539.1 | where would I be without ME? | JUNIOR::TASSONE | Nov. 9, Cruise time | Wed Nov 04 1987 16:53 | 8 |
| Success, to me means achievements, tiny as they may be, to a better
and fulfilled ME. Any small step towards "total" and gratifying
happiness is what being successful is to me.
Being good at what you do and feeling great about who you are is
also successful. To me.

| Success to me means accomplishing the goals in my life that I have
set for myself. Eventhough those goals change daily!

| My folks are a success. They raised 3 boys and one black sheep (yours
truly), all to be successful. They have 3 grand-kids and 2 on the way.
They own their house, a car, an old truck and a spiffy hippie van. They're
retired, have their health and their minds are intact (okay, so ma did
get a little crazy at the Mardi Gras that one time, but hey, she coulda
won that wet t-shirt contest ;-)). They can do what they want when they want,
and they're having a wonderful time doing it. They've been to all 48
contiguous states and much of Canada. As far as I'm concerned they have
the world by the balls. But the best part about my folks is...well...
they're mine.

| I think one of the signs of my youth/stupidity/inexperience/immaturity
is that I haven't yet found a good workable definition of success.
I HAVE found a couple definitions of what it isn't though:
I DON'T have to be the best at anything to be successful. There
is ALWAYS someone better at it (no matter what "it" is).
I DON'T have to make others happy to be successful. I am responsible
for my own happiness, as is everyone. No one can make me happy
but me, and I cannot make any person happy if they do not want to
be.
I guess being sick brings out the negative in me. I have a feeling,
though, that I won't be able to attain that elusive state of success
until I come up with POSITIVE definitions of it for myself.

| Very simply, success is when you reach a goal that you have
been striving for. So if I have a goal to be promoted, than
my manager's opinion of me is very important. But if I change
my goal to be having the knowledge or capability to do some
task, than that goal can be reached without outside opinions.
What I'm trying to say is that ideally, you are successful on
your own opinions of your actions, but sometimes goals can
depend on what others think of you. Then you might actually
have more work to do to reach that goal (some politics to do?).
So in some ways I consider myself successful. I think I know
a lot about my job and I'm very good at it. However my manager
disagrees with me about how good I am. So I have to work at
reaching my goal of promotion by finding out what things my
manager thinks I need to learn and either showing that I already
know that or learning it. And maybe some work to make myself
more "visible" as a capable person.
I also have a goal to get my addition ready for sheetrock. I've
been very succesful (with a LOT of work) at that. They're going
to come and do it this friday.
