I went to the local Radio Shack on the weekend to buy a new telephone
and some sundry connectors and bits of wire. Well, I got those,
and I also came back with a purple plastic slinky, a package of
plastic dinosaurs and little cavemen, and a little bibbed overall
outfit for my stuffed bunny rabbit, whose name is Nubby. He came
with pajamas originally, but I buy him new clothes every year for
Christmas and other holidays (And one year I made him the BIGGEST
stuffed carrot in the world ;-) He sleeps with me and goes with
me when I have to stay in hotels. (Gawd, this is *really* a true

| | i bought a melissa manchester record a few years ago because it had a song
that i liked from college days. it's a really horrible song, but it's one of
those that you can learn the words from in about 20 seconds, and then you
can sing it straight through as soon as you hear the first note.
the really horrible part is that that song reminded me of my roommate at the
time (the one who came back from spring break with hoof-and-mouth disease
[not kidding!]). Anyway, when i bought it, i made sure to get lots of other
records so that i could hide the MM one in the middle without anyone seeing
it. and i'm the one who always says that people should do what they want
without worrying about what other people think...

Interesting that your car names are male and mine are female.

I sleep with a stuffed Santa Bear named Gandalf, a regular bear

was a penguin but which my friends informed me, my sophomore
year in college, was really a panda bear, named Jenifer.

I love Disney especially all of the animated movies and very
    	especially Winnie-the-Pooh.

For my graduation from college this May, one of my best friends

Right now, a whole bunch of non-New England readers are
probably scratching their heads saying, "What is a frappe???" :-)

As far as I know, it is something similar to a milkshake,
right? (Only it has some other ingredient that differentiates
it from a shake, I think.) Like malt, maybe?

New Englanders? What am a frappe?

| | A frappe is a cabinet.

What? You're not from Rhode Island, and you don't know what a
    cabinet is?

It's a milkshake; i.e., ice cream and milk and flavorings churned
    into a slurry.

In New England a milkshake is milk mixed (firmly) with flavoring,
but without ice cream. (This is not as true as it used to be.)

Just adding malt doesn't make it a frappe, cuz I've

    GOD, I'm starting to DROOL!!!!!

to-be (no it's not a typo, we patched it up afterwards), and left
for a 3-week vacation in Palma de Mallorca to recover from the shock.
I met a nice chap over there, and we had a lot of fun, but when
it came to having sex, I just wasn't ready to pick up the threads
and made it very clear to him - repeatedly. I even had to repel
    him pretty forcefully one evening.

Well, a week after I got back home, I received this loooong letter
from him, saying he hoped he had not impregnated me, but if he had
he would willingly fly over and marry me, and if I didn't want to
marry he would recognize the child and help financially!!!! I wrote
back straight off telling him how kind he was, but as we hadn't
had intercourse I just could not possibly carry his child, and that
he should stop worrying. Believe it or not, he wrote again several
times "why do you pretend nothing has happened between us, my darling
love?" and also "are you trying to keep my child from me, who love
you and care for you?" and a few more pearls in this vein. I humoured
him for a while, but finally got fed up and wrote him a pretty curt
letter. He only wrote once more, including a photograph of a curvaceous
blonde, who was to be the mother of his children "but he would always
keep me and our child in a special corner of his bleeding heart"...

When I got his first letter, I was just howling with laughter, and
showed the letter to my mother... and it took me an hour to convince
her that no-no-no I had not slept with the guy, nor had I done anything
more that could even remotely be interpreted as a sex act (don't
ask me what else exist - I had thought a sex act VERY DIFFERENT
from anything else, but since then I have always doubted...). He
must have been between 20-25 years old and if he still thought you can
makea woman pregnant with wet kisses....

    I always remember Mallorca fondly...

Re .203, I have thought for a long time that the worst song of my
lifetime, so far, has been "The Ballad of the Green Berets" by Sgt.
Barry Sadler (sung in his shakey, sincere, yet misguided voice).
This is followed closely by "Billy & Sue" (a horrible song about
a guy who dies in Vietnam because he stands up and gets hit when
he reads in a letter that his girlfriend is cheating on him-like,
I'm sure he was faithful, yah know?), and also, "Teen Angel" (about
a girl who gets run over by a train when she runs back to get her
boyfriend's class ring out of the car which has stalled on the train
    tracks - what a dummy!!)

| | Don't worry, Liz.
A couple of years ago, I wandered into the office with a wind-up mouse.
One of the office mates and I crawled under my desk and (carefully
supressing our giggles) sent it scurrying into Karen's cubicle next door.
Karen sat still, but the guy in her office jumped on his chair and screamed.
Martin.
(Background: the office area was in the basement of the Mill, in an
area that used to house the board shop's chemical storage area. The
offices are separated by old-style Dec cubicles (made from doors or
something) with a 4 inch gap between the bottom and the floor itself.
A week prior to the above incident, I had stretched my feet out under
my desk, and Karen saw this thing moving out of the corner of her eye,
and you can guess the rest.)

There is an interview with the actor who plays Vincent (sorry, I forget his
name) in this Sunday's Boston Globe TV section. He comments that he thinks
that Vincent's appeal lies in the fact that he is a totally devoted, loving,
and even magical protector who seeks absolutely *nothing* in return for all
of his devotion. That seems to me to be consistent with the episodes of the
show that I've seen.
Good grief. Seeks absolutely nothing in return? That isn't innocent or
honest; that's dehumanizing! We have many comments elsewhere in this file from
people who have complained of others who have tended to objectify other people.
What kind of real man would want absolutely nothing in return? And for that
matter, why is K(C?)atherine always made out to be the helpless wimp who has
to be rescued by her fearless protector? Why don't we ever see her rescue
Vincent, for a (pleasant) change? Doesn't this sort of "relationship" tend
to perpetuate the bad old roles for men and women that so many people else-
where in this file have tried to burst beyond?
The more I think of this show, the more I find it depressing.

You can pull a car out of gear into neutral without using the
clutch -- I do that all of the time. But it's been my experience
that if you try to put a car *in* gear without using the clutch,
it either doesn't go in gear, or it makes an awful grinding

| | Re: .234, .237, .238 (shifting without the clutch)

Shifting a synchronized transmission (like a car) without the clutch
is definitely not a good idea. It is very easy to ruin the
synchronizers, which don't like to have engine torque on them while
you are engaging or disengaging a gear. This is especially true
of pulling back through them coming out of gear.

As Dana points out, it is relatively easy to shift a truck transmission
without the clutch, and many drivers do it all the time. However,
essentially all heavy truck transmissions are unsynchronized, so
the part that could be damaged isn't there. If you double clutch
the shift, you get a little more leeway in adjusting the engine RPMs
to go into the next gear than you do if you don't use the clutch.
You also take less chance of chipping a tooth if you miss.

if I subliminally heard someone talking about it! I was thinking
about how different the kids looked in the older episodes when they
were all very young, compared to the last episodes where Greg was
about to go off to college. Would have been interesting, I must
admit, to see how different they must look now.

Ten years ago I went out to Los Angeles and visited some friends.
One of my friends went to school and was good friends with Susan Olsen
(who played Cindy Brady). All three of us went out for pizza and
a movie. She is not the same person as she was on TV. Told us
lots of (at the time) juicy gossip about backstage on the
    Brady set.

Speaking of juicy gossip about the Brady Bunch set, I heard the
other day that Greg and Marsha (not the characters, the actors who
played them) were romantically involved while the show was on. Is
this what you heard from Susan Olsen? My immediate response was:

the original show every Friday night and when my parents let

Actually, there is a notesfile support group for those of us
who have become hopelessly addicted to notes.

They have set aside enough disk space to receive 10,000 new

    	that should be sufficient.)

Hey you think you've worked at a New Englanderish place... We'll
how about this from an old Nutmeger. I worked at the Big Bunny
Supermarket as a bag-boy (it was okay to call us guys that then).
This company had three stores in one Stafford Springs Conn., and two
other stores somewhere in eastern Mass. What a horriable job! Bagging
groceries was several hours of standing in the same spot bending
over stuffing bags full of food and no matter what I put in where
there was something that I did wrong!

Its me again with a Big Bunny true confession.

I worked at this supermarket after school. I never missed work ever!
Well one friday I had something fun to do and I tried everything to get
someone to change schedules with me (that was probably a mistake
because I showed my hand!) no good noone would change for love or
money. So when the time came for me to get to work I handled it
like any red-blooded man...I had my mother call and say I was sick.
I was scum I know and my mother is a saint. I went to work the next
day and some big-shot told me if I ever did that again it was hang
up the grey apron forever and say goodbye to that $1.35 per hour.
Well that taught me a lesson...terriable employers are to be avoided
    at like all costs.

| | What a fun topic!
OK. Here's my true confession of my past :
While in high school in Orlando, FL, I was part of the Disney "cast"
of characters. I was one of the seven dwarfs (hint - one of the ones
whose name does not end in -ey) until I had a late growth spurt and
was too tall to be a dwarf. So I moved up to being the bunny rabbit and
Tweedle-dee.
It was a lot of fun - 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off and in
the tunnels changing wet clothes into dry ones (it gets very hot and humid
inside the costumes), employee's nights at EPCOT to give the park a test run,
etc... I put on my resume that I was "promoted" to tweedle dee, not that I
grew...shhh...don't tell my manager ;-).
True confession of my present :
When there's nothing better to do at 3am, I go outside and shoot hoops
or practice dunking (with the help of a trampoline :-) ) Once the town cops
drove by, stopped for a while, and drove on... Next time I'll ask them if
they want to join me.

    A couple more true confessions.

I've discovered that by having a roommate my fetishes about household
things has increased. I abhore coming into a bathroom and trying
to look into a mirror that is wicked spotty or has toothpaste on
it. Like wise the faucet. If (and I do say if) I ever get betrothed
and he is the type of person that leaves a huge wad of toothpaste
in the bottom of the sink or his whiskers all over the vanity, I'm
leaving. I let them know up front though.

    Another one:
I am sexist. I giggle when I see a men that I know noting in this
    conference.

Hi Shawn!!! Air Supply, huh? Wow, that's too bad man. Isn't there
like some organization you can join to help you kick the habit or
    something? 8^)

    Cheers,

I used to read Barbara Cartland historical romances, until I figured
out most of the women were petite, blonde-haired and blue-eyed,
the men tall, dark and handsome and they always ended up happy
    and rich.

When I was young I LOVED the Monkees, especially Davy Jones.

I HATE peas. I even went so far that when a friend told me she'd
make a stew with beef, rice and peas, I told her I'd pick them

I also read Barbara Cartland romances, when I was 15.

I guess ... what clued me ... in ... to the fact that my mind was ...
rotting away ... was all the breathless talking in ... dots ... by the
breathtakingly sweet and lovely ... girl ... who marries the prince ...
with the hawklike nose and ... cleft chin ...

There's no way to make that kind of speech sound normal when you're
"hearing" the dialogue in your head. (!)

P.S. A good antidote is the satirical "Love's Reckless Rash," by
Barbara Cartwheel. "Her lustrous jet-black hair rippled over her
shoulders like warm golden honey, fanned by the wind into bright jets

Yes! I also have "Love's Reckless Rash."

I also read Barbara Cartland when I was a teenage babysitter. This was
something I carefully hid, since it was not the sort of thing that a
"brain" would read. (I don't think I read any popular adult fiction
until I went to college, since it all appeared to be large novels by
Danielle Steel, Phyllis Whitney and company and "brains" wouldn't read
that stuff.) Her earlier stuff was much more interesting -- crammed
with plot and even some interesting interactions. She has, of course,
deteriorated considerably. I checked out one of her books about three
years ago. The woman starts a new paragraph for *every* sentence! It
    was so distracting.

I now read reams of Silhouette and Harlequin romances, but not the
British-style ones. (The British style is basically Barbara Cartland
in a modern period with token acknowledgement of women as functional
human beings....) The American-style romances have a less traditional
view of women, which makes them much more interesting and infinitely
    less irritating.

I'm keeping my eye peeled for the Georgette Heyer of contemporary
romances, but she's not shown herself yet.

| | I've kept this one quiet for a couple of days, only because I felt such
    a fool.

I walk each morning. Because Sydney has had sooooooo much rain the
past few weeks, and we are talking torrential downpour here, the
spiders have been out in force.

When I say spiders, I mean same as your tarantulas, only ours are brown
and called huntsmen. They do nip, although not poisonous. I am
terrified of them, you know the level, hysterically screaming. Well,
as I said, all the rain brings them out building webs in inappropriate
    places.

So while walking I have a patch about 1/2mile where there are
overhanging trees and vines leaving very little space to manoeuvre
myself. I passed this enormous spider in his web, and screamed (6am)
and kept walking. But I really had to make myself go back again.
The whole walk was pulling imaginery gossomer off me, and checking over
my shoulder for nightmares on my back.

The next day I crossed over the highway. Smarta** that I was didn't
realise there were more bushes on that side though. I'm at the moment
up the creek without that paddle I so desperately need. So, I've
compromised, I walk the same side till I get to the patch of (for me)
hell, then cross over for 1/2 mile, then back again. At least my heart
rate doesn't reach dangerous levels any more.

At least I respect snakes now. I don't like them, just respect them.
Thats quite a step forward for me.

Because of a medical emergency my OB induced labor on the 27th
of August, with my last child. At 11:15 that night, the baby
was ready to arrive. I announced to the doctor that I *did not*
want a baby born on an 'odd' day and that I would wait 'til mid-
night to go into to the delivery room. She looked at me like
I was crazy. She could see the baby's head but there was no
signs of stress on the baby so she waited the 45 minutes to midnight.
At midnight, straight up, I was wheeled into delivery. Fifteen
minutes later I was told to push. Three minutes later Michael
was born (on the 28th of August). I would have preferred the
20th (a *really* even number in my mind) but the 28th was, by far,
    better than the 27th.

What a relief! I'm not the only weirdo who likes things which can
be divided by 2, or better yet; 5! Originally, multiples of 2 were
satisfying, now I prefer multiples of 5.
I became very concerned with this preoccupation when I saw a news clip
about a woman who took it to an extreme. When she took something
out of the fridge she opened and closed the fridge door 5 times.
On the 5th time she removed whatever it was she wanted (milk in
this case). She poured the milk into a glass, and tapped her teeth
against the glass 5 times before drinking. Then she put the milk back
and opened and closed the door 5 more times.
Later she drove to the gas station. Before getting out of the car,
she threw the door open hard enough so it would bounce back. She
	did this 5 times ...
This obsession/compulsion basically ruined her life. She's now in
councelling trying to give up some of these habits.
It really got me to thinking about how she may have started out...
And at what point does it get to be a problem?

When paying for a meal with my credit card, I calculate (aprx.) 15% of the
total bill. Then based on whether I thought the service was better or worse
than average, I add or subtract from the calculated tip enough so that when
I added it to the total bill, the amount would come out even. (At an
expensive restaurant/multiple people, even==multiple of five. At moderate,
even==multiple of two. Cheap, even==even dollar.)
I wonder what those waitresses/waiters thought of 19.2% tips that came out

 re: obsessive/compulsive behavior
My middle daughter has been subject to obsessive/compulsive behaviors. The
answer to the question "where do you draw the line?" is "when it starts to
interfere with your life."
Rene had many "things" (compulsions). A few quick examples are: she would not
throw away empty containers of perfume, deodorant, etc. She had to turn lights
on and off four times before she could turn it on or off for good. She had
to touch her knick-knacks in certain ways, tapping them a certain number of
times, etc. She had a thing for angles- 90 and 45 especially- her things had
to be lined up correctly. She had to arrange her stuffed animals in a certain
way- certain animals had to touch certain other animals. She absolutely HAD
to make her bed in the morning (which on the surface seems ok, but it was a
compulsion, not neatness which drove her to that.) All of these things were
done because she felt if she didn't "bad things would happen." Of course, when
she did all of her things and bad things happened anyway, she invent new
compulsions. Any many of her compulsions caused the very "bad things" to happen
that she sought to avoid. She could not write certain words- this caused her
much trouble in her english class. It's very tough to get under control when it
gets to this point.

| | Funny stuff! I never knew other people shared crazy tendencies. I have
the strangest habit. Ever since I learned to type when I was about 15,
I will envision a word, and mentally type it (sometimes actually moving
my fingers) according to multiples of three (for the word MENTAL, for
example, I will "mentally" type the MEN, then pause, then the TAL). So
when I see or think of a word, I will quickly calculate if it's a
multiple of 3, then go through my "pretend-typing" routine. Strange.
The funniest thing is that when I originally started doing this, it was
in multiples of 2. As you can imagine, I was doing this all day long
since 1/2 of all words are of an even number of letters. It was driving
me mad, so I strove to break myself of the habit by switching over to
"3" words! I finally gave up trying to quit...

north don't have 'em as much as roads downs south or out west (and
"down under" too, evidently) because it snows here and the plows just
scrape 'em off or damage them.

    G'Day Bonnie,

As the notes after mine have pointed out, 'cats-eyes' are small
reflecting objects that are use to denote the lane markings. They are
either yellow or white. They even retract into a little rubber housing
when you run over them. This is done to automatically keep them clean
by rubbing on the rubber. They are especially good in wet weather as
the normal painted lines can become hard to see when wet and at night
these things shine quite bright (that's how they get their name). Most
of our major freeways and highways have them and that is why is it is
quite difficult to try to dodge them. Travelling at somewhere between
110-140 you pass by them pretty quickly!

    David.

Well, that's different...

I used to do the same thing when I lived in California and Oregon. I
had a great time seeing how fast I could go and still miss the little
    bumps in the road. :-)

I don't play addition games with license plates, though. I memorize
'em! I still haven't figured out why. It's just sort of automatic. I
tend to do the same thing with phone numbers - whether I need to or
not. Luckily I have a very short term memory with these things so my
mind isn't completely cluttered with useless combinations of numbers.
    :-)

Whoops. Forgot you US types haven't found the world of metric yet. It
was of course 110-140 Kilometres/hour, although I have been known to
                                 ^^
    nudge the 100mph (160kph) too.

I've always refered to them as drunk bumps out here because I was
once told they were to aid people in realizing that they'd drifted out
    of their traffic lane.

The ones on the freeways in CA reflect white to cars travelling in
the proper direction on the freeway and red to cars travelling in the
wrong direction. You can see the red reflection in your rear view
mirror if the you're driving into the sun.

Works great when you're falling asleep at the wheel, too (my downfall).

< The ones on the freeways in CA reflect white to cars travelling in

This can be a real freak-out. I was on the wrong side of the road as part
of an official detour one night and those red reflections made me *very*
uneasy. I kept having to remind myself that what I was doing was legal
(and safe).
We don't have those here in Colorado, and I sure do miss them, especially
when it rains. Shellie told me (like what a previous noter said) that
it was because of the snow plows.

I've seen cat's eyes in colder areas. Instead of having them raised
above the surface the reflectors are in little pits. That way the
plows just slide straight on over.
