240.0. "a desperate plea for information" by ATEAM::MOSSON () Tue Oct 11 1988 14:25
Hi all,
I am new to Womannotes, my name is Kathy Mosson, and I am
an engineering tech in NIO. I am presently enrolled in the
MTTP program, Manufacturing Technologies Training Program.
During the program, we the students, have been asked to
complete two Application Projects. One of which was to
design the factory of the future. The project was changed
recently, and has turned into somewhat of a research paper
on the future trends of different organizations. The organizations
that I and two of my classmates chose were Sales, Marketing, and Field
Service. Out of the research paper, I and my partners in crime
are to pull together a 90 minute presentation that will be
given to the rest of our classmates, the MTTP staff, and various
invited guests. (yech, 90 minutes, I am having palpitations already)
Now the real reason for this note, is there anybody/anybodies
out here who works in any of these disciplines, and who wouldn't
mind sharing some of their views, on where their organization is today,
where do they feel that is heading in the future, what changes do they
feel that they would like to see implemented, what aspects they would like
to see change???
My biggest problem is time, I need to have some sort of outline pulled
together a week from this Friday, October 21st...
This is a desperate plea, if you can help me, please send mail to ATEAM::
MOSSON or call DTN 261-3397 (between 8am-10am, after 3pm)
Thanks in advance..
Kathy Mosson

I am in Engineering (formarly an engineering tech) and
thus have little to offer from your fields of interest; But
here is something from someone with perspective perhaps because
I am outside of it; which I wish I had the potential involvement
in:
DECDIRECT MUST BE REWRITTEN
It looks ugly (a word I have not used in 20 years). It
is terribly organized...i.e. what goes with what and no
back and forth refferences. You often have to know the part
number I.E. (QRVXH0000Z2-A4) or whatever to find something.
Units that cost $3,000 get tiny pictures or none at all,
while next to it an old connector is blown up so you can
see every pin.
In a way its a reflection of how we are here at DEC.
Something I wouldn't want to give up; which is the potential
for individual creativity.
But for heaven's sake, we have corporate policies on
every action engineering takes, standards in finance ect.
As far as I know the only standard for product management
and DECDIRECT is that the product desciption is limited
to 29 characters, and ultimately limited by the capacity for
scope, vision and ability to descibe it that any particular
product manager may be graced with; along with whether the system
in the chief engineer's office is up that day.
There should be standards for photo sizes, camera angles,
and one or two communicative people who are technical but
also speak English who would compose the descriptions.
If this is what our customers use to buy with.....!!
DECDIRECT? What's direct about it?
The emperor has no clothing

| Hi,
I survived my presentation, it was last Thursday, actually it wasn't
as bad as I had thought..
I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me out... I wouldn't
have had a presentation if it wasn't for the responses that I got
from this notesfile...
thanks again,
Kathy Mosson
