764.0. "LEAR'S MAGAZINE" by NSG022::POIRIER (I know 2 cats that need love) Wed Mar 16 1988 10:59

I just read this article on a new magazine called "LEAR'S"...Has anyone
read it or seen a copy of it yet...The following is an article
partially reprinted with no permission - it makes LEAR'S sound pretty
    interesting.

"Cheek resting gently on folded arms, the attractive, dark-eyed woman
stares from the page with that familiar cover-girl gaze. But wait.
Aren't those wrinkles on her forehead? And creases in her cheek? "At
last!" declares the cover line. "A magazine for the woman who wasn't
    born yesterday."

"..The brainchild and namesake is Frances Lear...the new magazine is
dedicated to the proposition that "women over 40- yesterday's 'mad
housewives' - are today's sanest, most creative, most interesting
    Americans."

...After years of watching women get pushed aside at an age when many
men reach their prime, Lear, 64, wants to change the way women over 40
perceive themselves and are perceived by others.

...Such themes- independence, job fulfillment and spiritual renewal are
central elements of LEAR'S. Devided into five sections, including
"pleasures" and "Self Center," the premiere issue features an interview
with Philippine President Corazon Aquino and original fiction by Doris
Lessing. There are also inspirational profiles of half a dozen
exemplars of the Lear's woman, a combination of elegance, success and
self-awareness. Most revolutionary are the fashion pages, which
feature models ranging from 33 to 60. "We are breaking the perception
that age is dowdy," says Fashion and Beauty Director China Machado,
58, once of Harper's Bazaar. The only problem she notes is with the
"male photographers...The poor guys are taking some time to adjust."

...Of course their are the current census projections: by 1990, more
adult women will be over 40 than under."

I forgot to mention that this article I read and reprinted was in TIME
magazine...I figured if I reprinted it without permision I better at
    least give them some credit!

Just curious what others thought about the new LEAR'S Magazine and if
    anyone has seen it yet??

    Hi,

It sounds like a good magazine, if you come across it please
let me know the publisher's information and price of the
magazine. Since MS has sold us out I'd love something
    interesting to read.

Egad. When I read .0, I thought "Neat. I'd like to read this, but
    I don't want to wait till I'm 40."

    And then it hit me...

    I'm (almost) 42.

I qualify! Where can it be found?

764.5Available in Maynard and other big citiesBRONS::BURROWSJim BurrowsFri Mar 18 1988 12:348
My mother couldn't find a copy in the Merrimack area, so since I
live in cosmopolitan Maynard she asked me to get her a copy. I
found it at the Paper Store. There were quite a few. This was
about 2 weeks ago. It looked pretty interesting, plus or minus
the differnce in viewpoint of an under-40 male. If no-one has a
copy I could get the publisher's info from my mother.

    they subscribe! Sounds terrific!

Just an aside: Frances Lear is the ex-wife of TV producer Norman
Lear. There was a review of the magazine last week in either the
Globe or the NY Times, I don't remember which. Sounds interesting

764.10Ijudged the book by it's ads...GNUVAX::QUIRIYWed Mar 30 1988 14:2312

I'd be interested in hearing reader's comments. I read the news
story too, about Lear's and was interested. I saw a copy on some
magazine rack in the Maynard area and flipped through it, intending
to buy a copy, but I was "turned off" by the ads featuring the usual
anorexic-looking young things. The fashion feature (or features) does
use older women as models, but the advertisements didn't.

It's probably not easy to get clothing desginers to hire older women
to model their creations, but it discouraged me.

re: .10 A good friend of mine is a fashion model and she is 56
years old. More and more fashion designers are hiring
older models. Also, more designers are hiring "not-so
thin" models. I guess they are finally waking up to the
fact that not all of us look like Christy Brinkley. (thank
              goodness).
