and it's scholarship offerings, you must read Dave Barry's
article. #89 found in HYDRA::DAVE_BARRY.

| DEC IS THE FIRST ON MY LIST FOR GIVING SCHOLARSHIPS TO WOMEN. I
AM A RECIPIENT OF A WOMEN AND MINORITIES SCHOLARSHIP THROUGH DEC'S
SPRINGFILED (MA) PLANT (YOU DON'T HAVE TO QUALIFY AS BOTH A WOMAN
AND A MINORITY). THIS SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS UP TO $10,000/YEAR OF
AID. IT IS A FOUR-YEAR (FIVE WHERE APPLICABLE) SCHOLARSHIP THAT
REQUIRES STUDENTS TO MAINTAIN A 3.0 GPA. ALONG WITH THE MONEY IS
A SUMMER JOB THAT STARTS THE YEAR YOU GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL
AND CONTINUES DURING THE CONSECUTIVE SUMMERS WHILE IN COLLEGE. THE
EXPERIENCE AND EXPOSURE TO INDUSTRY IS HARDLY EQUALLED BY FELLOW
CLASSMATES. POSITIONS IN DEC FOLLOWING GRADUATION ARE NOT OBLIGATORY.
YOU MEET SOME GREAT PEOPLE THIS WAY TOO! I REALLY APPRECIATE THE
HELP THEY'VE GIVEN ME. ESPECIALLY AFTER HAVING EXPERIENCED A FEW
DISCOURAGING PROFESSORS AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL.

384.5 | some numbers for thought | WEBSTR::RANDALL | one more day -- going to miss you all | Thu Jul 30 1987 10:07 | 16 |
| One of the reasons why beauty-pageant scholarships outnumber National
Merit scholarships is that the maximum National Merit Scholarship is
still $2000 (that's what it was in 1971 when I started college and it
wasn't enough even then!!!!!), or $8000 over a four-year education.
Many of those scholarships contain restrictions as to what you can
study (for example, a number of the major chemical companies sponsor
scholarships through National Merit Scholarship Foundsation that are
available only to chemical engineering students.)
The winner of the recent Miss New Hampshire Junior Miss title received
scholarships totalling $12,000 for four years; Miss NH USA gets roughly
$20,000.
All numbers come from articles in the Nashua _Telegraph_.

| one thing that REALLY bothered me about the national merit scholarship
quotient test, was that I did really well (top 1%).....and so they
sent me a certificate saying "WOW, you did really well!".....and
also a letter saying ".....BUT, you'd have to be in the top 0.5%
to actually get any money"....and the sad things is I know two people
who went to college this year, using this national merit money at
state schools, and both of them punted entirely and failed a majority
of their courses. I asked what they were going to do. They said
they'd take the test again, and if they did equally well, they'd
receive the same amounts of money and try again.....

Even if you did qualify percentile-wise for a scholarship, you might
not have gotten the $$$$.

| The irony to me is that, according to somewhere and I forget the
source, many of the Miss America contestants drop out of college
to participate.
The whole thing (from meat market to dropping out to compete) strikes
me as tawdry. I guess Phyllis Schlafly likes it, though ;-).
