698.0. "Shall We Make A Fresh Start?" by VIKING::TARBET () Tue Feb 02 1988 13:38

    Our second anniversary as an active community is coming up in April,
    and we were thinking that perhaps that would be a good time to archive
    the file and restart it fresh.

    Issues?  Comments?

    Since a good many of the newer notes are still quite active, is
    it possible to archive , say, the first 5-600 notes and keep the
    rest ? Not familiar with the procedures personally.
698.2yes, but...LEZAH::BOBBITTOnce upon a time...Tue Feb 02 1988 14:136
    I would not mind if it were archived, but I hope it is left available
    in read-only mode so that people who are just joining us can learn
    from it as we have.

    Perhaps you should consider waiting till May when the 3 month trial
    will be over. Then the results could be the basis of the next file.

    /Les
698.4I agree. Archive in May.VAXRT::CANNOYLet's snark out tonightTue Feb 02 1988 14:3526
    I think this is an excellent idea. I like Les's suggestion of waiting
    until the experiment is over and then restarting. I hope that this one
    will simply be write locked and a new version started. I'd also suggest
    that one of the first notes contain the complete directory of this
    conference. For example 2.1 could contain the directory 1-last and 2.2
    contains the directory last-1. I have found this to be very helpful in
    other files.

    The main thing I like about this idea is that the focus
    could/maybe_ought_to change.

    I would put forth as an idea to be explored that the moderators
    look into contacting Barbara Walker in the Valuing Differences dept.
    of Personnel. I would suggest that this conference become a *real*
    Valuing Differences conference. Currently is is simply another employee
    interest conference and has no official status. I feel if we get
    participation/approval/whatever from Personnel, as other conferences
    have, that there would be a stronger focus and purpose to Womannotes.

    This doesn't mean it will be a members-only conference, quite the
    contrary. I simply think that with a more clearly defined charter
    that has received some sort of official approval and sanction, that
    a lot of the hotly contested topics of discussion on process will
    not be necessary.

    We are exploring the possibility of working more closely with the
    corporate Valuing Differences staff at this time.

    Maybe it's a reference to Papal Bulls ? As in 'keep the church out
    of this !' only substitute Personnel for church ? Do we want this
    conference run by Personnel ? A little bureaucracy goes a long way.

698.10Allow an orderly transitionAQUA::WAGMANQQSVWed Feb 03 1988 20:387
One thought: if (when) you move to a new file, you might want to have a
period during which it was permissible to reply to old notes in this file,
but not permissible to start new notes. This would allow current discussions
to continue to completion without requiring a lot of (incovenient) cross
referencing between the two versions.

    Another alternative which was used by the ALL-IN-1 v. 2 conference
    when it got enormous was to take the notes which were active and
    transplant them to the new conference, and leave the full 'old'
    conference open for reading.

    Any thoughts on that?
698.12Good idea Holly.BUFFER::LEEDBERGAn Ancient Multi-hued DragonThu Feb 04 1988 11:1311

    That is the best idea yet offered. As long as it is a simple
    process I would like to see the current active notes carried
    over to the new file.

    I would suggest extensive keywording of the archived topics, with
    a reccommendation in the welcoming to use the keywords to find the
    appropriate/important/funny/etc, er, strings :)

698.14CADSE::GLIDEWELLPeel me a grape, TarzanFri Feb 12 1988 00:1621
   My first brainstorm: archive everything from the beginning of
   time, which we all know as Note 1.0 on 4/18/86 (thank you, Maggie
   Tarbet) up to the start of 1987 -- but that's note 157! To make this
   easy to see:

      4/18/86  1
      1/07/87  157
      2/22/88  714  (that's 557 notes in 14 months)

   So here's my current brainstorm:

   o Archive 1 through 600 and allow it to be read only.
   o  Recreate the file by:

            - Preserving notes of special interest to the community, such
              as 1.*, intro from women, intro from men, and any others the
              moderators want.

            - Preserving 600 through N as the "living" portion of the file
              (so the living file contains stuff like "see note 213" but
              that's OK. Life is messy. We cn handle it).

    umm ... -.1

    This could be an appropriate time to de-segregate the intro topics.
    It's a small detail but, as I recall, the split was accidental to begin
    with.
