| I always want to smell good, sure, but me and several other people
I know are allergic to perfume and cologne. If I'm in an audience,
there's generally enough perfume in the air to bother me. If anyone
with serious perfume/cologne is around - I sneeze and wheeze. It's
that simple.
I used to wear perfume on occasion, because I used to be less sensitive
to it. I'm not sure what changed, but I do miss it, and I had 12
flavors of perfume, and it was really neat choosing which one to
wear and what "mood" I wanted to represent.
Sweet Honesty was simple and flowery...Ariane or Fidji was nice
during the daytime...Ciara was only used occasionally, because
it grabs 'em by the ****s and never lets go!

| There are very few perfumes I like and am not sensitive to. By
sensitive, I mean mildly allergic. I *hate* it when someone walks
by my cubicle and I can smell their perfume/cologne. If I'm near
someone wearing it for an extended period of time, I usually end
up with a splitting headache.
Unfortunately the only perfumes I like on me and am not bothered by are
*very* expensive, in the $100 an ounce range (and up). And of course my
very favorite, from a small firm in Paris, has been discontinued.
;-(
I wear perfume only rarely, never daily.
I much prefer the natural scents people have. I don't mean those
of people who don't wash enough, but those of nice clean healthy
people. People do have a natural odor and I don't really see any
reason to cover it all the time. Perfume was invented to cover the
odors which abound when people *never* bathe. I don't really think
they're necessary now.

| I also love perfume. Actually, I always buy cologne because it's
cheaper and also not as strong so I can spray it around more without
worrying about having too much on. It also has to be *spray*.
It isn't the same if it can't be sprayed on.
I'm on a budget and the kinds I like tend to be expensive (at least
to me) so I usually only have one bottle on hand at a time. When
that's gone I buy more, usually a different one to try.
My current favorite is Poisen and I wear it every day. Once in
the Mill cafeteria in the morning, an older man in line next to
me said, "Say, what's that aftershave you have on this morning?"
I said, "Poisen." and he said, "Has it killed anybody yet?" I
just said, "Not that I know of." and laughed. I thought it was
cute exchange. (But, judging how some people in this file seem
to hate cologne or be allergic to it, I guess it's a wonder it hasn't
killed anybody yet!)
One of the engineers in my group loves the smell of it and is always
saying, "Oh, I *love* your perfume." Another guy borrowed my phone
at work once and said afterwards that my phone "smelled really good".
:-)
I also like "Ruffles", "Chloe", "Opium" and "Obsession". There's
something really luxurious and decadent about perfume that I love.

I too love perfume and scented body lotions. It makes me feel
good to wear them and I've been told many times how good I smell.
Of course the ones that hate it probably don't say anything. I
hope I don't offend someone that way.
There is something sensual about scents, natural and otherwise. I
can't help being reminded of the scene in "A Fish called Wanda"
Where Otis is making love to Wanda and taking deep breaths into
her boot then sniffing his armpits. I was laughing so hard I
cried.
Lorna, if you like the expensive stuff try the great imposters.
Poisen is one if the scents they imitate. I've used some of those
and can't tell them from the real thing. liesl

I dislike it overpowering the smell of the food I'm eating. Other than that,

| I wear Tawanna (found only in the southern part of the country,
it seems; I can only find it when I go to South Carolina. If anyone
can tell me where I can get it in NH, I will be eternally grateful!),
just 1 spritz on the wrist, and 1 spritz on the neck. When I run
out of Tawanna, I like Avon's Pavi Elle.
I wear it every day, but never more than above mentioned. I hate
when women shower with the stuff, and that goes for men's cologne,
too. (My husband wears Chaz :-) )
Occasionally I do have to take a few days break, because my clothes
keep the scent, and I have to let it wear off a bit. I also take
about a week break when I go from Tawanna to Pavi Elle, and back.

I switched to channel (he bought it). In college I fell in love

I don't wear any cologne or perfume now because my husband is

The scent is the same and lasts longer than cologne and is less
costly than the perfume! Musk based scents react favorably with
my body chemistry! I really like Calvin's ads for "Obsession"!

| I don't wear perfume, because I don't like any type of strong smell,
and people who wear perfume are not always very subtle about it
(which I understand: if they like the smell, why wouldn't they surround
themselves in it?)
Lately, my eldest daughter (14+) has started wearing a perfume smelling
of vanilla, which is in fact quite pleasant. Being an adolescent,
she seems to use it quite a lot in replacement of showers, and not
in addition to them...
I use Eau de Cologne (the original Klnisch Wasser) as a placebo
on bumped heads and knees. Doesn't hurt and the smell is very light!

participated in a lunchtime test. One of the ladies in the store
also sold Avon, and we decided to test the 8 main scents with two
guys that concidered themselves experts. ("Its us guys that have
to smell this stuff!") So 4 of us each took 2 fragrances, one on
each wrist (very light), and they sniffed.
The winners were:
1) Pavi Elle (one of mine)
2) Musk
The others weren't even close! But we didn't have the heart to
tell them that most of it depends on body chemistry!
Well, it was fun.

| Wow! So this topic really was worth some discussion. Thank for all
the various replies. I was starting to wonder after I had written
it....
My personal favorites are: Obsession
Poison
(Anything at all from Estee Lauder)
Krystle
I usually have all in stock and alternate; depending on my mood
that day. Also, I like to use the soaps, and body creams that match
the scent along with the perfume...the scent seems to linger longer,
and you don't have to use that much spray (very little) after bathing
in the same scent with soap.
Avon has a book that lists all the scents they have which are similar
in smell to those more expensive scents that we all like to wear.
That is sort of an alternative for those who like the more expensive
stuff.

| I was in my "first career" in the medical field. We are told not
to wear perfume because sick people react more to odors and it could
make some patients worse.
I tend for that reason to this day never to wear any scent at work.
I use bath powder and sometimes bathoil that is scented but
save the colonge and perfume for weekends and nights. I also hate
to be overpowered by someone esle's scent.
Body chemistry does vary. I love the smell of Youth Dew but on me
its terrible.
Favorites are Chanel 19, Shalimar, Tigress, and Vanderbilt.

My favorite (actually all I wear) is White Linen by Este Lauder.
I have a probelm with people that take a "bath" in perfume or cologne
as it tends to give my nose the sensation of burning. Plus, people
that spray perfume/cologne in their office really irritate me...it
would be more considerate of them to do so in the ladies room.

in these neat shaker bottles so the stuff doesn't have to spray
all over into the atmosphere, and I believe they are 'generic'
fragrances, either men or women can wear them. Pretty nifty, eh?
In summer I use the lemon spice fragrance, and in fall and winter
I have started using sandlewood. They are pretty subtle fragrances
so only friends and lovers who get to hug and snuggle with me get
to smell the fragrance.

fragrances, not that I can afford the stuff I like best.
I have one little bottle of Anais Anais, and a purse size spray
bottle of Calyx (which my roomie bought me for Christmas). I manage
to get samples of the rest.
For cooler weather: Cocoa by Channel
Fendi
Warmer weather or anytime: Calyx
Liz Claiborn
Anais Anais
Nikki something or other (blue

Gucci No. 3

make a Lilac scent that is hard to find but smells wonderful - just
like real lilacs.
Back in the 60's I used to like the colognes that Yardly of London
used to sell. They had various kinds that smelled really good -
a rose one and one called April Violets that I think smelled just
like Paris. They were very inexpensive but all I've seen in the
stores for years is their Lavendar scent.
One inexpensive cologne I have always liked is Jungle Gardenia by
Touvache. I can remember once walking through Quincy Mkt while
I was wearing it and a woman said, "It's been a pleasure walking
behind you. You smell so nice." (It was really crowded.)
I also like the smell of pachouli (spelling?) oil. My ex-husband
used to wear it when we were first dating and whenever I get a whiff
of it, it still reminds me of being *sigh* young and in love.

I, too, used to wear perfume until I developed a severe allergy to
scents -- not just perfume but most hair sprays and other scented
cosmetics. Obsession and Calvin Klein for men are the worst. If
I'm on an elevator or in a closed space with somebody wearing
those scents, my head will plug up instantly and will take hours
to clear. The only thing that makes me sick faster is cigar
smoke.
I have found scents I can use. NATURAL flower scents, for
example. When I was in France, I picked up some natural Verbena
soap that's just wonderful. But I always liked the heavy, musky
ones better (Tabu was my fragrance . . . ) and I can't take those
at all any more.
So, while I appreciate the base noter's feeling, I have to
give my thanks to the woman at the perfume counter who is
refraining from stamping on my sinuses . . . :) :) :)

I wear perfume every day. Odyssey by Avon is what I wear because
it smells better on me than the REALLY expensive stuff. I tend
to have to control myself with the bottle because sometimes I overdo
it and tend to take baths in the stuff. I think it's a reaction
to the fact that I exercise twice a day and I'd hate for anyone
to come near me when I'm finished. They say that "ladies don't
sweat, they glow". I must not be a lady because I sweat like a
*pig*. Therefore, I sometimes douse myself too much after my shower.
Even though Odyssey is light, I think I'll be more careful now that
I know that it can really some people.
As an aside...for those of you who don't know it, Avon has a
product called "Skin so Soft" that is the world's greatest insect
repellent. It's especially effective in repelling mosquitoes.

181.46 | My friend smelled like a rose bud | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | | Tue Sep 20 1988 10:36 | 24 |
| I'm allergic to perfume, so I normally back off if someone is wearing
too much of it. Years ago I used to work with a woman who always
wore just a touch of rose-scented perfume, which was really nice
(she never overdid it): if you sat next to her in a meeting, it
was like someone had brought in one rose bud. Even though it sometimes
affected my sinuses a bit, I really liked the scent she wore.
Of course I can't wear perfume, myself.
What really bothers me is department stores in shopping malls (Filene's
is a big offender this way) where you have to walk through the perfume
department to get into the rest of the store. I tend to avoid shopping
in those places because they really do a job on my sinuses; I can't
always manage to walk through without inhaling any of the scents
people are sampling, and of course even if I manage to get INTO
the store safely, I still have to get OUT again, without suffering
through a miserable sinus attack while trying to finish the rest
of my shopping. I suppose the stores are set up that way so that
you will buy perfume on impulse as you enter the store, but I wish
they'd put something else right at the entrance - maybe lingerie,
or teddy bears, anything with no scent! (Sometimes you can exit
the store to the parking lot, walk around the building, and go back
in through a mall entrance, but usually I just don't shop there!)

been many a time we have to open all the windows in the car, and
I still sneeze all the way home. then I throw her in the shower.
I have tried to explain, over and over, don't bathe in more than
one scent at a time. the kid slays me.... :-)

| I love wearing perfume also. For the most part I wear it because
it makes me feel good but then again I love it when someone notices
a certain fragrance and comments on it.
For special evenings I love Opium and Poison.
For more casual times I like Shalimar, Chanel No. 5
and for everyday, very casual moments my favorite is Sand & Sable.
I also like Coty's Wild Musk for everyday wear.
I think perfume is very much like lingerie - it makes me feel more
feminine and very good about myself. When someone else notices
a certain fragrance its an added bonus.
For men I prefer: English Leather or Gray Flannel

| I, too, love to wear perfume. I am allergic to some
perfumes on some parts of my body so I primarily use
it on my wrists and in my hair. Has anybody ever tried
the trick of spraying the perfume in the air and then
walking (leaping, dancing) through the cloud? I find
this effective and there's so little that settles on my
skin that I avoid the rashes and itching I normally
get.
My favorites are, Elizabeth Taylor's Passion, Ombre Rose,
and Halston for very special occasions. White Linen
is great for every day. It makes me feel like I just stepped
out of the shower.
I tend to vary my perfumes a lot. Does anyone find that they
get confused reactions to this from their S.O.'s or not so
S.O.'s? I wear the perfume that fits my mood at the moment
but I wonder what the reactions are to my smelling different
all the time.

| I like perfume also. But I do have some problems with it.
If I smell someone else wearing what I like to wear and they
have too much on, I stop using that perfume. If someone is
wearing too much, it makes me cough, gag. I hate musk
I can smell it for hours and it makes me sick and I can't
breath very well. My nose also iches. It's awful.
What I like to wear, sparingly because of my reactions is
White Shoulders, Pique (I haven't been able to find it for
some time now, which is sad because it's my very favorite).

| I guess I'm a moderate. I seldom wear perfume - usually only as
part of a costume, in fact. However, I have fond memories of my
mother's perfume when she dressed up to go out for the evening.
(Amazing how a scent can recall memories... I suppose that's one
of the main attractions of perfume.)
But I also enjoy the scent of cool, fresh air, of dewy grass, of
flowers. More than once, I've come in to work on a gorgeous morning,
drinking in the air and loving every subtle fragrance, only to walk
into a cloud of "Chanel #something" or "Musk for Men" emanating from
someone walking twenty or thirty feet ahead of me.
So, to me, perfume should be exquisitely subtle, and shouldn't
be detectable from farther away than conversational distance. If
it's stronger than that, the effect it has on others may be the
opposite of what the wearer intended...

I *always* wear perfume - I feel "undressed" without it. I have
never known anyone who was allergic to it, so the consideration
for others aspect has never arisen. I also believe that a good,
subtle scent on a good, subtle man only adds to the attraction.
I do consider carefully which scent to wear i.e. work or casual.
Fave for work is Estee lauder's "Private Collection", with
muskier/spicier scents reserved for out of work (like Lauder's
"Cinnabar" or "Youth Dew', or St. Laurent's "Opium").
Not being able to afford the pure stuff ;-( I tend to buy the eau
de whatever spray and the bath oil - the oil will act as a fixative
and make it stay on a bit longer.
Do many ladies out there wear "aftershave"? I've found so many good
scents for men recently that my last few perfume purchases have
been "Aramis Original" and "Yves St. Laurent Pour Homme".

| Perfume makes me feel very feminine. I wear it every day and
each year that I go to Bermuda I pick up two new scents for the
year. Last year it was Giorgio and Chloe. This year it's
Fendi and Opium. The Fendi is wwwooooonnnnderful!!
I've had some nice comments about certain scents.

| I love perfume, but alas, I usually forget to put it on. When
I do remember, however, it's one of these:
Anne Klein (not to be confused with Anne Klein II)
KL (I bought it for the initials - Karl Lagerfeld)
Krizia (I like the clothing line as well)
Chanel #19 (I think it's a clean smell)
I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes I wear a certain
fragrance depending on what color I'm wearing. I know it sounds
strange, but some perfumes seem more blue or red or whatever to
me than others. Strange?
I like cologne on a man, but some give me a headache. My husband
wears Drakkar Noir and it smells great on him, but some of his others
I've asked him to to toss.

| Well, I'm in the minority here, but here goes anyway...
I really like to smell perfume on someone else when it's so strong the
person actually leaves a scent trail when they walk away! I don't wear
perfume that heavy myself at work, though I'd enjoy it, simply because
I don't want to offend other people. But when we get dressed up and go
out to dinner -- watch out!
Scents -- well, I wear Norrell in the summer and Halston in the
winter.

| Has anyone ever heard of the scent Ondine?? My mother has been
searching for it for years, and absolutely loves it. She still
has a 25 year old empty bottle of it that she has kept from her
honeymoon. If anyone has seen it ANYWHERE, please let me know!
I'd love to get her some if it hasn't been discontinued.
Thanks,

| This is fascinating... if only to see all these different views.
My personal feeling on perfume is: it is inappropriate to wear
perfume to work. Why? Well, my feeling is that perfume--particularly
if it is a nice scent--will (and is supposed to) attract attention to a
person's body and that this is absolutely the wrong thing to do in a work
environment.
Of course, I love wearing perfume--for the right occasions. :-)
Other interesting thing... someone said they liked the Obsession ads.
That I really found... well, (your pardon person who said this if I
offend)..but it sounded odd. You see, the ads for obsession that I've
seen, all in blue light with a naked woman surrounded by what looks to be
at least two men make me think that's what a gang rape must look like (I
realize the grimace on her face might be indicative of pleasure, but the
blue light makes it seem a bit threatening to me).

I think the Obsession Ads are designed to appeal to both
males and females. The one I find most striking is the
one that is a two pager showing both males and females
draped against stones and in the glaring sunlight.
Another ad that I get a kick out of seeing is the Charlie
ad with the subtle reverse sexism.
justme....jacqui
ps...I just had half a bottle of my Obsession disappear
through evaporation while in an atomizer on my bureau.
Anyone else experience this phenomenon with the bulb
getting sopping with the concentrated fragrence? This
is the second time this has happened to me. No more
pouring my fragrence into these new-fangled atomizers
for me!!!
