57.0. "FWO: NOW member feedback" by ULTRA::ZURKO (UI:Where the rubber meets the road) Tue Jul 19 1988 09:04

I've gotten my latest piece of mail from NOW. I'm a relatively recent member
(inspired by womannotes v1). I'm having real problems getting past the
rhetoric. Even when the cause is near and dear to my heart. Nerdly little
engineer that I am, I want [something that sounds like] facts (Facts are
simple and facts are straight...).

So, I'm looking for some feedback from members of NOW. Do you try to separate
the wheat from the chaff, or just give, 'cause you know that you agree with
them in general? What do you enjoy about NOW, and what do you wish they
change? If anyone actually goes to meetings, what's it like? Are there
alternatives?

I am a card carring NOW member but almost never participate in any
of their activities - meetings, conventions, etc. I too have trouble
with the absents of facts - but there was a sheet they sent out
about the presidential canidates earlier this year that was really
good. I view it as a way to keep in touch with what other women
are doing politically. I did catch a telecast of Shirley Chishom
when she spoke to the NOW comvention last month.

In the "Cakes" group Pat and I were leading in Westford this spring
there were about 6 women who are active members of the Acton NOW
chapter. From what I understand from them is that the local chapter
works on/supports issues that they feel are important and that the
next level listens to them and adds issues and so on. I think that
they use "grassroots" control for setting the agenda, which means
if I were so inclined I could push an issue I cared about (I would
also have to be willing to put in the time).
