871.0. "Abortion, Who Pays?" by HENRYY::HASLAM_BA () Tue Jun 14 1988 19:49
I realize there are a lot of pro/con feelings on the subject of
abortion; however, it seems so unfair to the women left holding
the bag when they get pregnant (in spite of using birth control
measures) and the guy who helped get them that way isn't about to
do anything to help. My daughter has a close friend, unmarried, with
a young son, who is having an abortion today. In spite of her birth
control precautions, she became pregnant by her now former lover.
When she confronted him with THEIR dilema, he gave her the old
"how-do-I-know-it's-mine-unless-you-have-a-blood-test" line; so,
unwilling to have another child, she has tried to find the money
to pay for an abortion. Since she only receives $301 a month on
welfare for two people and the cost of her rent is $145.00, she
has been desperate for almost a month trying to get help.
It really burns me to think that the !@#$%^&*() who should have
the decency to help, doesn't have to worry; instead, another welfare
mother, my daughter, shared part of her check to help her friend.
Put bluntly, it SUCKS!

| On an idealistic note, if the two people involved do not want a
child out of the pregnancy, I think the man should pay at least
half. However, almost all the women I've known in this situation
have wound up paying for their own, borrowing money froms freinds
and family, or the local women's clinic fund. It sucks, but short
of making a public spectacle of a personal tradgedy (IE Lawsuit)
I don't see anyway to get a totally irresponsible person to pay
up.
My very realistic mother always counseled her daughters to keep
a savings account with enough money to cover expenses should any
of us wind up in a simalar situation.

| What a brilliant and practical idea! I'll suggest it to my daughters
too. My compliments to your mother...

| Re .1 & .2, chances are, tho, that anybody who is already a single
mother and on welfare is going to have already spent any savings
they ever had.

| Let me first say that I agree that the man should pay half the cost.
I have known two women who received abortions, and in both
cases, the men were supportive emotionally and financially. These
two couples are still together and are now very carefully practicing
proper birth control.
Sometimes there is a happy ending!
