| I think most people would see "DEC personified" as K.O. - not too
different from your "IBM_man". Unless you picture Ada Lovelace,
there just aren't many well-known female figures in this industry.

149.2 | The face behind the Digital Logo | AKOV12::MILLIOS | I grok. Share water? | Tue Aug 30 1988 16:41 | 19 |
| My image of the "Digital" persona would be:
Male, late 30's, shoulder-length hair, earring (left ear), construction
boots, blue jeans, flannel shirt (rolled up in the summer time),
sitting at a terminal surrounded by at least 8 different wrappers
from the vending machine down the hall, in an office crammed with
thousands of dollars of equipment, all supporting incredible amounts
of books, papers, documentation, and printouts... This person
would have working hours roughly 12 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Why male? I guess because when I was in school, all the field service
guys (who were the only contact I had with Digital personnel) were
all male... I remember I was *surprised* when I started working here,
my terminal went to lunch, and the F.S. person that showed up was female...
(small voice) But I've learned that women can do those things too.
:^)

| Re .2, I'd probably agree with you except for the earring and shoulder
length hair. I haven't seen that many cool looking people around
:-).
I do picture a male engineer - sort of nerdy looking and acting,
with messy hair, jeans, wrinkled shirt - half in, half out of pants,
sneakers, and a row of pens in his pocket.

I see that picture of K.O. in the rowboat with his shirt kinda
mussed and looking like a real human being. As opposed to IBM
which I see as all stuffed shirt and everything bad about yuppies.

P.S. I used to be a JCL jock - when I first saw DCL I praised the lord
for giving me a useable command language.

Out here its either a man or a woman, in slacks and a
polo shirt, freshly scrubbed and clear eyed, in front
of a workstation.
We do not have nerds...

Well, Ada Byron (she was the Countess of Lovelace) has been dead
for quite a while, and while she personifies the typical software
engineer to me (having to deal with the hardware designers changing
things from under her, etc.), I can't quite see her as a "symbol"
of a company.
But if you want females, how about Grace Hopper? She even works
for us!
To be honest, I can'y picture Digital as any one person. To me,
it's more like a committee, all with different images, never agreeing
on anything.
Then again, the image I get of IBM is "The Godfather".....

| re .5, so if I get a polo shirt, some Visine, and a workstation,
I won't be a nerd anymore? Or do I have to move to Palo Alto?
Either way, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Except for the polo
shirt.

149.8 | This is what I think when I think Digital | WOODRO::FAHEL | Amalthea, the Silver Unicorn | Wed Aug 31 1988 10:40 | 13 |
| I picture the cover of "Fortune" (correct me if I'm wrong) with
KO in his fishing hat, and a big, kind smile.
I hate the image of a guy with long hair and an earring in any
situation! I like my guy with short hair and earring-less.
KO is DEFINITELY the image of Digital.
But for some reason, I also picture a mid 30's woman, with styled
hair pinned back, a skirt-suit with white blouse (the suit in any
color) low heels and a briefcase.

My image of Digital's persona:
The Tower of Babel, with swarms of people shouting in all
different tongues, "We have to work those issues. Who'll
take responsibilty for this action item?" :-)

| For some reason, "IBM" brings to mind *immediately* - a navy blue
pinstriped, 3-piece suit. Three dimensional, but with no face
associated. Just the suit, white shirt, tasteful tie, and black
wing tips.
"DIGITAL" brings to mind this amorphous cloud of blue jeans, chamois
shirts, 2 and 3 piece suits, and cubicle walls covered with an
incredible variety of "stuff.

re .7
Make that a case of Jolt Cola...
Also, try to go running around Stanford at lunch, or
alternately, wind surf and play hoops...
re -.1
I have a friend (a job shopper) who worked at IBM-SJ...
The uniform was the same as DEC for research and engineering,
and a nerdy white shirt/utterly tasteless polyester tie
with pocket protector seemed to be the uniform for manufacturing
mgrs/sups...
He said that they liked to have lots of meetings...

and dedicated people, but at the same time not taking things too
seriously.

| My image of the Digital persona is rather amorphous, but
almost certainly female, probably because the second or third
thing I hear whenever I tell someone I'm working here is
"I hear Digital's got a real good rep as a company for
working women."
However, if we get to vote :) I'd second Steve's suggestion
of Grace Hopper. Wow! She really impresses me!

| As a survivor of IBM in a prev life (in the field of NYC and
Poughkeepsie), the white shirt/blue tie/wingtips were not MANDATORY,
unless you wanted to ever get ahead. This was subtle but true
non-the-less . At least here at Digital, I feel like there are human
beings, and not corporate robots.
