352.0. "I meant a Bud Lite!" by NSG008::MILLBRANDT (Think Feisty) Thu Jun 25 1987 19:30

Are the notes in this file just too deadly serious?

Certainly this file's raison d'etre is a place for people to exchange
views on the things that happen in their lives and in the world.

But a person can have only so many crises at a time. And besides,
the note for my next crisis has probably already been entered.

There's also always current events and long-standing injustices.
Discussions on these topics are fine, but...yawn...saturation.

And there have been several entertaining notes (short skirts) as
well as some personal-foible notes that may have shared some useful
info (future fathers of daughters, you too will face the Public
    Restroom Dilemma).

So is it safe to enter light notes? Can we spill out a stream of words
that might be just entertaining or humorous or fun to reply to, instead
of solving the world's problems? A little humor, a little creativity,
and you may find the next serious problem is a little easier to deal with.

um, if your "can we spill out..." means "may we..." or "is it okay
to..." then yes, by all means. Simply because life is often no joke
doesn't mean we oughtn't to laugh whenever we can.

How is humor determined ? Is it at the discretion of the
    moderator ?

    Re: .8

The only notes which get returned to the author from HUMAN_RELATIONS
are those which the moderators find inappropriate for the conference.
These typically are notes that insult other noters. Often those
doing the insulting think they are being funny, and assume that
if they put a smiley-face on a slur that they are instantly
    immune.

HUMAN_RELATIONS has three active moderators, each with somewhat
different views on life, and we prefer to try to work with noters
to revise their contributions rather than simply deleting them.
For most people this works well, for others it does not.

I am sorry I haven't kept a history of those notes we've had to
return to Mr. Faulkner so I could illustrate my point. But I expect
that as other notes read enough of his notes, they'll understand.

    Re: .9 and .11

Hold on a minute! I liked .9! Keep "not recognizing" things,
Renee. Take things at the face value as you see them, make up your
own mind about people and their contributions.

What's intriguing about notes is figuring out who is behind those
names in the upper left hand corner.

    re .13

That was "take things at face value as you see them". Leaves room
for a little application of intelligence above a pure "face value".
