865.0. "Quotable Quote" by HENRYY::HASLAM_BA () Wed Jun 01 1988 18:07

Last week I attended a workshop called "Today's Dreams, Tomorrow's
Realities" celebrating Women's Awareness Week at the University
of Utah. I came away with a quote that I want to share with you,
since it really "hit home" with me. It goes like this:

    "Life is not your master...
    				It is your child."

I appreciate the feeling of gentleness the quote inspires while
leaving me feeling that I am in control of my own destiny. How
    does it make you feel?

Great analogy! One aspect I love about it is the fact that in real
life as you "grow" a child, you often wonder who is teaching whom!

If the quote inspires you, great, but for me one of the key points
of being a mother is that I'm raising my children to go off and
leave me. So thinking of my life as something I'm going to raise
and push off to be independent of me doesn't make sense. I mean,
me and my life is old buddies, you know? We ain't going nowhere
    without each other.

Though I guess if you think of children as something that you
shape and mold in your own ideas of wisdom, instead of as
independent people in their own right, then it makes some sense to
    think of life that way.

Re .2, but, Bonnie, even though I want my daughter to be an independent
person in her own right, I also want us to be "old buddies", too!
We enjoy one another's company now and I hope to always be able
to count her among my closest friends.

As far as the quote goes, I don't really see life as either my master
or my child. Maybe more like a salesperson that I have to barter with
    for good deals!

Lorna, your first paragraph says very succinctly what I was trying
to say -- I hope my daughter will always be my friend, and I hope
my life and I will always be friends, too.

Wish I had your talent for getting to the heart of the matter instead
of talking around it all the time.

I like the child - life analogy too. I mean, there are parts of
my life that are independent of my control, such as friendships
or things I've built. They may start out from me, and get some
nurturing from me, and sometimes even come back to me, but the pleasure
of them is that they aren't just me. But they are sort of like
    me, too.
