360.0. "Womyn's businesses" by ULTRA::ZURKO (UI:Where the rubber meets the road) Tue Jun 30 1987 14:26

Actually, I'm looking for the name (and number, if possible) of a
particular womyn's store. It's the one in a cluster of stores off the
main drag in P-town. It sells T-shirts, jewelry, crafts, books, music,
and so on. Can some one help me? Thanx.

The name is Womencrafts. It does have a Commercial Street address.
I'll check at home and post the full address and phone number tomorrow.

re: .1 Thanx Justine.

By the way, JEA Associates is woman owned, and often hired to give DEC
classes. On things like organising yourself, or organising a team in a
corporate culture. I took a class on organising yourself from Jane
Elizabeth Allen herself. It was a truly excellent course, with an emphasis
on finding what actually works, as opposed to enforcing theories on
what should work. All the participants got something useful and enduring
from it.

In addition to the store in PTown, Womencrafts also does a pretty
large catalog business. If you call, they might put you on their
mailing list. Hey! Maybe we could see about ordering Womannotes
T-shirts! :-)

By the way, I know of a farm stand on Rte 2 (mass.) that's woman-owned.
Would it be ok to name it here? If not, anyone who's interested
can send me mail. I always like to support woman-owned businesses
whenever possible.

re: Panetta's farm in Lincoln (herbs & harvest)

The Panetta family is a very warm group - I have met some of them (a
while ago - I'm originally from Lincoln). The mother (I believe) had
cancer several years ago (not sure what the status of it is now) and
the farmstand almost went under (due to the popularity of the stand
across the street - Lawson's). I frequent Panetta's frequently.

My little sister owns her own business!

So, next time you're in Palmdale California, eat lunch (or supper) at
The Great American Ice Cream and Candy Company. (They make a great
barbeque beef baked potatoe.) She bought out the guy who started
the business and who wasn't doing well with it.

[Crud, all I do is sit behind a terminal emulator all day.]

It's not easy having a sister with a candy store... :-)

The Sudbury Road Mobil station at 143 Sudbury Road (of course) in
Concord (369-9807) is woman-owned (her nickname is Gabby, short for
Gabrielle I presume, don't know her surname). Very competent,
straightforward woman.

Two weeks ago the water pump on my car packed in on 2 in Concord. After
considerable trials and tribs, I wound up at her station, suspicious
from the symptoms and the age of the car (114,000 mi) that maybe the
block had cracked (I didn't know how to detect a dead water pump: you
wiggle the pulley: if it does, it is). She tentatively diagnosed it as
the water pump, quoted labor at 1.5 hours flatrate, and arranged for
the car to be fetched in. A quick look confirmed her diagnosis, and I
was able to pick the car up, all mended, the next day. To my surprise,
I was billed for only 1.0 rather than 1.5 labor; she shrugged it off as
"It only took an hour". Nice.

360.16Lot's of listings of businesses!!WAGON::RITTNERWed Aug 26 1987 18:1515
SOJOURNER is a women's newspaper published in Cambridge, Mass. It
has lot's of articles about news, politics, women's issues,
personalities, health issues, etc. The editorial section is always
interesting. At the center of the newspaper they have a Calendar
listing of women's events, music, group meetings, etc. Lot's of
women's businesses all over the U.S. advertise (inns, bookstores,
massage, restaurants, etc.). I've subscribed to SOJOURNER for years.
It helps to keep me connected to women's issues and events!! I read
it cover to cover. Although I don't always agree with the opinions
expressed, they always make me think... You can call the SOJOURNER
office in Cambridge to ask about a subscription or where you could
buy single issues. You can buy single issues at NEW WORDS, a women's
bookstore on Hampshire Street in Cambridge. Enjoy!!

360.17Modern Times?DINER::SHUBIN'The aliens came in business suits'Thu Aug 27 1987 10:317
What's the deal with Modern Times in Cambridge . It's a restaurant that
appeared to be woman-owned and -run, but I've been told that it's owned
by a man instead. (If you haven't been there, it's a nice funky
restaurant on Hampshire Street. They have [or used to have] live music
sometimes, and seem to have opened a patio or something in the back.)

Modern Times was [is?] owned by women, but I've heard the same "rumor"
- that it's now owned by a man. I believe they still have music
occasionally. There is a woman-owned-and-operated restaurant on
Harvard Street in Allston named SATORI. It's about a block-and-a-half
off of Commonwealth Ave. They serve Macrobiotic food (includes fish)
that's pretty good. The carob "fudge" cake is yummy.

PS - Years ago I went to a woman-owned restaurant in Cambridge named
[I believe] Bread and Roses. I think this may have been the predecessor
to Modern Times.

Apple Country Animal Hospital (formerly Stow* Animal Hospital) is
now owned by Cindy Schaefer. She's very good with both animals and
people, and so far, we've been quite pleased.
