591.0. "MODerating the heat? Where to draw the line..." by ASD::LOW (Merge with Authority) Fri Dec 11 1987 16:09

In the history of this file, we've all seen planty of flames...

However, it appears that things are out of hand once again.

I would like to commend our moderators for allowing discussion
that they way not agree with. They have done a great job at allowing
inter-personal discussions that many of us feel strongly about.

However, it is my *personal opinion* that perhaps a little moderator
facism might cool things off. Topics that are more person vs. person
should be done via Mail and "set/hidden" if they are of no benefit
to the community. Also, replies that are general flames could be
    set hidden.

Granted, this would be a departure from the usual style of this
    note, but it may help.

I would like to get people's opinions on this. Agree? Disagree?
Want to catch me in a dark alley?

    Dave

ps I still think the current system is a great system - ideally
In practice it can lead to "dele entry womannotes" discussions.

    Dave,
I essentially agree with you. i think that it would help if the
moderators stepped in a little more often. i also think that the
mods are at one end of the spectrum, while "fascists" are at the
other. i don't think that either of us are asking them to slide
    to the other end.

p.s. oh no! now people are going to leave because we're talking about
    process again! arrrgh!

p.p.s. i'd once again like to thank bonnie and maggie for the job
    they've done.

Me too, Dave. Although I personally don't find myself getting
rattled by much that goes on here (having served time in the
Army, prison, and manufacturing tends to toughen one's skin
a tad. . .), I nonetheless think that the conference in general
would benefit by a little more intervention. This, to me, is
a reflection of how Bonnie and Maggie have moderated to date.
I think they've repeatedly demonstrated fairness, cool-
headedness, and compassion and I therefore trust their judegements
in moderating both implicitly and explicitly.

I am firmly convinced that people who ask for more moderator
action are people with no idea what so ever of what it takes
to moderate a conference of this nature.

    Two quick points.

    1) Maggie and Bonnie spend far more time moderating this file then
most of you have any idea of. Moderating a file like this is
far more then just reading every note and hiding and moving things
when they get out of hand. There are constant questions (by mail
and phone) from new Noters. There is regular handling of complaints
against individuals and Notes. There is regular mediation (by
phone, visit, mail) between people who's Notes disagreements
spread into real life. Well, I could go on, but you get the picture.

[I'm assuming this describes what Bonnie and Maggie go through
based on my experience moderating Valuing Differences conferences.
I'm sure they'll correct me if they have it easier then this.]

    2) Over moderation always backfires. Believe me I've been there.
It is a fast way to destroy a conference and moderators. In fact,
is a race to see which dies first.

Sure and pouring gasoline will put out fires too. I promise this
       will *not* work!

One last hint. You don't have to be a moderator to suggest that
people cool down. You don't have to be a moderator to act as a
peace maker. You don't have to be a moderator to NEXT NOTE or NEXT
    UNSEEN.
