|
I'm wondering how many people reading this know someone with epilepsy;
maybe a friend or relative? Or, maybe even a coworker. What about
yourself? Do you have epilepsy? You would be surprised to learn just
how many people do.
A couple of questions to ask yourself:
1. If I saw someone having an epileptic seizure, would I know...
(a) ... what to do for them?
(b) ... what NOT to do?
2. Would I recognize an epileptic seizure if I saw one?
The answer to question number 2 is: it is very possible you may not.
There are a number of forms of epilepsy, some very mild and some much
more severe than others.
On Wednesday, May 17, in cooperation with Health Services of the Spit
Brook Road facility, I will be hosting a seminar on epilepsy awareness
and first aid. This seminar will be held in the Babbage Auditorium,
ZK1-3, beginning at 12:30. Along with those present from Health
Services, our guest speaker will be a Neurologist. Time has been
allotted for answering questions anyone may have.
I hope you will make the time to come. You never know when someone
with epilepsy might need your help.
See you there,
Beckie

| WOMEN OUTDOORS Tenth Annual GATHERING
June 15 - June 18, 1989
The WO Gathering is an event where approximately 200 women from the
Northeast and other parts of the country come together for a weekend of
workshops, activities, entertainment and fun. It will be held at the
W. Alton Jones Campus, Environmental Education Center, University of
Rhode Island, West Greenwich, RI.
Examples of workshops from past years include bike maintenance,
canoeing, kayaking, planning a long backpacking trip, handling a chain
saw, ethical investment and finances, journal-writing, basic electrical
repair, mushroom identification, beach ecology, massage, yoga,
birdwatching. I haven't seen this year's list, but you could expect to
see about the same variety. Activities may include things like hikes,
canoe trips, biking on Block Island, wildflower walks, or whatever.
Entertainment this year will include a contra dance and an adventure
slide show presentation.
Fees vary according to whether you want to stay in a cabin, platform
tent, or your own tent, whether you want to stay 2 nights (Fri - Sun) or
3 (Thurs - Sun). For example, a member staying 2 nights in her own
tent would pay $60 for the weekend ($75 for non-members). A member
staying 3 nights in a cabin would pay $100 ($115 for non-members).
non-member fees include 1 yr membership. These fees include meals, and
registration for most workshops, entertainment, etc. Some workshops
which require extra supplies or paid leaders (ex: ferry to Block
island, ropes course leaders) may require additional fees.
If you're interested in registering, send mail to NATASH::MOORE. I'll
send you a registration form. Upon registering, you'll receive
confirmation and info about preregistering for workshops and
activities, travel directions, etc.
See note 11.47 for more information about Women Outdoors.

- 6/18 in southern RI) include:
basic bike repair intuitive massage
swimming hikes
planning backpacking trips herbs for natural healing

101 ways to support the environment compact car camping
dream interpretation workshop Block Island bike trip
ecofeminism map & compass video
12 step program meetings
forum on enjoying the outdoors - lesbian and straight together

There will be more; this is a partial list. Some of the possibles, tho
not definite, include rock-climbing, wilderness photography, first aid,
and a slide show of a trip to Nepal.

(with your home address) to NATASH::MOORE.

Certainly not to be outdone by my buddy, Catherine T. :-) I will use
this note to announce New Hampshire's Second Gay Pride Day. Since the
political climate in NH is slightly different than that in MA, we have a
different format. The NH Gay Pride Committee felt that it is still
not safe for us to have a march, so instead we are doing a rally at
the state house in Concord on Friday night (6/16) (our very first!)
and a Celebration day on Saturday (6/17).
The rally on Friday night consists of a speech by Reverend Kim Harvey
of the Provincetown Unitarian Church, as well as speeches from some of
our committee members and some local politicians (none of them have
accepted our offer yet--keep your fingers and toes crossed). The
entertainment will be provided by Heather Bishop (I get to help with
the sound--YIIPPPEEEE!).
On Saturday we will take over Pat's Peak Ski resort in Henniker, NH
for an all-day extravaganza. Our own Rosalyn Taylor-O'Neale will be
a featured speaker, and entertainment will be provided by Kate
Clinton, Romanovsky and Phillips, and Lucie Blue Tremblay!! (Yes,
you read that correctly). The day starts at 10 am and will end that
evening with a dance.
Anyone needing more info can contact me. Please, please join us.

10.47 | THE DAY AFTER rally | VIDEO::LIEN | | Tue May 23 1989 13:42 | 26 |
| Mass Choice is organizing " THE DAY AFTER" rally - a rally on the
day after the announcement of the supreme court case on Webster vs.
Reproductive Health Services. The rally will take place in front of the
state house. The prediction is that most likely the supreme court will allow
state legislatures to impose greater restrictions on abortion. Therefore the
rally will be a message sent to the Mass state legistators to put no further
restrictions on abortions in Mass.
For those who might be interested in the rally, please send me
your pole number so I can send you the flyer from Mass Choice. The date of
announcement of the supreme court decision is unknown, but it's expected
to be sometime in June. Since the date for the rally is unknown (becuase
the date of the supreme court announcement is unknown), Mass Choice would
like those who are interested to put their phone numbers in the flyer,
so that they can be contacted right after the announcement of the supreme
court decision.
I also have a petition in a letter form that will address directly
to the legislators. For those who are interested in signing the petition,
please send me your pole number.
Please specify whether you're interested in the rally or the petition
or both.

** NOTER'S PARTY ALERT ** NOTER'S PARTY ALERT ** NOTER'S PARTY ALERT **
This is the official alert! There will be a party at my house on Sunday July
18, 1989! My house is in Leominster, MA. Just to give you a little bit of
incentive to come, there is an in ground swimming pool with a diving board.
For those of you who aren't into swimming, you should still bring your
bathing suits. WHY??? Well, there's a hot tub downstairs that you also might
enjoy!! So, come and have a great time!
This will be a pot luck party. I will supply the hot dogs and hamburgers.
Bring your favorite dishes for everyone to enjoy. Or if you don't have a
favorite dish, or just CAN'T cook, donations would be gladly accepted toword
paper goods, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. Also, if someone would like to bring
soda, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, BYOB.
So, mark your calanders. Sunday July 18th. If it does rain, the party will
still go on down in the basement. Hot tub is inside, so we can still enjoy
that.
Please respond to this note, or send mail to REFINE::TAYLOR no later than
July 14th. Tell me what you will bringing and how many people you will bring.
Hope to see everyone there!

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS FROM CORPORATE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DVN BROADCAST: TAKING THE LEAD - WORKPLACE RESPONSES TO ELDERCARE
On September 22, in conjunction with the National Council on Aging,
Digital is proud to participate in the national teleconference
"Taking the Lead: Workplace Responses to Eldercare". National Council on
Aging received support for this teleconference from Corporate Contributions
and Digital Information Service (DIS). Digital will be hosting
the conference for external participants at the 4 sites-- Dallas (DLO),
Spitbrook (ZKO), Colorado Springs (CXO), and Greenville (GSO).
We are pleased to announce that arrangements have been made to concurrently
broadcast the conference across DVN to the remaining 72 DVN sites.
This teleconference provides an opportunity for you to receive state of the
art information about this emerging workforce issue from leaders of eldercare
initiatives. Says Erline Belton, Manager, Corporate Employee Relations, "We
realize that increasing numbers of our employees will be responsible for some
care to their aging parents and we are endeavoring to formulate an eldercare
strategy as part of Digital's broader Work/Life Balance initiatives".
Digital employees can go for free to any of the 72 DVN locations which are not
serving as a host site. (That is any site except Spitbrook, Dallas, Greenville
and Colorado Springs). Just contact the Site DVN manager to make sure a
viewing room is reserved. The 2 national segments you will receive are from
11:00 to 12:30 and 3:30 to 5:00 Eastern Standard Time. You will also receive
information on ordering resource materials NCOA has developed on Eldercare.
Note:
The general public is invited to attend any of the official NCOA "host sites",
(Digital Dallas, Spitbrook, Greenville, and Colorado Springs as well as 8
locations provided by other companies). Digital employees may register
directly with the National Council on Aging if they wish to attend at a
national host site, a $95 registration fee is required. Attendees at the
national host sites will view the same national broadcast listed above, plus a
live panel discussion at each site scheduled between the 2 national segments
plus receive a resource book. To register with NCOA call 1-800-424-9046,
ext.355. Due to limited seating, all participants at the national host
sites must pre-register.
We encourage you to take advantage of the NO cost, access to this
teleconference via our existing DVN sites. For the name of the DVN site
nearest you, consult LIVEWIRE or call the DVN program office at 249-4461.
A complete list of DVN sites is also available on VTX EDSERV. For any
other questions about the teleconference, call Phyllis Bailey,

| I posted this in THEATRE as well. Since the main character is a woman, and
since I have a vested interest, I figured it could go here.
Sophocles' Antigone is being performed at The Performance Place (Elizabeth
Peabody House; 277 Broadway; Sommerville). It opens this weekend (Thurs-Sat)
and runs for 3 weekends. It's set in the Middle East. I know the director, and
his productions are always entertaining, and almost always as
thought-provoking.

On Oct. 26 there will be a special program at the Nashua Public
Library at 7:00 PM which will have family members, a Hospice
worker, a former drug addict and a clergy person to share
experiences of living with AIDS.
Co-sponsoring this are the American Red Cross, the New Hampshire
AIDS Foundation, the Greater Nashua AIDS Task Force, and Home
Health and Hospice Care.
I don't know where I can get this info out to the general public,
but thought you might want to put it in some notesfile.
It is okay to use my name. The title of the discussion
is "Living with AIDS: How Peoples Lives Have Been Touched".
I also suggest that they call the Nashua Public Library
at 603-883-4141 for any other information.

| [This is probably the wrong place, but since my previous long note here
got eaten by the conference compacter, I thought I'd satisfy the curiosity
of all the people [both of them] who asked about my costume.]
I went as Harry Tuttle.
Harry Tuttle is the air conditioner repair man from the movie "Brazil". "Wait!"
I hear you cry, "how can Charles 'Outrageous' Haynes have gone as an
*air conditioner repairman*?!". Well, he's no ordinary repairman. Rather than
go into *all* of the details of the movie, let me just say that he fights
against a massive bureacracy, and fixes air conditioners without the proper
paperwork. My kinda guy. He also tends to rapell off of tall buildings after
he finishes. *Really* my kind of guy.
So I rapelled off of the roof of UCO into the middle of the DEC Palo Alto
Halloween party. Four stories. Dressed as an airconditioner repairman.
I walked away with "most outrageous" again... :-)

re: .101, Mez
I haven't seen any of these movies, but here's a little more about
them. I got the info off the Brattle's Nov-Dec calendar.
Seven Women -- Seven Sins
Seven internationally renowned feminist filmmakers reinterpret the
seven deadly sins. A compilation film from Bette Gordon (USA),
Chantal Akerman (Belgium), Ulrike Ottinger (Germany), Valie Export
(Austria), Laurence Gavron (France), Helke Sander (Germany), and
Maxie Cohen (USA).
C'Mon Babe (Danke Schoen)
Sharon Sandusky's look at the ritualistic suicide of lemmings and
romantic obsession.
To A Safer Place
A benefit for the committee to end the sexual abuse of children and
the Virginia Lalonde fund.
Directed by Beverly Shaffer, written by Shirley Turcotte
Sexually abused by her father from infancy through early
adolescence, Shirley Turcotte is now in her thirties and has
succeeded in building a rich and full life. In this award-winning
film, she retraces her family nightmare with the help of her
mother, sister, and two brothers, all victims of sexual and
physical abuse. The message is one of hope, struggling,
encouraging survivors to speak out and break the silence with
dignity. $10.00 donation suggested. For more info call the Boston
Area Rape Crisis Center: (617) 492-7273
Surname: Viet, Given name: Nam
Directed by Trinh T. Minh-ha
Vietnamese born Trinh T. Minh-ha's profoundly personal documentary
explores the role of Vietnamese women, historically and in
contemporary society.
News from Home
Directed by Chantal Akerman
Akerman returns to the personal avant-garde essay to evoke a
ghost-town Manhattan. The news from home comes through "love
letters" to the filmmaker in New York from her mother in Belgium.
Out of Our Time
Directed by Casi Pacilio and L.M. Keys
The story of two groups of women who are linked through history.
Valeria, an aspiring poet, finds a box of letters belonging to her
grandmother, whose world was 1930s European salon society. Through
a clever narrative form, the film examines choices and struggles,
and the links and differences among friendship, feminism, and
personal fulfillment in these two eras.
Marianne and Juliane
Directed by Margarethe von Trotte with Jutta Lampe, Barbara Sukowa
A landmark political feminist film about the relationship between
two sisters: Juliane, who works within the system as a feminist
editor, and Marianne, who is a radical political terrorist.
Second Awakening of Christa Klages
Directed by Margarethe von Trotta
Written and directed by von Trotte, this film established her as
the leading spokeswoman of the New German Cinema and has been an
inspiration to international feminist filmmmaking. The story
centers on a young woman who robs a bank in order to finance her
daycare center.
Vagabond
Directed by Agnes Varda with Sandrine Bonnaire, Macha Meril
A simple story of a young drifter. Varda gives us a powerful and
superbly directed film with a strong female character at its center
who challenges conventional lifestyle.
(As I remember it, the "strong female character" "gets what she
deserves" in the end. I'm not sure I'd call this feminist filmmaking.)
Kung Fu Master
Directed by Agnes Varda with Jane Birkin, Mathieu Demy
Due to its deceiving title and lack of critical support, this newly
released film from the leading female director of France has been
disappointingly overlooked. The story of a mother who begins a
love affair with a classmate of her 15-year-old daughter and the
difficulties she experiences both emotionally and culturally.
Unfinished Diary
Directed by Marilu Mallet
Chilean emigre Mallet, living in french speaking Canada, explores
the profound cultural silences she experiences as a woman artist in
exile in her semi-autobiographical docu-drama. As she struggles to
make a film about this experience she interviews other Chilean
exiles, including Isabel Allende, daughter of the assassinated
Chilean leader. A profound film about language, gender, exile and
immigration.
A Man When He is a Man
Directed by Valeria Sarmiento
A stylistically imaginative and chilling documentary on the
destructive repercussions of machismo.

10.111 | Women at Work Seminar Series | HANDY::MALLETT | Barking Spider Industries | Mon Nov 20 1989 09:13 | 92 |
| The December seminar in the continuing LESM/LES "Women at Work"
series is entitled "Give Yourself Credit: Personal Financial
Planning".
The following seminar description is reprinted with permission
from the brochure, "Women at Work: Risk, empowerment & self-esteem".
If anyone would like a copy of the brochure which describes the other
seminars being offered this year, please contact me. Registration
information is provided below.
********************************************************
Give Yourself Credit: Personal Financial Planning. Anne L. Greenwood,
Second Vice President, Smith Barney; Wed., December 6, 1989 10:00 -
12:00; Sheridan Hinchcliff conference room; MLO5-4 (Across from caf.)
Meeting personal objectives is the core financial planning. Each
person has his or her particular needs which change at different
phases of one's life, e.g. home, family, education, self-employment,
retirement, etc. Included in this workshop are discussions of assess-
ment of financial situations, planning for changing income patterns,
and relating risk to return from different investments. The objectives
are to personalize and demystify the concepts of financial planning,
and to draw a clear relationship between personal goals and investment
decision making.
********************************************************
"Women at Work: Risk, Empowerment & Self-esteem" is a seminar series
sponsored by Digital Equipment Corporation's Low End Systems
Manufacturing and Low End Systems and organized to reflect the needs of
LESM/LES employees. The areas of focus are valuing differences,
personal empowerment, professional skills, personal development, and
management skills.
This series is presented by HamlinFox Associates, Inc., Marblehead,
MA (617)631-5428, in cooperation with the LESM/LES W.O.M.E.N.'S
Development Research Group.
The series is available to LESM and LES employees only. To
pre-register, send: Name, Node, DTN and LESM/LES affiliation to
FRAGLE::Seminars. If you do not have access to electronic mail,
call Donna Venuto at DTN 226-2198 or Arlene Gibson at DTN 223-4212.
Space is limited; register early!
Qualified employees may sign up for seminars on either an individual
or group basis. That is, you may request registration at a single
seminar, a selected group of seminars, or all seminars. Simply
specify (by title and date) which seminar(s) you want to register for.
You may register for several/all seminars with one request or you may
make individual requests for particular seminars over the course of
the coming months. Most people sign up on an individual seminar basis,
so "register early" is meant to indicate that it helps to register a
few weeks prior to any particular presentation. A schedule of the
seminar dates is provided below. In the coming months, I'll post the
seminar descriptions several weeks in advance of the events.
Future seminars include:
January 17, 1990 "Managing Anger and Learning to Have Fun: For
workaholics and overachievers" Phyllis Chesler,
PhD, pyschologist, and author of "Women and Madness"

David, I don't know which alphabetizing scheme you're looking at

I would've reverse-alphabetized the list so she could be first.

Nancy, teco (yes, it rhymes with pico) stands for Text Editing

been a version of Teco for every DEC machine since the PDP-6 (and
possibly earlier). It's a wonderful hackers language, and was
later used as an implementation language for other editors.

[ Directions to Amory's from points north]
Basically: 3 South to 495 South to 117 East;
Stay on 117 East for about 17 minutes; You'll pass the inter-
section of 62 and 117; then they merge and you'll be riding
on 62/117 for another 5 minutes or so. You'll pass a shopping
center on your left, a Baybanks ATM on your right as you approach
downtown Maynard. You will come to a Y shaped intersection where
a gas station is on your left and a red brick building is on your
right. Take a left here - this is Main Street.
Amory's and the post office will be on the left and the Mill
will be on the right. Park on the street or else in the Mill yard.

| Thanks to Nancy for organizing this wonderful party. It was so nice
to see so many old friends and make a few new ones. What a wonderful
and supportive network that has grown from this conference!
I was listening to Pete Seeger's We Shall Overcome CD recently. The
full concert was at Carnegie hall was just reissued as a 2 CD set.
This album brings back a lot of memories for me as my parents used to
listen to it as I was growing up. Hearing Pete and the audience
singing We Shall Overcome with such force and conviction brought tears
to my eyes.
I am reminded of the struggle that many of us are still working for -
the equality and respect of all beings - especially men and women -
freedom to be who we are regardless of our gender - and a safe and
supportive environment for all people. To this wonderful community
who has done so much and who is living this dream - have faith.
We Shall Overcome some day!

Women to plan, by consensus, an agenda for the 21st century. In addition,
there will be nightly concerts, lots of workshops, worship services, and an
opportunity for each person to concentrate on a spiritual discipline during
the conference.
WHEN: April 20-25, 1990. (Friday evening to Wednesday Noon). Plese plan
to be with us for the entire time in order not to miss any of the program
or performances.
WHERE: WOMANQUEST will be held on the Outdoor Education Campus of George
Williams College in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Easily accessible from
airports in both Chicago and Milwaukee, George Williams College is a
rustic, wooded camp on the shores of lovely Lake Geneva. Hike in the
woods, watch the sunset on the lake, come experience the arrival of spring
in Wisconsin!
Registration: $150
Room and Board: $135 Dorm style housing - shared bath
$169 Triple with private bath (limited #)
$195 Double with private bath (limited #)
Childcare: Because of the length and intensity of the programming, the
cost of housing, and the stress of travel, mothers are encouraged to seek
childcare in their own communities. Local churches and Women's groups are
being asked to help locate creative and supportive childcare arrangements
so women can attend. If you need help with childcare options, write to
Womanquest, c/o Diane Banta, 1301 Barclay Rd., Deerfield, IL 60015 (312)
948-1340. In addition, on-site childcare will be provided on a cooperative
basis for participating mothers.
WOMANQUEST will offer two key elements in addition to Workshops, Music, and
Theme Speakers. There will be an opportunity for each participant to focus
on a Spiritual Discipline or Journey for indepth study; and an opportunity
for women to work together by consensus to develop an agenda for Unitarian
Universalist Women for the 21st century.
Spiritual Disciplines/Journeys: Everyone will be able to choose a
spiritual discipline or journey to follow throughout the conference. The
same group of women will be together for a sesion each day to develop
understanding and bonding within the group as we journey together. To
assist the planning committee, please indicate below your interests or
suggest additional topics.
Consensus process: We envision a process whereby UU Women of diverse age,
geography, and organizational affiliation will join to address several
areas of concern for future women in our movement and the world. Achieving
consensus statements in small groups which will feed into a modified
parliamentary assembly, we hope to forge a document which will inspire and
gather UU women, including the previously unaffiliated, to work together
towrd common goals in the coming years. We envision an opportunity for
concerted effort and focus on the Unitarian Universalist feminist agenda.

ARE THERE MALE-FEMALE DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE?
January 18, 1990, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, Cauchy Conference Room, ZK3-1
Maybe the debate over whether there are gender differences in the workplace
sidesteps a larger issue. Perhaps neither men nor women feel they get equal
return for what they contribute. This workshop will include an overview
of the biology, sociology, and psychology of sex differences. It will address
why men and women are rewarded differently and how to change inequitable
outcomes. There will be a presentation of Sumru Erkut's research in the field
of workplace gender differences, case presentations, as well as group and
individual exercises.
Sumru Erkut, PhD, is a visiting research scholar at Wellesley College
Center for Research on Women and co-editor of a book on daughters and
mothers. She maintains a private practice in Cambridge.

10.148 | Sunday 1/28 "Walk to End Violence Against Women" | SYSENG::BITTLE | all my instincts, they return | Fri Jan 26 1990 14:56 | 40 |
| This has already been mentioned in 3 replies in 2 different
topics, but this seems like an appropriate place to share
some details from what I've learned about the march this Sunday.
I spoke on the phone with Jackson Katz, the founder of the
group called "Real Men" that Linda mentioned in the "But
there's hope yet" topic for about an hour this morning.
The walk sponsored by "Real Men" is called a
"Walk to End Violence against Women". Both women and men
are welcome.
Here are the details:
The march begins at Watertown Square this Sunday at noon.
It is a 12km walk finishing at Park St. T-station.
At approx. 3pm, there will be speakers and a ceremony
to honor female victims of male-violence. I can't remember
exactly, but I think he said something about a documentary
or slide show or something...
There will be speakers from the Mass Coalition of Battered Women
and a woman whose husband psychologically abused her and murdered
their daughter.
Trying to explain to him how I heard about him and his group was
fun. "Well, it's called Womannotes, and it's a place where women
and men can talk about topics of interest to women. It's really
cool - we talked about everything from "S&M" to "Taking Action for
Choice" to "lingerie" to guns to gynecologists in Real Time
online discussions... I invited him to the next =wn= party
(David, is that OK? - I'm not sure that I'm going yet!!). D!,
are you going to be there :-)? He seemed quite knowledgeable
about how S&M has been received by the feminist community.
I'm surprised and encouraged that people (men!) care that much
about the violence and threat of violence women face.

| On Saturday, 17 February, Ibraheim's World Beat will be playing at
Jonny D's in Somerville, MA at Davis Square. I had a chance to see
this band at the Somerville Arts Festival this summer. They are
really fun! The band consists of women and men from around the world.
The intent is to actually live the dream of brotherhood and
sisterhood of all peoples through their music. The band has a great,
positive energy. When I saw them, they brought all the kids in the
audience up to the stage to dance. Their style is African based rock
and roll and it is almost impossible *not* to dance to. I would guess
that they start around 9:00 PM or so.
Anyways, I'll be going. I thought I would also try and organize a
grazing before the show at Rudis (Mexican Food) in Ball Square. If
anyone's interested, send me mail and I mail directions and a time out
later this week. So, if you are looking for something to do, come on
down.

| I read something in the paper, but was so sure that other, more
"with-it" noters would have details, that I didn't save the article.
From memory, the red arm-bands signify:
(1) that women and children who are victims of domestic violence do not
have/celebrate Valentine's Day
(2) protesting lack of relevant law enforcement and/or lack of
sufficient funds for helping the victims
If I haven't got the details straight, at least the essence is right.

watch it again.

THE CYCLES OF DEVELOPMENT AND SCHOOL READINESS
A presentation by Nancy Richard
Tuesday, April 24th
7:30 pm Saint John Neumann Catholic Church
Rte 101A, Merrimack, NH
(Near Alexander's and Scandinavian Design)
Sponsored by the church Mothers' Group
Donation: $4.00
As children grow, they pass through developmental stages that are both very
observable and very predictable. Some of these stages are smooth and produce
rather calm and satisfactory behavior. Others are very turbulent, and create
behavior that is disturbing and puzzling to even the most understanding of
parents and teachers. The developmental stages from age two to sixteen will be
explored with special emphasis given to the pre-school years.
Children develop at different rates. Neither chronological age nor IQ is a
guarantee that a child is ready to start school. Rather, it is developmental
level which is the main factor in *overall* school success. By paying attention
to this factor when children are entering school, we can not only help insure a
successful school experience, but dramatically cut remedial ranks.
Nancy Richard's personal background:
Present Position: National Lecture Staff, Gesell Institute of Human Development
Conducts School Readiness and Developmental Observation Workshops which
include administration and interpretation of Gesell assessments.
Educational Consultant and Lecturer - child development, school
readiness, and early childhood education.
Formerly: Assistant Director, NH School Readiness Project
Publications: One Piece of the Puzzle, A School Readiness Manual

10.160 | PROJECT BREAD: The Walk for Hunger | CADSYS::PSMITH | foop-shootin', flip city! | Wed Mar 14 1990 16:27 | 26 |
|
Sunday, May 6, 1990 -- 21st annual walk!
Registration from 7-9:00 am, Boston Common near
Charles Street across from the Public Garden.
PROJECT BREAD is a yearly walk for hunger in Boston, held on the first
Sunday in May. It's a *20* mile walk and the ranges of people you meet
are truly inspiring. It's a huge event; streets are closed to allow
the human flood to pass through. This will be my fourth time.
They are very well-organized and provide water, portable toilets, and
first aid at each checkpoint. They provide free drinks and light
refreshments at a snack spot halfway. If you prefer not to walk, they
need volunteers to help from behind the scenes.
From the brochure: "Funds go to 250 local Boston agencies that provide
food for the hungry. These agencies include food pantries, soup
kitchens, and shelters for the homeless, as well as urban gardens and
advocacy programs. Also, up to 10% of the funds will be distributed to
hunger relief programs abroad."
Registration Card and Sponsor Sheets available from Project Bread,
617-723-5000.

minutes. They will have the head of the Boston Rape Crisis Center to
answer phone-in questions. The caller does NOT have to go on the
air...they're having producers answer the phones offline so that
questions can be asked anonymously if desired.

| The Granite State Ballet of Nashua will present its spring program
Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Elm Street Auditorium.
The program features _Sleeping_Beauty_ [with Kat Schutzman as one of the
fairy attendants, but that doesn't have anything to do with why I'm entering
this :) :)] and a jazz piece (also featuring Kat Schutzman).
Tickets are $10 from the studio (603)889-8408 or 882-8586.
Come on out and support local culture -- they aren't quite the Boston
ballet yet, but this is a full professional performance, not a recital.

Walking the Rainbow Trail: A Wilderness Rite of Passage for Women
Nancy Goddard and Colleen Kelley
July 8-14
Course # 1820 $390
Birth, menses, marriage, divorce, midlife, menopause, death--these are
a woman's rites of passage, times of outer changes and inner shifts
during which the need for clarity and guidance are strong. But where
are we to find guidance during these times, when our culture has
provided us neither the tools nor the support for conscious change? A
wilderness encounter in loving community with other women can provide
the setting for profound personal growth and rebirth.
This journey is a rite of passage for women in the stunning mountainous
beauty of the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico. The Southwest is a place
of great power and cultural richness, where native peoples have
continued unbroken their sacred traditions, ceremonies and rituals.
Here, amid the silence of the wilderness, women explore their deep
connection to each other and to Mother Earth, and find the support the
"real world" has not provided.
We backpack for three days, set up a base camp, learn essential
backcountry skills, establish a supportive community and enjoy
ceremonial time together. Campwork, singing, drumming and sacred
teachings from Native American and Buddhist traditions help us discover
our individual and collective voices, and prepare us for an optional
48-hour ceremonial solo experience.
Nancy Giddar, counselor, singer and pilgrimage staff member with the
Ojai Foundation, has worked with medicine people and led wilderness
journeys for eight years. Colleen Kelley, artist, writer, ritual
leader and counselor, has a black belt in aikido and has co-led many
wilderness journeys and pilgrimages.
No previous experience is required; however, women need to be in good
physical condition as backpacking is at altitudes of 6,500 and 10,500
feet, sometimes over rugged terrain. Trip begins in Santa Fe. Fee
does not include airfare or personal equipment. Limited to 14 women.

"UNLEASHING THE POTENTIAL"
By Donna A. Taylor
Corporate MEM AA/Valuing Differences Mgr.
EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DEC'S VALUING DIFFERENCES PROGRAM,
BUT WERE TOO BUSY TO ASK!
*Valuing differences at Digital is much more than merely acknowledging that
each of us "brings something unique to the table".
*Digital's Valuing Differences Program is designed to "unleash" the vast po-
tentional of added excellence contained within our diverse workforce.
*Majority contributors, minority contributors, women, foreign nationals, dif-
ferences of race and age; all fuel the many creative engines that make this
corporation go. The challenge for the 90's is to harness these diverse engines
and use their power to drive corporate excellence.
*How does Valuing Differences differ from Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO)
or Affirmative Action Programs (AAP)? Significantly: learning to accept and
tolerate differences was the theme of the 60's and 70's; but learning to cap-
italize on diversity is the name of the game in the 90's.
*Digital Equipment Corporation through its global integration and diverse
workforce is excellently positioned to "Have It Now".

Subj: Women helping women, a great opportunity. Please distribute....
Please distribute as widely as possible.....March is Women's Month, good timing!
The Digital Women's Basketball League is sponsoring our 2nd All Star Game for
Charity on April 19th. The charity is ROSIE'S PLACE, a shelter for homeless
women. We felt this was our opportunity as women to help other women. What
follows is a little information on what Rosie's is and why we are proud to
sponsor them. For more information on the game or Rosie's Place, contact
Dee Anderson, Delni::D_Anderson. The game will be held at the Nashoba Regional
High School, Rte 117 in Bolton. Contests at 6:00, Game begins at 7:30.
The following are excerpts from Rosie's newsletters.
Rosie's Place is a community seeking to empower, enable and enhance the lives
of poor and homeless women. Recognizing that for many women, providing for
their children is also a basic need, Rosie's Place extends services to women
with children where possible. It is not funded by city, state or federal
government. Through contributions from folks like us they "continue to be
there for those who have no one there for them" for the last 16 years, the
first women's shelter in the COUNTRY!
Homelessness can be taken lightly only by those who have never carried all they
possess - often castoffs salvaged from other people's trash - in paper bags.
For those consigned by mental illness or poverty to sleep on the streets
regardless of the weather, homelessness is a bitter reality. Their needs are
not only not being addressed, They are being denied. Who are they:
1)Poor women who simply cannot find an affordable place to live
2)De-institutionalized women released from mental health systems
with little more than Rosie's address in their pocket.
3)Women and children who are now homeless
4)More and more elderly homeless
5)Minority women who are homeless, drug addicted and/or have AIDS
For years Rosie's has been providing meals, overnight shelter and clothing to
homeless women and children. Rosie's has begun a process by which women who
want something more than a bed in a shelter can have access to house or
apartment locations, jobs, education, medical care, psychiatric care or
whatever they want for 30 to 60 days or more, if necessary. It is their feeling
that if they can help 100 or 200 or 300 women out of the poverty cycle, it is
better than being part of a shelter system that merely beds and feeds them!!!!!
Rosie's is going to concentrate on getting women off of the streets permanently
and settled into a life THEY, the women, want.
*** WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP OTHER WOMEN HELP THEMSELVES ***

| This event is the brainchild, by the way, of Richard Skorman, former
operator of the now defunct Poor Richard's Cinema, and author of the
book "Off-Hollywood Movies: A Film Lover's Guide". Some of the
members of the honorary board of directors of the U.S. Environmental
Film Festival include Cesar Chavez, Ted Danson, Mike Farrel, Jack
Lemmon, Lynn Redgrave, and Dennis Weaver, various executives within the
Entertainment industry, several prominent Colorado politicians,
Colorado Springs business executives, and others.
Although there are several similar events in Europe, this is being
touted as the first environmental film festival in the U.S. My
understanding is that they do intend to make this an annual event.
