with my 10 year old. I
almost lost her to an appendicitis. She is home now and very
    depressed.
If the community has the time, would you be willing to send her
get well mail that I could print out for her? She is convinced noone
cares but me and her grandparents. I talk about this file all the
time and the different people and responses etc.
Her name is Patty,( I call her PJ as some of you are aware)

If you send mail, I am on WATNEY::sparrow

    Vivian-

try to cheer her up. I think that she still will have to stay in
bed, maybe you could buy her a nice book and read it with her,
ask her friends to come see her.

Every day there should be something nice she can look forward to.
And when she's better her grandparents could take her to the zoo,
or maybe there is a nice film in the cinema. Don't give her time
    to think and get depressed.

    P.S. : I'm still trying to write Patty a letter, but I can't reach
your note. !!!I won't give up!!!

You also might teach her a handcraft. I still have a needlepoint
picture that I made when I was 12 and sick. They have child kits,
and it will not only keep her busy, but creativity is good for the
    soul. At least, to me.

Rug-hooking is good for younger kids, too -- the latch hooks
are large, the steps are pretty simple, and the kits come in
lots of cute pictures and stuff. It's also pretty cheap if
    she absolutely isn't interested.

Or a knitting spool, also called knitting nancy, or a loom,
the kind you weave those loop potholders on. You'll be swimming
in potholders for the next decade, but she'll have something
to do and they make great gifts for the relatives...

283.10update on little sparrows re-featheringCSC32::SPARROWMYTHing, once againThu Nov 10 1988 11:4222
PJ and I want to thank everyone for there mail and messages. I
printed them out for her and she was so tickled! She kept saying
I don't even know these people and they care! She wants to answer
the mail too, told her that she would have to wait, my modem died.
She has kept me busy all week, and I have taught her to crochet
& needlepoint. My refriderator is covered top to bottom with pictures
and grandpa and grandma can't see theirs either.
I have bought her alot of books that she has already
read, yup Bonnie, Sweet Valley Twins and Babysitters club. The
teacher sent home her weeks work and needless to say, the kid is
not happy about that and only gets a relapes of pain when I set
out the school books and papers. :-)
She finally quit walking like Tim Conways little ole man, (remember
that from the Carol Burnett show???) She is doing really well and
will be back to school on Monday.
The love and support from this community has restored my shaky faith
in people and I want to thank each and every one of you, from my
    heart........

    thanks
