89.0. "Wedding Dresses" by RATTLE::MONAHAN () Sat Dec 31 1988 17:42

    Hello,

Does anybody know of a seamstress who does very good work, has been
sewing for many years, has reasonable prices, and can do a wedding
    dress?

Also, has anyone looked into this before? Do you know if it's cheaper
to make one or to buy one? Know of any dress places that have good
dresses at reasonable prices, or are they all around the same.
I live in No. NH but am willing to travel around an hour to go to
    a shop.

I really want a beautiful wedding gown but am a little worried about
spending so much money on a dress that will only be worn for around
    8 hours.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Denise

    P.S.

I sent mail to Beth (the seamstress in an earlier note) but I didn't
get a chance to read her note so I thought I'd enter one of my own.

Well, I suspect the best we can do is point you to the same
conference we pointed Beth to: ERIS::THREADS. Press the Select
key, or KP7 (for "the 7 key on the KeyPad on the right") to
    add to your notebook.

I'd say that the average "low" price for a wedding gown is about
$450.00. I've looked around the Marlboro/Worcester area and really
    haven't found anything I liked under $600.00.

I wish you much luck---I went through the same thing.

... I finally found what I liked and paid a lot of money for
it.... but the eight hours that I will be wearing it are worth every
    cent that went into it.

    Re wedding dress bargains:

There are often ads in DTW (probably other regional/cluster DEC
newsletters as well) for wedding dresses, worn once (or sometimes
they say 'never worn'). This might be worth checking out, as well
as the ::CLASSIFIED notesfile (anyone know what node that is on
now?), and the Want Advertiser or local newspapers.

I don't think we spent $500 on our whole wedding, including the
    reception . . .

If you're in the Boston area -- Filene's basement usually has a
wedding gown sale around September -- usually advertised in the
    newspapers.

Try Arthur's off of the old Route 62 in Hudson, MA for a
real good bargain on wedding gowns. Might have to have
it cleanned but might be worth the price. From friends
who have bought there, I have heard great things about
    	what they could get.

    Gheri,

The date is set for 5/20/89.

I'm going to try looking at some of the places mentioned in thiis
conference and also consult with a seamstress who was recommended
    to me.

If I still can't find what I want I'll let you know.

Thanks very much for your reply,

    Denise

We've been having a *lot* of problems with the cluster...funny dates
is just one of them. (Dunno, Suzanne, what are they? These are
    8800s)

    	RE: .12

(This is great! I get to talk about something non-controversial
    	for a change!!)

Maggie, your 8800's (Nautilus cpu's) are probably running Version
7.0 or 7.1 of the console software (on the Pro 38N that 8800's
    	use for a front end.)

If so, ask your system managers to set time on the PRO before
booting VMS (using a SET TIME command on the console using PRO DCL.)

When VMS comes up, they will have to set the time again (using
a SET TIME=value command.) The console release notes say that
all you have to do is to type SET TIME <cr>, but they lied.
You have to put the actual time in for each node of the cluster.

When you get Version 8.0 of the console software, you won't
    	have this problem anymore (hopefully.)

By the way, the chief symptom of the time bug (under versions
7.0 and 7.1) is for time under VMS to come out about 3 -4 months
ahead (which tracks perfectly with the fact that the date for
this note is in late December.)

We hardware techies come in handy sometimes, yes? :) :) :)
89.14Must've been the octal-to-hex conversion ...NEXUS::CONLONTue Aug 09 1988 13:228

P.S. Slight miscalculation on the number of months from
now til the end of December.

Definitely helps if you load the Time Of Day Register in
your head with the correct month before you start counting...

    	(Oh well.) :)
89.15Modern Bride and Formal ShopNSG022::POIRIERSuzanneTue Aug 09 1988 14:0917
Try the Modern Bride and Formal shop on Elm Street in Manchester.
I did not buy my dress there but I did purchase the bridesmaids
dresses there. They also had an in house seamstress that made sashes
for the bridesmaids gowns and made the flower girls gowns to match
(they were much cheaper this way compared to ordering). I don't
know if that seamstress designs bridal gowns but you might want
    to ask.

She also seemed to have a large selection of last years samples.
Again they may need to be cleaned but some of them were gourgeous.

    Phone number 625-5995.

Best of luck with your wedding. The money I spent on my dress was
well worth it, even if it was only for 10 hours.

    Denise,

I made (with the help of my best friend) my wedding gown. By
the time I got all the materials, trimmings, ect. I spent somewhere
between $85-$90. It was a lot of work, but well worth it.

Whatever you decide to do, congratulations and best wishes to
    you and your fiance (sp?)

Try the J.C. Penny bridal catalog. Good stuff, cheap. Take it to someone
for modifications if you want.
89.18Hooray for Filene's BasementPRYDE::ERVINWed Aug 24 1988 13:452
I'd second Filene's basement in downtown Boston. They have designer
wedding dresses for $50, $100, just need plenty of patience.
