And now for something completely different. I'm in charge of an orienteering meet this Sunday at Wrentham State Forest (South of Boston). Orienteering is a sport where you run/walk through the woods with a map and compass trying to locate a series of defined points. There will be five courses, ranging from short and easy to long and moderately difficult. Everyone is welcome, kids too, and we'll be happy to teach you (or lend you a compass) if you've never tried it before. Also, you don't have to be particularly athletic. In fact, slow people who are good navigators will beat fast people who get lost. Directions: Take I-95 South from Boston to I-495. Go West on I-495 one exit to Rt. 1 North. 100 yards from the expressway, go Left onto Madison St. and park where you see the signs (only a few yards from Rt. 1). Registration between 10 and 1 pm. Martin.

We do orienteering in Colorado too! It's a lot of fun! Our last meet for the season is here in Colorado Springs on Oct 23/24 starting with a training session on Saturday, a Night-O (done in the dark!), and on Sunday our Club championships. Next year, our club (Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club) is hosting the US Championships, or so I'm told! People from the Olympic Training Center have been visiting our meets since Orienteering is going to be a Class C Olympic sport! Send me some mail if you want more info... Sherry | |||||

Gag! "Orienteering" (the word) sounds like something an illiterate manager would dream up. As for the practice, we used to do this at summer camp in the Boy Scouts. Lots of fun, though on one occasion, I managed to step on a log that was being used as low-income housing for a swarm of bees. *That* was *not* lots of fun. --- jerry |
