132.0. "A womannoters party in Nashua in October" by CSSE32::PHILPOTT (The Colonel) Mon Aug 22 1988 13:56

       Announcing another _WN_ party.

There will be a get together and general nosh-up at the "Giant
of Siam" restaurant in Nashua NH on Firday, October 21
       commencing at 7pm.

The style will be an improved version of the EATS conference
party held recently (we all learned from that experience): ie it
will be a buffet consisting of three courses (Soup, appetizers
and main course), and probably cost $15 per head for meal, tax
and gratuity (drinks extra). If we don't get the 24 people we
need for this deal the party will either be a la carte or
       cancelled...

Please reply here if interested, so that I can start the
negotiations with the restaurant (I have a fair amount of time
away from my desk in the next month, so if I appear to have gone
       quiet please bear with me...)

Once I have some idea of the responce I will post a menu and
       more detailed information.

       /. Ian .\

PS: The restaurant is Thai, and food is a mixture of spicy and
non-spicy. We have a choice of how to go vis-a-vis the buffet:
all spicy, all non-spicy or a mix. At least one dish will be
vegetarian, at least one sea food and at least one chicken so we
can handle the usual degrees of aversion to red meat... Last
time the restaurant sufered a crisis of confidence on the very
hot dishes and toned things down a bit. ... ...

Good idea.

How about at least 1/4 of the dishes "properly prepared" (as they would
be for native Thai), whether or not this means "spicy".

re .4:

       hot food.

This is always a problem: the Thais are convinced that Americans are wimps
when it comes to hot food, and almost always tone down the food in
restaurants. I had eaten there (Giant of Siam) several times (at lunch)
before I took my wife for dinner. Once they knew she was Thai they threw away
the menu for my food and cook it as they cook for themselves (I usually ask
for whatever they are preparing for themselves for lunch). It is always hot.
At the last party (EATS.NOTE) they made the hot dishes (and the not-hot ones)
more or less as they would for home consumption in Thailand. This is not as
hot as you'd get it from a market stall in the floating market in Krungtep
(=Bangkok) but it is hotter than their normal fare. The only problem was that
they "forgot" to provide the hot sauces and other condiments needed (in
fairness the staff were rushed off their feet by the DECmob). I'm trying to
get that fixed this time round...

       but no red meat

Easy done: beef is the least used meat in Thai cuisine (it's too expensive
there: the most common is pork, though chicken runs it a close second.)

(OR $#%$!! green peas, which seem to be every chef's idea of
"something for a bit of color" but to which I am *allergic*)

Genuine Thai food *never* uses green peas (which don't grow at all well in
their climate), though a few Thai-style chines dishes use pea pods - at least
they are easier to remove from the food :-). The Giant of Siam appear to use
green bell peppers as the "something for color" ingredient...

I just re-read this. Do you mean that you don't consider pork to be
"red meat", Ian? I ask because most people (including me!!) do regard
it that way. To me, "red meat" is a shorthand for "meat from a mammal

I spoke to Ian's manager this morning. He told me that Ian is trying to
arrange moving back to England but has not yet done so. I asked him to
pass on a message from me inquiring about the status of the party, at
the request of Bonnie Reinke, so if I hear from him I'll let Bonnie know.

Unfortunately, Ian does not have a phone listed in his name and his manager
was understandably reluctant to divulge the number.

It looks like we have 21 people interested in going to
Giant of Siam this friday. Of those, there are 10 dragons.
One dragon doesn't want red meat, one doesn't want fish, and
one no peas. I propose a buffet with about 1/4 very hot,
1/4 medium, and 1/2 mild; with a pretty even mix of meat, fish
and veggie in each category. This should make everyone happy.

I will visit the restaurant tomorrow to make arrangements. I'll
ask that beer & wine be pay as you order to avoid confusion.

I'll post directions tomorrow too. They're on East Hollis St.,
