167.0. "Women allergic to their husband." by FROTHY::GONDA (Rumi |d|i|g|i|t||l|i|t|e|) Thu Sep 08 1988 19:03

Hold It! Before you folks out there press the hairtrigger of
you bazookas, this is a serious note. The main intention of
this note is to increase awareness of the problem which many
women out there may be suffering from and not know what is
    going on etc.

This was the topic of Donahue show on TV. The title really
did not do justice, but I guess they have to have catchy titles
to keep the audience. The issue really being discussed was
women who it is now shown are allergic to seminal plasma/fluid.
The women on the panel who suffered from this allergy had to
go through a lot of pain psychologically, emotionally, and
physically. Not many doctors/gynecologists know of this situation
and hence these people are usually diagnosed as having some other
problems. The way some of the couples on the panel figured
it out was by putting the two things together. That is when
they had sex the women had the allergic reactions. The one
thing to notice is that the allergic reaction is to the
seminal plasma and not the semen so a vasectomy of the male
in the couple is not necessarily a solution to the problem.
For some couples using condoms does help. However one of
the women on the panel said she would get these reactions
even by her husbands sweat and saliva too.

The show also discussed more about the allergy, ways on curing
it, and lot of other things I can't seem to remember properly
so I'd rather not put in misleading information.

Another good reason to try it out before getting married.

What kinds of reactions did the women have?
167.4FROTHY::GONDARumi |d|i|g|i|t||l|i|t|e|Sun Sep 11 1988 12:229
Well from what I still remember.

There are two major catagories of the problem one the localized
reaction one and other the more serious and non localized reaction
one. The localized reaction people usually had allergic reactions
near the vagina region only and usually were less severe. The other
group would have reactions all over the body. Now reaction here
means the usual allergy related reactions such as blisters,
asthamatic reactions, lung collapsing, fainting, etc.

From what little I've read or heard about this, it can be similar
to an irritating/itching rash, blisters, etc. OR it can be as severe
as getting the wrong blood type administered.

It may not be that the woman is allergic to the man as it may be
that the semen or seminal fluids of a particular male may be harmful
to many women. The acidic vaginal secretions may not be acidic
enough to destroy the bad actors in the seminal fluids. It really
is a tough call. Allergic is probably the best until more study
is complete. With all of the chemistry that we eat in his world
today, it's not surprising that the things are beginning to occur.

As a side: I teach chemical safety at DEC and at UMASS. The most
interesting parts of the lecture are reactions that people have
when informed of what they eat and drink. This ranges from soft
drinks to coffee to cold meats.

A very minor reaction can involve only itching and an inability
    to conceive.

A friend of mine was diagnosed with this condition several years
ago during infertility counselling. She was treated with some
kind of cortisone cream that toned down the reaction and gave
birth to a lovely daughter a few months later.
