| 122.2 | Lots in Cambridge | TALLIS::BYRNE |  | Wed Aug 17 1988 11:10 | 17 |

    My SO and I just bought a futon + folding sofa-frame for his summer
    place. We looked in Cambridge, Mass, where there are at least 4 futon
    places within a few blocks of each other.

    If I recall, they were New Moon Futons, on Mass Ave, across from
    the Crate&Barrel Furniture store, very expensive but nice; Futonair,
    also on Mass ave, near Central square, nice futons, but their frames
    were stapled together; Sleep-o-rama, Mass ave, bargain basement
    quality and prices; and where we eventually bought, Bedworks, on
    Western ave just off Mass ave. Bedworks seemed to have the best
    price/quality ratio.

    The nice thing is that all these places are close to each other, so
    its easy to compare what is available for different prices.

    A silly question from UK - What's a Futon?!!!!!!

| 122.4 | it's like a soft mattress, or pillow | CADSYS::RICHARDSON |  | Wed Aug 17 1988 11:59 | 8 |
| | It is a soft mattress (or mattress-shaped pillow). In Japan, they
    are used for beds. I think they are normally rolled up when not
    in use. In the US, people get frames for them so that they can
    be folded up into a chair-like shape and used as a piece of furniture
    when no one is sleeping. I've never slept on one,but I imagine
    that they are good for people who like or need a hard mattress,
    so they are probably reasonably comfortable (I have a platform bed,
    so it is pretty hard).

| | Try the Mattress Company in Chelmsford. The sales staff bent over
backwards to help me when a frame I bought was defective. (They
did replace it.)
I believe they also have a store in Cambridge.

| 122.7 | Milford, NH store | DOODAH::RANDALL | Bonnie Randall Schutzman | Wed Aug 17 1988 14:53 | 5 |
| | There's a furniture store on 101A in Milford, NH, that sells
    futons. I've forgotten the name, but it's a couple of blocks
    from Elisha's restaurant, on the same side of the road.

| | Or, Furniture-To-Go in Framingham, rte 9 to the east of 495 (in the
    Shopper's World plaza). We bought two there (plus frames). Can't
    remember prices, but if you really want to know, I can look up the
    receipts at home.

    They also have a store on rte 9 to the west of 495.

| | The Sleep Shop, on Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua, has them.
    They also have a store in Cambridge. A little advice -- be sure
    to get the best quality mattress; the cheaper ones break down after
    awhile.

    I was there the other day -- they have at least three sizes, different
    color and quality pads, etc.

| | I just bought a new mattress for my platform bed at this store,
    and it's wonderful! It's a small, family-owned store, the manager
    (Richard) gives you personal attention, and he's very knowledgeable.
    He'll tell you which kind of foam is best for any medical condition
    you may have, and then he'll lay a mattress out for you to try!

| 122.11 | Macro Polo | QUARK::LIONEL | In Search of the Lost Code | Sun Aug 21 1988 21:41 | 6 |
| | There's also Macro Polo (love that name!) in Portsmouth, NH - on
    Bow St., I believe, just around the corner from "The Blue Strawbery".
    Macro Polo is a fun place to browse, even if you're not in the market
    for a futon.

    Fountain Head apartments.

| | The Mattress Factory on 101A in Nashua (opposite of where the
    old Keeley Farms used to be) has a great selection of futons
    in all sizes and materials. You can get all cotton or partial
    cotton depending on the firmness you want.

    *They also have two really great friendly cats that run around
    the store and help you try out the futons!!

    Good luck!

| 122.14 | merci beaucoup | LEZAH::BOBBITT | invictus maneo | Wed Aug 31 1988 10:24 | 18 |
| | thank you all for your help. I bought a 6" thick cotton/foam queen
    size futon sans frame at New Moon in Cambridge. I would have bought
    at the store where 7th Heaven Futons was (they had a lovely 8"
    cotton/foam) but they didn't have them in stock and I HAD to get
    it that day because I HAD to get rid of what was left of the loft
    I slept in and get SOMETHING to sleep on that night. Covers were
    around 40$, so I decided to buy several fitted sheets - put one
    over the top, one over the bottom (they overlap) until I sew up
    a cover myself. It is VERY comfortable. Also, New Moon had an
    ad in the window about 10% discounts for students (I just happened
    to have a student friend with me who would have obliged, and I wouldn't
    have felt *too* guilty about it) - but that was just on frames
    (which can be VERY expensive also!).

    Thanks for all your help!

    -Jody
