367.0. "Happy 4th, watch out for bugs" by CADSE::GLIDEWELL () Wed Jul 01 1987 23:40

Happy 4th, and my tips to survive the weekend.

1. City dwellers who are going to the country, get OFF of some good anti
bug spray. Because of the spring rains, the mousquitos are an inch
across. And the tic's are something wonderful too. Keep shoes on
    in the mountains.

2. Remember the old highway slogan, keep your car's brights on to 'remind
everyone to drive safely? Don't. Headlights are far more intense than
they used to be, when the Nat. Safety Council encouraged that practice.
Brights are now blinding to oncoming traffic.

Avon Skin So Soft bath oil works better than most of the commercial

Heard on NPR this morning that there is a warning in New England
about ticks carrying Lyme Disease. I think they said Black Deer
Ticks which are VERY small (pinhead size). Particularly infested
are the Cape and the southern coast and the Connecticut River valley
as far north as Amherst. The ticks have to be on for more than 24
hours to infect one with the disease, so do regular tick searches.

Skin search should include looking for "new freckles" or "moles"
that you didn't previously have. It is recommended that one wear
clothing that will cover the body, i.e., long sleeve shirts and
full pants, when walking in the woods.

If the parasite remains for a period of +24 hours, the symptoms
can resemble that of a flu and appear within three days.

The NPR report was (for me) just in time as I plan on hiking up
    Mt Washington tomorrow....

Perfumes are *not* modern; they're very old-fashioned.

    (Hint.) They predate soap.
