844.0. "Speakers wanted for womens group" by OURVAX::JEFFRIES (the best is better) Wed May 11 1988 14:47
I have just been elected vice president of Women in Business, a
womens organization in the Sturbridge, Charlton, Southbridge area.
Part of my responsibilities are to get speakers for the monthly
breakfast meetings and to plan the annual seminar.
Our primary focus is to support women who are reentering the work
force, starting up new businesses, redirecting their careers, and/or
recently single. We have a membership of about 125 women from all
different areas of the business world, some are employers, some
employees.
Now, what I am looking for is some help from the men and women in
this notes file. I need names of organizations, groups and individuals
who would be available to our organization as speakers.
Most of our meetings are breakfast meetings that only last about
an hour, there will be some evening meetings starting in the fall.
Our seminar is usually in March and is at least one full day with
work shops, breakout groups and things like that.
I would appreciate any and all help. I have given only a brief
overview of WIB, but I think it's enough to let you understand what
we are trying to do.
Thanks

| The YWCA in Worcester is a great resource. Talk to Myla Clark -
she should be able to help you out.
FYI, I belong to Worcester Business & Professional Women and each
meeting is chaired by a different member who is responsible for
finding a location and choosing a speaker. Takes the brunt of
the work off one person (she has a committee, as needed) and
encourages networking.
Good luck,

| There is an organization called 'Toastmasters' which is a group
for helping people become better public speakers. I think they
have a conference. Maybe some of their members who are also
DEC employees could help you out.

| The YWCA in Framingham has an annual "Woman of the Year" award with
several runners-up nd honorable mentions. Several women from DEC
have won/been nominated, etc. You might want to contact them for
leads.
You might also want to check out recent issues of "Working Mother"
for topics of interest. You might find that some of the contributors
are from the Boston area.

| there's a dynamite woman who is an administrator at Minuteman Tech.
High School in Lexington, MA. She also runs the non-traditional shop
group, and has a lot of experience on the slant of women in business
having been (she may well still be) the only female administrator at
the school. Her name is Bev Lydiard, and the school is on Marrett Rd.
in Lexington. I am sure she is a member of some groups who may
also speak to our group? Last I checked she was still there, but
if she's moved on to bigger and better things - try to track her
down.
give it a go - who knows?

844.5 | from Clark University | EDUHCI::WARREN | | Tue May 17 1988 12:33 | 12 |
| I am a co-owner of a new small business in Westboro and, because
of that I went as a guest to a recent meeting of Westboro/Northboro
Chamber of Commerce. (We'll join when we can afford it!)
Anyway...the speaker was a woman from Clark University who talked
about sexual harrassment and what it means to the small business
person. She was very good. I don't remember her name or title
off hand, but if you're interested, I'll look them up and send them
to you.
