58.0. "FGD: NOW member feedback" by ULTRA::ZURKO (UI:Where the rubber meets the road) Tue Jul 19 1988 09:05

I know some of the guys here are NOW members (and possibly some of the women
who studiously avoid FWO discussions).

I'm looking for some feedback from members of NOW. Do you try to separate
the wheat from the chaff, or just give, 'cause you know that you agree with
them in general? What do you enjoy about NOW, and what do you wish they
change? If anyone actually goes to meetings, what's it like? Are there
alternatives?

I'm not sure how much the local chapter (i'm a member of the Acton chapter,
too) is doing. For one thing, the last newsletter noted that they're in
desperate need of people to do things.

I support the organization because it's there. While they may or may not
always do what I would do, it's important that there be a group speaking up
on these issues.

If there are enough people in the area who want to change things (provide
more facts, attack certain questions, etc) it should be easy to make a
change because of the lack of activity. Kind of a takeover...

I belong to a national organization called FAIR. They occasionally go overboard
with the rhetoric as badly as NOW, but I depend on being able to seperate the
fact from the rhetoric, and am glad that I can get the facts, even with the
rhetoric.

When I pay my annual NOW dues, I pay the membership fee and add
another 50 or 100. And for the rest of the year, I ignore the
requests for more funds. good causes, but I'm a miser.

I support NOW because the org does lots of work I approve of but will
not do myself. I regard NOW as my personal PAC (political action
committee).
