804.0. "Attention Noters!" by DANUBE::B_REINKE (where the sidewalk ends) Wed Apr 13 1988 10:14

Do you feel that you have been attacked or harassed in womannotes?
Do you feel that you will never enter a note in =wn= again without
    multiple disclaimers?
Do you feel that there is a private clique that lays down the law
    and runs the file?
Do you get so angry at what you read in the file that you decide
to del ent womannotes and leave the file to the 'loonies'?
Do you feel that you agree with those in mennotes who write that
if you open your mouth in womannotes the goderator/moderators or
the thought police members will skin you alive?

Well there is a cure for this condition!

    It is called *writing*.

If you feel that someone has jumped on you unfairly - write to
them and explain why...they may not have any idea that they did
    that.
If you feel that there is a party line...write your own notes, argue
back! The only party line is that one created by the active writers.

If you don't agree with what someone says, enter a note and say so.

If you feel that the moderators are unfair...write to them and let
    them know.

Remember *only you* can make the file what you would like it to
    be!

and do try to remember that the point of a discussion is not to
convince everyone else that you are right, but rather to share
    opinions.

    Bonnie

p.s. and remember also that the moderators will be glad to enter anonymous
replies for anyone who so requests.

(This note was inspired by some of my recent mail :-) )

Good point Bonnie, and i, for one, have asked Bonnie to enter
some anon notes for me because I want some opinions on some quesstions
that you noters didn't know what gender it was comming from. Whether
or not some of you will admit it you have bias opinions on replies
that come from males and females.

	Ref .2

Fine, if you don't want men in here or you feel that men should
only make themselves heard when they have something "substantial
to contribute", but I do not think .0 reference was related to men
alone. Check out the introductions made by women, and the frequent
comment that "I have being read-only for a long while etc etc".
The fact that women need a forum for expressing themselves is
undisputed but some women views do not conform to the "norm" in this
notesfile, and a fear of retaliation from others is so overwhelming
that they prefer to "keep quite".

    	> only make themselves heard when they have something "substantial
    	> to contribute"...

The tone of your reply to Mr. Thompson leaves me wondering if
you *realized* that you were talking to a man.

    	Did you?
804.6Didn't wanna checkOKYAH::SCOTTBeware the fury of a patient noterWed Apr 13 1988 12:523
No, I did not feel the need to check the sex of who I was talking
to, since I was not responding to the person's gender but the
	comments made.
804.8Sometimes gender *does* make a difference...NEXUS::CONLONWed Apr 13 1988 13:0613
    	RE: .6

Just wanted to set the record straight (because I *do* happen
to think there is a big difference between a member of *one* group
saying that the *other* group should be excluded and a member
of the *same* group saying that his *own* group -- including
    	himself -- should be excluded.)

Eagles (Mr. Thompson) was trying to be nice, but it doesn't help us
if he causes someone to get mad at the whole file for his wish
that members of his OWN GENDER keep a low profile here.

    	(Again, sorry for the tangent.)
804.10Not too serious pleaseDANUBE::B_REINKEwhere the sidewalk endsWed Apr 13 1988 13:3213
    to clarify...

My original note was meant to be a somewhat tongue in cheek
attempt to encourage people to write more, and the particular
thrust was aimed at middle of the road women as much as anyone.

This wasn't meant to start up any kind of discussion on whether
a particular gender or group was welcome.

Personally I have been very pleased with the quality of the
    discussions in the file lately.

    Bonnie
804.11If it wasn't *meant* to start up a discussion, then...NEXUS::CONLONWed Apr 13 1988 13:377
    	RE: .10

Perhaps the basenote would have been more effective (as a
suggestion) if it had been written in 1.* with the other helpful
hints and policy statements about the file.

Re .11: I agree. I thought that the base note was well put, but
now it seems to have spawned another of those endless self-defining
things that (I thought) we'd put a moratorium on.

Basically, I find *any* topic of conversation more interesting than
"What shall we talk about" and "Who shall we permit to talk about
    it".

Unfortunately, it's impossible to comment on the self-referential
stuff without contributing to it - so I'll stop now!

To prevent a round of process oriented notes I am going to
set this note no write for at least a while..

anyone who would like to comment on it to me please send
    me mail...

and otherwise, if the base note applies to you at all...then
    please write more.

    thanks
