32.1 | Another Problem ? | SHIRE::BIZE | | Wed Jun 22 1988 03:54 | 12 |
| Another problem I have encountered is, since Monday, being told
"no more new notes" every time I enter the conference. This has
led me to get out of the conference, as there was nothing new to
read. This morning, I just thought I'd do a DIR anyway and, surprise,
quite a few new notes!
I wonder if anybody else has encountered the same problem, and knows
how to get around it?
Thanks for your help.

| another helpful hint:
Joana, when you added Volume 2 to you notebook, did you use the
same "entryname" or "nickname" as you used for Volume 1? For example,
if the entry name for Volume 1 was "Womannotes", did you issue a
command like:
Notes> modify entry womannotes/file=mosaic::womannotes.v2
If so, Notes won't recognize Volume 2 as a new file -- it knows,
for example, that you've read through Notes 1, 2, and so on. Here
are two things you can do.
1) Reset the "seen map". Issue a command like:
Notes> set seen/before=1-jun-1988
This will let Notes know that you want everything written after
1-jun-1988 to be "unseen"
2) Use a different "nickname" for the file. (But don't use the "modify
entry" command to change it!). This will force Notes to recognize
Volume 2 as a "new file".
Notes> add entry WV2 /file=mosaic::womannotes.v2
Notes> del entry womannotes
Hope this helps

trying to access volume 1 returns "File not found".
doing a DIR RAINBO::NOTES$LIBRARY: reveals that volume 1 is actually
WOMANNOTES-V1.OFFLINE.
Any clue as to when it will once again be online?

This time I am impressed. I admit that I scoffed when the
original moderator decided to use non-standard terminology, and I
even sent protest mail about the silly use of non-default file
extensions. But I'll take my golf visor off to Maggie, if she is
indeed responsible for the world's first online, offline file.

| I am indeed responsible for that, so off with the visor, Donald!
Gimme a break, guys. I'm trying to crunch the file and renamed it
because I got confused about how the crunch would work and wanted to
let people know it was out-of-service. To call a file "offline" is no
sillier than to call a printer "offline"...the term itself comes from
the navy ...the sailed navy, I think... where a ship that was unfit for
combat was "taken off-line": withdrawn from the battle-line.
