The parties announced in this file will be open to all members of
the womannotes community. From time to time however, we may wish
to hold woman-only gatherings*. Those parties will be announced by
VAXmail; to that end, the moderators will keep a distribution list
of those women who would like to be notified of these events. If
you'd like to be added to or removed from the list, please contact
    me at mewvax::augustine.

I am currently organizing a party in the "restaurant review"
conference. Since I'm the organizer, I think I can announce it
elsewhere also. Since I enjoyed the last womannotes party I'm
       announcing it here.

The party will be for the appreciation of Thai cuisine. My wife
(who is a Thai chef by profession) will be proposing the menu
within the constraints of what the restaurant can (and are
       prepared to) offer

See TGIF::EATS note 813 for details. If you are interested
please reply in EATS, not here. Thank you.

proposed dates are the Fridays in August except the 12th (the
date of the next wommannotes party).

Well just about every other notes conference seems to have had a
noters party, so why not this one.

I propose that we have an evening get together at the Giant of
Siam (Thai) restaurant in Nashua NH, some time in August (to
give me time to do the logistics). If you are interested reply
here. I will negotiate with the management to provide a "special
buffet" style meal with a good range of different Thai foods,
       both main course and starters.

I would expect a price per head in the 10-15 dollar range
(probably lower rather than higher) depending on responce.

Anyway lets get the ball rolling and I'll get the logistics
       going later.

       regards

       /. Ian .\

I would delete 9.6, but though I wrote it, I put it in the wrong
place and it got posted here by Bonnie, so now I can't delete it
       :-(

Anyway, after the voting and whatnot, here is the updated
information on this "Thai Ahan Di" festival. For those not
interested I include a form feed. If you are interested please
add you name in EATS note 813.

Well the voting is closed and by a short head we have a winner.

So the party will be Next Friday, August 5th. We will start to
serve soup and appetizers at 7:00 PM, and the main course at
7:30 PM. The restaurant is open until 10:30 PM or later so there
       won't be any hurry.

The menu is as follows: (* = mild, ***** = dragon fodder)

Please note: this is a NO COMPROMISE meal. Each dish will be
cooked as the chef believes it aught to be cooked to get the
most from the delicate flavors of the spices, meats and
vegetables it contains. Thai food varies from mild and innocuous
to extremely spicy (dragon fodder :-)). The only VERY hot item
on the table will be the Som Dum, and those who are not
absolutely certain that they can eat and enjoy very hot food
would probably be well advised not to eat much of this dish!

However nobody has ever died from eating Thai food to our
knowledge, so relax and enjoy. However two pieces of advice are
       in order:

       1) If you intend sampling several dishes, we suggest you start
with the mildest and progress to the hottest, else your taste
buds may be overloaded preventing you from truly enjoying the
       more delicate dishes.

       2) Thai spices are oil based. If you should accidentally 'burn'
your mouth, we suggest you DO NOT drink water as this will
spread the oil in your mouth and make the sensation worse.
Instead take a mouthful of rice, or vegetables. If you feel you
must drink then drink something sweet (Coca Cola, or sweet iced
tea or coffee are best, though beer has proven very efficacious
       also).

                               BILL OF FARE
                                   SOUP

       Choice of:

            ** Tom Yum

(clear soup with chili, lemon grass, lime juice
& mushrooms with choice of chicken, shrimp or
               squid)

            *  Tom Kha Kai

(chicken in coconut cream soup with galanga,
lemon grass, lime juice and cabbage)

            *  Winter Melon Soup

(chicken, shrimp, coriander, pepper and fish
               sauce)

** Giant Hot & Sour Soup

(pineapple, tomatoes, onions, hot peppers and
scallions with choice of chicken or shrimp)

            * A Vegetable soup (see below).

The rest of the menu will be served buffet style:

                                APPETIZERS

            *  Siam Roll

            ** Tod Mann

         ***** Som Dum

                                  ENTREES

               White Rice

            *  Pad Thai (Plain)

** A vegetarian dish (see below).

         **** Lap Kai

**** Kaeng Nur (Red Curry beef)

*** Kaeng Massamun Kai (Chicken Massamun)

           ** Pla Jain (fried fish)

          *** Yum Talae

(combination of shrimp, clams and squid, with
               stir fried vegetables)

            * Shrimp & Vegetable stir fry

       ==================

       Beverages:

water is free: you may order soft drinks, hot or iced tea and
cofee, wine or beer. We will have Kirin, Sapporo and SINGHA beer
       available. Please pay the waitress.

       Sweet:

you may order a sweet from the menu: We suggest that you order
on arrival. Please pay the waitress.

       Logistics:

The meal is $12.50 per head. To make things easier we are
providing "tickets" with a tear off strips for the soup and
sweet orders, and sticky label "badges" so that we all know each
other, these, together with a sign in sheet will be available at
the hostesses desk. To make things simple please pay $15 to
cover the basic cost of the meal, NH meals tax and the tip on
arrival. Other charges (drinks and sweet) are your personal
       responsibility.

       Vegetarian food:

The vegetarian soup and vegetarian entree are really "special
order". Please let me know by close of business on August 4th if
you need these items so that they will be available for you.

9.8More on the Thai party.CSSE32::PHILPOTTThe ColonelMon Aug 08 1988 13:1227
When I started organizing this party in TGIF::EATS I was a little
worried about getting the necesary 24/36 people for the price
break and extra food items. So I advertised it in a few extra
conferences. Numbers continued to grow and a week before the day
       I had 44 people registered.

The day before I had 74. When I left on the day of the party I
       had 82.

We actually had over a hundred attending!

I certainly haven't ordered my thoughts to the point of entering
a party report but I shall be doing so.

The question now (please send me mail rather than clogging up
this conference) is: is there a call for doing something similar,
perhaps as "just" a womannotes party? And if so when? (I favor
late October myself, but am open to suggestions).

One suggestion was that we could consider having Thai cooking
lessons (though I have no idea at this point whether the Giant of
Siam could handle this, I might be able to arrange it at the
       Bangkok Oriental Cuisine in Merrimack)

It's been a long time since the last HUMAN_RELATIONS noters' party,
so I think it's about time we had another one. Furthermore, I am
going to take the plunge and offer to host said party at my (sorta)
    new house in Nashua.

The date I have in mind is Saturday, September 17. I figure to
start around 4PM, and continue through whenever... I have a small
gas grill, and folks are invited to bring food, beverages, and
    themselves!

If you would like to come, please "sign up" either as a reply to
this note or by MAIL to me. I will periodically update and post
a list of attendees - if you wish to not be included on the posted
list, just let me know. If you want to mention what you might bring,
that will add to the fun. (I think I will make an ultra-delicious
chocolate dessert that I have only made once before - Dione Lucas'
    "Chocolate Roll".)

    See you in September!

9.15Summary of 3 Dec. partyULTRA::WITTENBERGSecure Systems for Insecure PeopleMon Dec 05 1988 13:4839
We had a rather small (non-)party Sat. This is not an official
party for three reasons: We want to have another larger party
soon, and don't want to have too many official parties. We didn't
have a quorum. We only had enough leftovers for a week, instead of
the traditional month following a real party.

In any event, those who did find their way had a good time.

Thanks to =Maggie for the name tags, and lots of people,
particularly Jody and Bonnie for the help setting up and cleaning
    up.

I sure hope so. . .if you weren't I must have either have been
    not-there or must have met not-you. . . Ordinarily I wouldn't
worry, but I thought I saw one of the guests off to the side,

          > Be careful what you ask for... :-) Is this anything like
          > "swimsuits optional"?

          > If so the East has become more progressive than thought...

Excuse me, Mr. Haynes, but the East has been this "progressive"
for a while... When I was in high school (1983) in Orlando,
Florida, I attended a costume party (at Christmas time, no less)
where 2 cheerleader friends came dressed as hot-fudge sundaes.
Their "costume" consisted of hot fudge, whipped cream, chopped
nuts, melting ice cream, and, um, a cherry. And I thought I was
being daring that night by being "Jane" (as in "Tarzan and"). It
was all I could do to keep Tarzan (my date) occupied!

          > "Lifetime achievent award" in the costume category "Most
          > Outrageous".

Yeah, I can just imagine your costume _this_ year, Mr. Charles
          "Wise-Ass" Haynes. What'll it be - a fissure :-) ?

Silly you! :-) I was wondering when Ms. Spielverderberin would
interject her words of wisdom (ha ha =m).

Aww, why'd you have to go and spoil my nice safe image of the East
Coast? I don't know ANY outrageous people out there... :-)

Anyway it sounds like fun. (now where can I find that much hot
    fudge? hmm...)

    >> "Lifetime achievent award" in the costume category "Most
    >> Outrageous".

    > Yeah, I can just imagine your costume _this_ year, Mr. Charles
    > "Wise-Ass" Haynes. What'll it be - a fissure :-) ?

No no no. We've been explicitly asked to not wear anything that is
earthquake related AND tasteless (and I agree). Given that I'm sure
to be tasteless, I'd better not be earthquake related...

As for my lifetime outrageousness, you'll just have to come out :-)
some Halloween and see! We can do the Castro, dahling, and see some
SERIOUS outrageousness. Halloween is the national holiday of San
    Fransisco!

9.40New & Improved Noters party announcement!NACAD2::KRISTYMe? Paranoid? Who wants to know?Thu Feb 22 1990 16:1327
Announcing the "Throw Back the Winter" noters' parties! It's been awhile
since there has been a general, everyone-can-come noters' dinner/dance
    party.

    Date: Friday, March 2nd, 1990
Time: 6:00 pm - we close the bar down!
Place: Chopsticks Restaurant in Leominster, MA

    *ALSO*

    Date: Friday, March 2nd, 1990
Time: 7:00 pm - we close the bar down!
Place: Nan King Restaurant in Hudson, NH

Something has come up which has forced me to deliver two parties on the
same night. You have a choice now... you can go to Chopsticks (I'll
still make the reservations, although I won't be going there) or you
can go to the Nan King (I'll make reservations for there too). The
band at the Nan King will be Legal Tender, starring 3 DECcies. The
band at Chopsticks will be In Fair Way (or something like that - I had
a hard time understanding the guy at Chopsticks).

I'll need a total headcount by February 28 for both places, so mark
your calendar now and don't miss out! Send your RSVP to NACAD2::KRISTY
with info regarding which party you will be attending and reserve your
    dinner and/or dancing seat today!
