| In today's Manchester Union Leader, there's an article
about the recent rapes on the West side of Manch.
The following is reprinted from the MUL without permission:
" The Manchester rapist has struck three times on the West
side during the last five weeks, always on a weekend during the
early morning hours. ...In each assault or attempted assault, the
rapist peered into his victim's first-floor apartment windows,
carefully making sure the are alone and sleeping."
In light of this, a resident (Donna Lynott) has organized
a free self-defense demonstration and rape prevention
program that will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) from 7-9 pm
at the West Side Community Center. Linda Murphy (owner of
Murphy's Self Defence and Fitness Center) will be there to teach
the self defence session and Manchester police have been invited
to explain security measures that should be taken to protect
oneself. To enroll in the free sessions, call (603) 623-6066.

Hi again!
Sorry to have seemingly disappeared after offering to teach a seminar,
but I'm back...
I am able to secure a room at the Nashua YWCA that can accomodate
up to 20 persons for a class. I could have a room on a Tuesday
or a Friday evening. I need to know a) how many are willing to
participate, and b) what is the more convenient evening to schedule
this for?

| Excerpts of an article on page 36 after the funnies section of
Thursday's Boston Glob are below. The article primarily pertains to
the investigation of the stabbing death of U.Mass junior Sharon
Galligan, whose body was found Dec 19 in her car in a parking lot
outside a mall near Amherst. In a related case, a 22-year-old
Connecticut woman was found strangled also disappeared from a mall
while shopping Dec 16.

"...while investigators have identified 20 (twenty) people who
live in western Mass who police believe are capable of having
stabbed Galligan to death, they have not been able to link any of
them to the crime."
"Police offered some safety tips to women who must be out at
night."
"It's always better to go with someone," Officer Charles
Smiarowski of the Hadley Police Dept said yesterday. ...
Smiarowski said that if anyone approaches who appears
threatening, "scream, blow a whistle, make noise."
... "a woman who laces her fingers through her car keys has a
weapon she can use to punch a would-be attacker in the eyes or
throat."
"Another defense is to kick the attacker in the knees"

Excuse my cynicism, but I read that and laughed. Yes, let's buy
whistles and kick attackers in the knees.

| re: the murder of the U.Mass woman
Read in the paper that Sharon's body was not
discovered in her car in the mall parking lot for 21
hours after the murder despite:
1) her body positioned such that her foot was on
the headrest and her head off the seat under
the steering wheel
2) the time was when the malls were most
crowded with Christmas shoppers
One person was quoted as saying he thought her body was a
mannequin that was put there as a college prank.

| re .18 21-hours The local papers have stated that several
people thought the leg was a) a mannequin b) someone working
under their dashboard.
The murder was believed to take place after dark. (Sharon
was last seen around 7 PM in the mall.) The weather that
weekend was very cold, not conducive to lingering in the
parking lot.
Police have interviewed a witness under hypnotism and gotten
a composite drawing of the suspect.

PS Scary - I was in that mall the afternoon of the murder,
last minute Xmas shopping. Too damn close to home.
