I was not sure whether I should enter this here or not. The walk
is in Massachusetts, there are a number of walks in this area on
Good Friday and in May so I would encourage anyone interested to
send me mail and I will tell you about the ones I know about.

The "From All Walks of Life" walk for AIDS research/care is 5 June.
It's a fairly short walk (10 km, which is about 6 miles) but they get a
good crowd and it's a good cause.
If you're interested in walking, contact AIDS Action Committee in
Boston (where the walk is); if you're interestedin pledging, contact
anyone whose personal-name field indicates that their walking (see
above).

For those in the Acton/Concord area, there's the "Crop Walk", which is
a local version of the Walk for Hunger. I believe that it's held in the
fall, and they support good causes (like The Community Supper, the food
pantry/soup kitchen/clothes cupboard that I work at). If you're
interested, I can find more information for you.

This material was prepared for people in LKG. However most of it is
generic. I think the Walk is a good cause and am doing what I can to
promote it. I edited the material below from materials Project Bread
provided.

Will you join the WALK FOR HUNGER? Last year 25,000 people and their
sponsors raised $1,750,000. The need increased 17% in 1987. This
year's goal of $2,000,000 would cover the increased need and might
allow expanding or adding programs. If everybody in LKG will pledge a
dollar a mile with matching funds from Digital we can raise over
$40,000 for this cause.
How big is the problem of local hunger in America? In 1987 meal
programs in Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston Area alone, served
more than 4 million free meals ... 206,409 meals a month is 17% more
than 1986 ... 60,388 individuals (16,600 families) received food from
food pantries each month too. Next time you are in Boston look out at
the local kids on the street and remember that one third of all
children in the city of Boston are poor? Every third kid you see
lives at, around, or below poverty level?
The WALK FOR HUNGER, sponsored by PROJECT BREAD a non-profit,
non-denominational agency dedicated to feeding the hungry began in
1969. PROJECT BREAD raises funds through the annual WALK FOR HUNGER,
as well as through private and corporate donations. The funds raised
are distributed to over 200 soup kitchens, food pantries, shelter
feeding programs and urban gardens in Massachusetts. In addition a
small percentage of the funds is allocated to international programs
feeding the hungry abroad. Grants are allocated by PROJECT BREAD on
the basis of need in a community. Sometimes emergency funds are
granted on the basis of unusual need throughout the year, and
particularly during the holiday season and the winter months. The
PROJECT BREAD HUNGER HOTLINE established the first information center
for food and anti-hunger advocacy in Massachusetts.
The Walk begins at the Boston Common it goes west to Newton Center,
North and east back through Cambridge and finishes back in the Common
twenty miles later. Some people that walk are old. Some carry their
children all the way. Get out for a worthy cause! Don't be a wimp.
If you can not walk would you please support a co-worker that can?
Pledge sheets and information are available from Health Services. For
more information you can reach me via E-mail NSSG::WALK or call me at
dtn/226-5918.
Thanks in advance

| The need for programs like Project Bread and the various walks against
hunger is staggering.
On the whole, Acton, MA, is a well-to-do community. I was amazed to
find that there are any hungry people there, much less that there are a
lot of them. The food pantry that I work at (we give out groceries,
clothing and serve a hot meal) attracts more and more people as time
goes on. There really are people who live in their trucks, and people
who end the month with no money. I've met some of them, and it's really
frightening. They're just regular folks, like you and me. They could
be, and probably are, right around you, at work and at home.
The work that we do may not bring people up out of poverty; that's
frustrating. We can, however, keep them from starving, and that's
important.

| The Walk for Hunger was , by any measure, an unqualified success......
despite the drizzle and cool weather.
My wife and I set out from the common at 7:30 a.m. and finished
the 20 miles back at the common at about 11:45 a.m. wet, tired,
and wondering why the sun broke through only after we finished!
Reports have ot that some 3 million was pledged for the walkers
... It is reported that it is the largest walk of its kind.
A significant aspect of the experience is that people of all ages
and backgrounds congregate and mingle and keep each others'
spirits up for the single reason of helping out the hungry.
