For Adoptees, Birthmothers, Birthfathers, Adoptive Parents and all other
    interested individuals...

THE AMERICAN ADOPTION CONGRESS in conjunction with the
Massachusetts-based organization THE ADOPTION CONNECTION are sponsoring
    a one-day regional conference entitled:
EDUCATE, EVALUATE, EMANCIPATE: ADOPTION IN THE 80'S AND BEYOND

This conference will be held on Saturday, October 1, 1988 at the
Sheraton Tara Hotel in Nashua, N.H.

There will be four scheduled sessions of workshops throughout the
    day plus a buffet luncheon.

A sampling of the workshops scheduled is:

Adoptees Sense of Self: Identity Issues in Adoption

This will be a working discussion designed to better articulate
the feelings of rootlessness, the need for a genetic past, etc.,
that will better inform non-adoptees of the adoptee's experience.

                            Mothers Talk

The adoptive and birthmothers of two children adopted under a closed
system will reflect on their decisions and relationships post-reunion.

Searching In New England: The Laws of Each State

Each state will be represented in a discussion of the laws regarding
search and reunion in the five New England states.

         Birthmotherhood Empowerment: A Feminist Perspective

Ms. Swenson will discuss current public and private programs for
pregnant teens, unwed mothers, and surrendering parents from legal,
public health, and social science perspectives.

Bi-Racial and International Adoptions: Current and Future Issues

This workshop will address issues facing agencies and adoptive parents
involved in bi-racial and international placements. They will talk
about the current myths that exist and what some of the future issues
    might be.

              Clinical Practices in Adoption

Therapists experienced in working with clients who are part of the
adoptive triangle will discuss therapy issues and interventions
    unique to this experience.

Surprise! What it's Like to be Found

Panelists will discuss their personal experience of being found
as adoptee, birthparent and sibling, and the impact this had on
their own lives and the lives of their families.

Gay Adoptees: How Many Closets Can You Come Out Of?

The presenters will relate personal experiences of being gay and
coming out to parents - adoptive and birth. They will discuss the
increased complexity of issues that arise when an adoptee is gay.

Make Room for Daddy: New Found Relationships with Birthfathers

A panel of adoptees will discuss their individual experiences of
searching for their birthfathers, the reasons for this search, and
    the outcome of their contact.

There are many other workshops to choose from, but this, hopefully
will give you an idea of the scope of the planned events.

The conference begins at 8:00 a.m. for registration and the workshops
continue throughout the day until 5:00 p.m.

For a complete brochure and registration form, feel free to contact
me via VAXmail PRYDE::ERVIN or DTN 276-8470 to request detailed

This public service announcement has been brought to you by an adoptee
who is an adoption rights activist.

148.1P.S. to Base Note #148PRYDE::ERVINTue Aug 30 1988 12:1913
BTW, since I don't know how to do fancy things like copy this base
note into other notes files that have to do with 'parenting' (I
am assuming that a note file pertaining to parenting exists), or
to Mennotes (I'm sure there are some birthfathers out there who
might be interested in this conference), please feel free to extract
this note and post it in other applicable notes files. I just don't
have it in me to repeatedly type in this base note into all applicable
    notes files.

Your help in getting the word out is appreciated.

When you want to enter a note in several files, the simplest
way is to type the text into a file. Then, from in the notes
    file, type:

NOTES> WRITE filename.type (to start a new note)
NOTES> REPLY filename.type (to reply to an existing note)

If you want to cross-post an existing note, type:

    NOTES> EXTRACT filename.type Note-number

This creates a file of the desired name in your default directory.
You can then write this file to the other notes files as if you
    had typed it in yourself. (There are lots of options on Extract;
you can type HELP EXTRACT to learn about some of them.)
