234.0. "ANY NAVY WIVES OUT THERE???" by JULIET::THOMPSON_LI (Married to the Navy) Thu Oct 06 1988 19:51

Actually, I should address this to ALL military wives - I indicated
Navy because that is the branch of service we have in our part of
the country....(Moffett Field - Mountain View California)

I am a Navy wife. My husband is stationed at Moffett Field Naval
Air Station. He is a Lt. in VP-47. He is a "Tacco" on the P-3's.

I guess I just wanted to start this note for any comments...good,
bad, or indifferent....about being a military wife (or, as the case
    maybe...military husband).

My husband, Jim, is leaving for deployment at the end of December.
This is only my second deployment - I'm sure this one will be much
more difficult than the first because we are now married (the first
one, we were not...and only knew each other for about 9 months)
plus the fact that this time around he will be going to Diego Garcia
(a small British owned island - military only - in the Indian Ocean)
and there is no way for me to call him, he can only call me and
it is VERY expensive to do so. We will probably only talk once
a week (if lucky) and who knows when that will be...2am some morning,
or 1pm in the afternoon at work....who knows. Last year (he just
returned from deployment in February) he went to Misawa Japan.
This was not bad because I could call him (he had a phone in his
room) & I also went to visit him there. On the average, we saw
each other about every two months over the six he was gone. This
time however, I will see him for 10 days only (probably less because
of travel time) when he gets leave. We are thinking about meeting
in Hawaii for that time together.

I've just recently joined the Wives Club. It seems to be a good
group to get a little shot of morale while the guys are gone. I
don't know how long I will be active in it - I guess I'm really
just trying it out. I've heard alot of "horror" stories about the
wives clubs - I'm not sure whether I should believe them or not,
so I thought I should try it out myself.

How 'bout it??? Any other military wives out there that need a little
companionship & maybe a shoulder to cry on (or NAG on) about
something...any gripes, moans, complaints, ANYTHING GOOD ???

    Let's hear it.....

234.1What about Japan???JULIET::THOMPSON_LIMarried to the NavyFri Oct 07 1988 12:5213
    Also...one more item --

We are in the process of trying to decide where we should take Jim's
shore tour. Japan is one of the options we have & are considering.
The others are Hawaii & just about anywhere there is an airstation
    on the West Coast.

Does anyone have any information on *living* in Japan? We would
be either in Misawa (northern Japan) or Kadena (Okinawa - Southern
    Japan) Any info is appreciated.

    Thanks
    Lisa
234.2Japan=$$$GEMVAX::DIXONFri Oct 07 1988 16:4811
I'm sure there are others out there that have more information
than me. But the one thing I have heard about living in Japan it
is that it is *very expensive*. In fact, I think I saw a news
report showing military personnel having to send their spouses home
(to the US) due to the high living expense.

I realize that this info is rather sketchy, but you may
want to look into the economy there.

    Good Luck!

234.3I was there.....SALEM::AMARTINWE like da cars, Da cars dat go BOOM!Sat Oct 08 1988 01:029
Lisa, I was stationed in Diego GArcia For 18 months...
YOU can call there. The price for (i gather what you are refering
to) an INTERCON call has reduced drastically. When I was there
it was about 10 dollars per min. I KNOW it has reduced.
Are you familiar with AUDOVON?? MARS??

Feel free to send me mail if you want mpore about the Island.
I can pretty much tell you almost anything.

Lisa, you might want to try checking out the notesfile
TKOV60::JPNCLT. You might find out some information on what
    living in Japan is like.

I think I've heard Jim talk about Audovon -- isn't that a special
telephone line on base?? Would I really be able to use that to call
him ? I couldn't imagine them letting wives use that line for personal
calls.....I've never heard of Mars - what is it?

18 months???!!! That must have been rough. When were you there?

Thanks! I'm going to open TKOV60::JPNCLT now!

Audovon CAN be used **sparingly** They will let calls come in on

Mars is another telephone system that can be used.

I was there in 82-83. Without sounding sexist, I was there before
the women showed up. It was considered isolation duty. It has
    changed drastically sinse then though.

Autovon will probably not be available, as that is the secure
    military network simular to DTN.

Mars is not a phone system at all.. It Is the Military Amateur Radio
network and some stations can set up a phone patch, that allows
one way traffic at a time, you end what you want to say then say
"over" and the Transmitting station becomes the Receiver until
    the other end says "over"

Rather primative but cheap, you pay for the connection on your end.

AUTOVON IS FOR OFFICIAL BUSINESS, and may be used if there is
no other traffic but you can be preempted and cutoff at any time.

234.8more on mars please..JULIET::THOMPSON_LIMarried to the NavyTue Oct 11 1988 19:5715
    .7 Dave -

Any suggestions on how I could get more info on MARS ? I had a
feeling about Autovon....I knew I heard my husband mention it before
& for some reason, I figured wives wouldn't be allowed to use it
    (except maybe in emergency situations).

Thanks.....looking forward to more info on MARS.

    Lisa

P.S. I'm a little disappointed in the lack of response from the
military wives out there....I'm sure they're out there ....how about
    it ladies......lets hear from you!

234.9Here is some data, mail for more.SUCCES::ROYERFidus AmicusTue Oct 11 1988 22:3031
    Lisa,

Go to any Military base and ask at the Gate if they have a Mars
Station. If yes, then you talk to whomever is there about getting
set up with a phone patch to the Island over there. they may be
able to communicate directly with the ship, however that is not

really likely due to the frequency diffenences between the HAM radios
    and the Military gear.

So the phone contact is the most economical..What rate/rank is your
Husband? Going to Japan, Not me even if I had the Chance, unless

you are guarenteed housing on base. And without a wait. The cost
of living is extremely high there. Check the Notes file on Japan,
I do not have the data on that perhaps some one does. They could
tell you more about living costs, If you get BASE HOUSING and can
Live without fresh fruit and Veggies, they Go for It. But, I
read this summer that a watermellon in Japan sells for more than
$20.00 and forget BEEF 50.00-80.00 per Pound.

Go anywhere, that they will let farm Imports arrive in their country.

Try to get stationed in NAS anywhere, where you can ge together.
And Best of luck with your lives together. Send me Mail at SUCCES::
ROYER, OR PHONE ME AT DTN 297-7607.

    Hugs, and best wishes.

    Dave -

Ok! I'll check at Moffett re: MARS

I too have heard of the outrageous cost of living in Japan. However,
as you mentioned - we would not even consider it if we couldn't
get base housing immediately. As far as food - I find it hard to
believe that the base commissary would charge you $50/lb for beef.
Don't you pay "regular" prices at the commissary??? As far as fruit,
I know my husband had fruit when he was in Misawa (from commissary)
because he was on a very strict diet (and LOVES bananas!) When
I visited him there, however, I was not yet a "military dependant"
so I was not "properly I.D.'d" to enter the.....................
    ........C O M M I S S A R Y......and view the ever-secret
Ruskie-mellons and Confidential Capt'n Crunch :-D (On the other
hand, I could enter any exchange & purchase a major stereo system
or an entirely new wardrobe & never be questioned :-DDD )

Anyway, I just phoned Family Services at Moffett & they have several
packages I can look at describing life overseas in Japan. I plan
on making a trip there this week at lunch to look them over.

    Thanks again for your response.

My aunt and uncle just returned for miswa?, Japan anyway. they
loved it. the commisary cost are the same for anyother commisary.
thats the advantage of being military over there. With base housing
and the bx and the commisary it is quite easy to live there. if
you do shop on the economy, thats where the expenses come in.

    Lisa,

Good luck and if you go I hope you enjoy Japan, but do call
someone who is there.. someone should be able to tell you
the name of someone to contact.

If you do not have a Mars at Moffett, go to Treasure Island.
there is a Mars station there, and also the amatuer station
K6NCG. They can phone patch for you.

    Good luck.

    Dave.

Has anyone been stationed in Bermuda? Or knows of anyone that has?
I know someone stationed there for the NAVY. He's been there about
1 1/2 yrs. and is ready to leave there. He'll be out of the service
April of '90. He's hoping to get a job here in the Springs as a
computer tech. or engineer. He got his degree while he was in the
NAVY. He's supposed to be home on leave pretty soon, I CAN'T WAIT
    TO SEE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
