| I don't know if this will help - it is quite a drive, but often
times in emergency situations the Feminist Health Center in Portsmouth,
NH will take you in. I haven't been there in quite a few years,
but I remember them being pretty quick in their response.
For others interested, I use to go there when
I was at UNH. The people there are wonderful and caring. All of
the Doctors and professionals I dealt with there are women; all
of whom are easy to talk to and make those yearly checkups more
bearable!

128.2 | Do you like male gyn doctor? | RAINBO::RU | | Fri Aug 26 1988 09:10 | 10 |

My wife hasn't seen a gyn doctor for three years because she
doesn't feel comfortable to see a male doctor.
I wonder is there any female doctor around Lowell, Chelmsford
area? If there is one, are there long waiting list?
How do you feel about this? Do you prefer a female or male
gyn doctor?

Hi -
As I was at the age where I figured I should go to my first
gynecological exam, I was frantic running around trying to find
a women gynecologist. Luckily, I found one. She is located in
Westford at the Westford Women's Health Center. Although I
go to her for my gynecological exams, she cannot/does not have the
ability to perform any REAL examinations: you know ones that require
the technical equipment.

128.4 | Is a drive to Boston too far? | PRYDE::ERVIN | | Fri Aug 26 1988 13:34 | 7 |
| I don't know about the Lowell area, but if it's worth a little drive
to have an excellent woman gynecologist, I would very strongly
recommend Dr. Johanna Perlmutter who is affiliated with the Beth
Israel Hospital in Brookline, MA. She is an ob/gyn and it takes
about 1 month to get an appointment with her for a routine gyn exam,
less time if there is a specific problem happening.

I don't understand what you mean about this woman doctor at the
Westford Women's Health Center who cannot/does not perform a real
exam with technical equipment. I've never thought of a gyn exam
as really technical. Please explain???

| can't recommend, but....
The very first time a saw a gyn, I chose a woman, thinking
I would feel more comfortable. When the exam was over, I
felt *really weird*, VERY uncomfortable. Back then, I was
SUPER, SUPER modest. I changed to a male doctor and have
had none of thoseuncomfortable feelings. He was very
professional and explained the "technical stuff" very
well (although his Indian accent was a distraction). At least
in my case, I felt more at ease with a male rather than a female.

I prefer female gyns. I currently have a first appointment with a
doctor in Tewkesbury. (She also has an office in Lowell.) I made the
appointment several weeks ago, and she can't see me until October.
Since I haven't seen her yet, I can't really say if I like her or
not, but she was recommended by someone whose judgement I trust.
Send me mail if you'd like more information.

128.8 | Dr. Mary Briggs in Burlington | HPSCAD::ANASTASIA | Roll with it, baby. | Fri Aug 26 1988 14:07 | 8 |
| Dr. Mary Briggs at Lahey Clinic (273-8564). Lahey is right at the
junciton of Rt 128 and Rt 3 in Burlington. It usually takes me a few
weeks to get an appointment. Only a few days if there is a problem.
I prefer a female gyn. I figure she has a vested interest in knowing
her stuff.

| Drs. Alan & Rebecca Green Professional Assoc is a great preactice!
As well the the two doctors, there are several nurse/midwives or
nurse/practitioners. Routine scheduled maintenance and minor problems
are handled by the n/m n/p professionals [all women last time I
looked] unless one demands to see one of the doctors.
Alan & Becky do most or all deliveries and all surgery. Alan is
my actual 'doctor' because when I needed to see an MD Becky had just
discovered that her expected child was in fact going to be twins
[i.e. she wasn't taking on new patients until after she returned to work]
Everyone I've dealt with in the practice has been superb and I
recommend them highly.
As to my preference: My first gyn doctors were all men, the Air
Force didn't have too many women doctors, and they were for the
most part sympathetic, caring people. When I began seeing
nurse/midwives instead, I found their questions more enlightened
and less clinical. I have never seen a woman MD in this capacity
so I do not have a basis for direct comparison. I do know that
when I see Alan Green, I don't feel funny or dumb and that he listens
when a talk and answers when I have questions. From some of Becky's
patients, I gather she is the same.
My preference is for the kind of tiered environment I find in this
kind of practice.

Re: .7
You said that you are going to a femal gyn in Tewksbury. Seeing
I live in Tewksbury, I would definitely like to know what her name
is. It would make going a lot easier seeing it probably won't be
far from my house.

In the Boston-Cambridge area, I go to Cambridge Women's Health Care
Associates on Concord Ave. in Cambridge near Harvard Sq. The people
I see I think are only practitioners, not doctors, although they
can (and have) prescribe drugs. I've gone to them for a number of
reasons and found them to be very competent, professional and
respectful of the fact that I was kind of uptight (literally) about
the PAP smear part of it.
They are all women, by the way.
