There's a comic strip in the B. Globe that I enjoy, Arlo and Janis.
A & J are young-ish and married and usually do ok. Here's yesterday's
strip (without illustrations):
Panel 1: Arlo watching t.v.
Panel 2: Arlo to Janis: "I just saw this 'Arrid' commerical on tv..."
Panel 3: A: "Some guy says a woman who sweats isn't sexy."
Panel 4: A: "Wonder how he feels about eating and breathing".

Re sweat, a couple of weeks ago during that hot, muggy weather I
was shopping in Provincetown and happened to notice a woman shopping
next to me. She has on a jersey and she had a big circle of sweat
under each arm. Frankly, I thought it looked terrible and I felt
bad for her that her deodorant (?) had failed. First of all, I
need to find myself attractive and wouldn't find myself attractive if
I stunk of BO and had big wet circle under each arm. I think it
looks repulsive on either a man or woman to have wet spots under
their arms. Maybe when they say that a woman who sweats isn't sexy,
maybe they mean dressed and walking around and sweating which is
different from sweating in bed in hot weather. (Although, to be
honest I find that kind of yucky too!)

Well, of course beauty is in the mind of the beholder...
However, I really resent madison ave's ability to con us
into thinkin that we have to be these perfect, antiseptic,
sterile, lifeless objects before we can be attractive.
I personally don't mind the aroma of today's perspiration...
It can start to get offensive once it starts to ferment, but
that's why the goddess invented soap and water.
I've got too many other insecurities to be bothered by the damp
circles under my arms. Repulsive? Whew, Lorna, you certainly
set high standards.

Re .26, you think that's high standards? I don't really. I think
it's just average hygiene. Obviously, if somebody's been exercising
rigorously on a hot day I don't expect them to be completely dry
before they even get a chance to shower!! But, if somebody's just
browsing around stores or working in an office I don't expect to
see wet circles.

There is "fresh" sweat and "stale" sweat... "fresh" sweat is a
terrific lubricant and lots of fun to shower off afterwards :*)

I dislike body odor tremendously. I will not stay around someone
who smells. I prefer the smell of perfume. As far as someone sweating
like what Lorna saw, I agree, it isn't a pretty sight. The "few"
people in here who admit to sweating alot are aware of the situation.
I am sure they would not go to a store reaking of body odor and
with sweat stains on their clothes.
Since I have quit smoking a year ago, I find that body odor is one
smell I have absolutly no tolerance for. give me a room full of smokers
anytime.

There is a difference between a deoderant, and an anti-persperant. Deoderants
are very mild things compared to anti-persperants; anti-perserants can be very
hard on your body.
I also experience a difference between 'just being hot' sweat, and aerobic sweat
like when I'm dancing. Aerobic sweat seems to be less sticky, smelly, oily.
When it dries, it's gone. Just being hot and sweaty is very uncomfortable and I
wish I was back in MI going swimming a dozen times a day. :-)

Bonnie I am glad you moved this string.
I have skin that does not like anything including water. I also
sneeze alot around almost all perfumes. I wash daily and try to
never change soaps or laundary detergents and very carfully try
new shampoos, cologene and body powders because I like to breath.
My infliction is not even server but it is a bother, since sometimes
I can not be around someone with any thing that is perfumey on.
Mostly all that happens is that I sneeze excessively and loudly.
This is compounded by a poor sense of smell so I don't trust anything
that has any perfume in it until I have tested it in the privacy
of my house.
All this is to say that I perfer natural human smells to artificial
ones that make me sneeze at inoportune times.

157.11 | beauty is in the nose of the beholder! | WMOIS::B_REINKE | As true as water, as true as light | Sat Sep 03 1988 20:56 | 21 |
| You are welcome, Peggy,
I enjoy the natural body smells of people, their skin and
hair smells, I like to hug my husband and kids and recognize
the 'them' smell.
There are very few colognes and perfumes that I am comfortable
with for any length of time up close. (I can think of only
one person in the last year or so with whom I was frequently
together, who wore a cologne/aftershave that was noticable
to me, that I *liked* the scent and it didn't give me a headache.
:-) ).
However, even the mildly acrid smell of hard work sweat on someone
is not unpleasant to me. Tho the smell of someone who has not bathed
in a long time, or a child being ill, or intestinal gas, can roil
my stomach.
I guess for me it is finding a reasonably scented middle ground.

| I, too, am very allergic to perfumes, colognes, and fragranced products
(soaps, lotions, etc). Itching, sneezing, wheezing, are no fun.
And I *like* to smell that familiar smell when I'm close to people
I like - it's very comforting (an odorous embrace, so to speak).
People who don't practice proper hygiene are unpleasant at best
to be around....people who don't smother who they are with Chanel
#5 or Polo are fine by me - and they're hypoallergenic, too ;-)
