78.0. "pen pals to meet!" by IPG::HUNT (pass the Windolene please) Wed Jul 27 1988 08:32

I don't know if this subject has been raised before, if so
please Mrs. Mod. move it to wherever it should be.

I wondered how many people have made friends through this notesfile
and have met. I made good friends with someone from Boston about
a year ago, and am so happy because at long last she is coming over
to England to stay with me. I am really looking forward to showing
her something of this country and am planning things to do so she
can get some memories to take back. I am so thankful to Womannotes
for 'arranging' for us to meet, because we would never have done
    so in any other way.

Has anyone else made a holiday journey to meet a Noter?

    Diana.

78.1I've met lots of them!BLITZN::LITASISherry LitasiWed Jul 27 1988 12:1513
Last year my soon-to-be-ex-husband and I went to London for the
Denver Bronco game (he won a trip!) and we stayed with a wonderful
couple that I met thru notes. (Emma Christophers in the London
office). And last May when I went to Boston for a class, I met
several nice noters, including the infamous moderator, Steve Lionel!
If I hadn't gotten sick while I was there, I would have met more.

Locally, I have met lots of noters, esp. during our last BBQ. It's
lots of fun to meet the face behind the words!

This August I shall have the privilege of meeting someone I met
through notes when she comes to Salt Lake to teach a class for our
office. Since this will be her first trip "out West", I'm planning
all kinds of places she may want to visit while she's here. It
will be the first "noter" I've met, so I'm really excited!

I'm "infamous"? (1: Having an exceedingly bad reputation. 2:
Loathsome, grossly shocking.) Sherry, I didn't think I was THAT
bad! And I even cooked you a nice dinner! Hmph! :-)

I've met a lot of nice people through NOTES. In fact, I'd say that
most of my friends I first met by NOTES. It is fun to finally
meet a noting-friend in person, especially if they live far away.

At DECWorld last year I was talking with several customers about
NOTES and how they are used within the company at lunch. We were
at a large table with several other DECcies that I didn't know.
We got to talking about the conferences that we frequented, and
found out that one of the other people had a similar notebook.
He didn't recognize my name, and when I told him that it's probably
because I signed my notes ASP, he immeadiately knew who I was.
He was suprised that I wasn't older and complimented me on my noting.
Unfortunately he was mainly a read only noter, so I didn't know
much about him. We both agreed that WOMANNOTES was one of our
favorites. It still is one of my favorites.

No, you don't need to wear a bag over your head. It will be a
    pleasure to see you again.

Wherever I have travelled on business for DEC (mostly Atlanta,
Washington DC, England, Ireland) I have always set up plans with
noters ahead of time. The people in the folk_music file are often
exchanging information about when to plan trips to get to certain
    festivals!

When I was in England last year, I spent a day going around London with
my friend who is a member of a team of Morris dancers. They would
dance at the Tower, and then go to a pub, and then dance near London
Bridge, and then go to a pub, ...and so forth. When we got to St.
Paul's cathedral, they put me in the middle and danced around me in
front of all the tour buses! Now, how could anything like that have
    ever happened without notes?

I stayed with noters in England who took me to Stonehenge, and I
stayed with a noter and her husband in Ireland. I drove across
Ireland by myself (to Galway) and stayed with the parents of a noter
whom I had never even met, but who wrote to me to recommend his
    folks' bed and breakfast place.

When I'm at an educational site, I always find other noters to have
    lunch with.

I've also met many noters in person that I first got to know
through notes. I've been around just long enough to remember
the first "official" noters party, put on for the express
purpose of getting noters together to meet each other in person.

I don't recall too many instances of trips being made *specifically*
for the purpose of meeting other noters, but it does happen. One
person came from Colorado to visit me for my birthday last fall,
for instance. And for one of the early noters parties, we got up
a collection to fly a popular noter from South Carolina to attend.

    Ah, those were the days.

78.8Noters make great Friends!SHIRE::BIZEThu Jul 28 1988 04:0317
When you're over in Europe, and, even worse, in Switzerland ...
well it's not that easy to get friendly with other noters, but ...
    it's possible!

I presently have one regular and one fairly infrequent pen pal whom
I started talking to in another Notesfiles. They are both in the
US, and one of them is planning to come over next summer with his
family, if he can make it! I find that idea ***really exciting***

By the way, if anybody is coming over for DECworld, I'd be overjoyed
to meet them if they pass through Geneva, just drop me a mail!

It is true that we European Noters feel a bit left out sometimes,
especially when there's a Party in the making...

Don't feel too alone when noting parties are planned and commented
on. I'm in Salt Lake City, Utah, and I always feel sad that I can't
attend. I'm sure that other non-locals feel the same way too.

I want to publicly thank a dear net friend who over the past year has
shared in building a friendship that one would seem impossible being as
we live an ocean apart. My friend has given me the encouragement and
shared in my enthusiasm to fulfill a dream I've always had; that dream
was to travel to England. She has graciously invited me to come to her
home and meet her family and I am busting with excitement to finally get
to meet Diana in person.

I met Diana through Womannotes. I responded to a topic she had addressed
about a year ago. The topic, at the time, was extremely personal to me.
I had gone through much the same as she was about to go through; I wrote
her off-line and our friendship grew. My only goal at the time was to
gently walk beside her and support her as much as one could possibily do
over the Net. But, she gave back...:-) She's helped me to learn more
about myself and grow even more as a person.

Thank you Womannotes! And, thank you Diana, for being my friend.

Well, I haven't made friends with anybody from far away because
of this notesfile, but I did meet the guy I live with now because
of notes. And not the singles file either! He just sent me mail
out of the blue one day last year to say that he liked reading my
notes and would like to meet me. He's mostly a read only noter
so I didn't recognize his name either. Since he only lived 50 miles
away it was easy to meet, and I was very surprised when we actually
liked each other and started dating!

(Gee, for all I know he could have sent that same mail to about
200 female noters and I was the only one who fell for it!!!)

Yeah, my grandmother can't believe it either. She keeps insisting
that I must have a maid. But if I were her granddaughter rather
than her grandson I doubt she'd give it a second thought.... :-)

As the writer of the base note I am very touched at Charlene's mail.
It is of course Charlene who is coming to visit me!

At the time we met, I was going through a difficult time and she
helped me so much. She gave me enormous support and understanding
and such humour sparkled through every line!

I am really excited that she is coming over to England and that
we can meet at last. And she is bringing some oreo cookies too!
    (Whatever they are!)

Well Charlene has been and gone! We had a wonderful time and she
was exactly like I thought she would be. We rushed all over the
place, to London, to Stonehenge and Salisbury, to Oxford to see
James Last, to Windsor, and just around the local villages.

I only hope all those photographs come out OK!

The things she liked best seemed to be the Earl Grey tea and the
    cheese toasties.

She brought me a waffle maker which I could not buy in England and
lots of maple syrup to put on said waffles. Also presents for all
    the family.

I can certainly recommend pen-pals found via Womannotes.

I'll second that, Di. I had the opportunity to have Penny Smith
(PARITY::SMITH) come to Salt Lake and present the "Becoming An Everyday
Genius" class for our office, and we had a wonderful time! Even
in meeting for the first time was like being with an old friend
because we had "talked" so often over the net. It's a good feeling!

78.18And weren't the oreo's the best??? :-)KRYPTN::GERTZStonehenged In EnglandMon Oct 10 1988 14:4023
We had a super time! My first trip abroad (anywhere really) by myself
and this lovely Lady Di was waiting at Heathrow with a big sign in her
hands welcoming me to England!

The cheese toasties and Earl Grey tea were terrific, but the best part
was meeting and spending time with Diana. She was the same in person
as I sensed she was as we wrote and shared so much of ourselves/lives/
feelings thru Womannotes.

Diana opened her home and her friendship to me and I'll always remember
the time we spent together laughing, rushing around, sitting/chatting in
her lovely garden, and me ecstatic atop Stonehenge, Diana looking at me
wondering why I could be so excited over a few upright stones..:-))

We said goodbye at the airport and I cried cause I knew I'd miss my
friend. I'm hoping she pack her bags quite soon and jets over here so
I may return the gracious hospitality that was extended me.

Again, thank you Womannotes for without this means of communication,
we would never have met.

Charlene
