311.0. "Lee Tatistcheff to give seminar" by MAY20::MINOW (I need a vacation) Fri May 08 1987 10:03

WomanNotes readers might find this interesting:

			     UNANNOUNCED SEMINAR
   ***********************************************************************

   TITLE: "ACOUSTIC MICROSCOPY AT DEC: AN UPDATE ON SLAM"

   SPEAKER:	Lee Tatistcheff, Digital

   Since its installation almost a year ago the first acoustic microscope at
   DEC, the Scanning Laser Acoustic Microscope (SLAM), has been invaluable
   in the detection of internal voids, cracks, and delaminations for many
   applications. Examples from a variety of plastic and ceramic IC
   packages will be presented by the Material and Technology Analysis
   Laboratory in Northboro (NRO).

   Lee Tatistcheff is the acoustic microscopist responsible for the
   development of acoustic imaging as a tool to help solve problems faced by
   DEC. Since completing her BS in Materials Science and Engineering at the
   Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lee has been with Digital in the
   Material and Technology Analysis Laboratory of Northboro, an analytical
   lab chartered to provide problem solving expertise and instrumentation
   for all of DEC.

Why should just women be interested in microscopy?

311.2My Two Cents!TIGGER::WOLOCHFull of Surprises!Fri May 08 1987 16:2321
    I think the point that Martin is trying to make is;

    this may be of interest to women (as well as men)

    AND Lee has made valuable contributions to this notesfile.

    (My opinion follows)
    ALSO it is refreshing to see women lecturing at some of the Technical
    Seminars.
    I know there are *alot* of women that are technically competent.
    I support seminars such as this, which give women the VISIBILITY
    that they need, but don't always seem to get.

    I was at one of Lee's seminars at LMO last year and I was *very*
    impressed.

    Wouldn't it be *refreshing* to go to an Engineering seminar and actually
    have more women in the audience then men??

    Nancy

311.3good excuse for getting together?MEWVAX::AUGUSTINEFri May 08 1987 16:286
    If womannoters are coming to HLO, would anyone like to have lunch
    before the talk (or gather and say hello afterwards)? If you're
    interested, please send me mail (on ISTG::AUGUSTINE) rather than
    replying here.

    I thought component engineers didn't contribute to this notes file!!
    (thanks, Martin... I think  :) )

    Seriously though, I think the presentation won't bore even those
    who are not component engineers, so as far as I am concerned, come
    one come all. Acoustic microscopy is not a subject a whole lot
    of people have heard of, so I have to wave my hands a lot and give
    enough background to make it comprehensible to anyone.

311.7Confused, as usual.GENRAL::FRASHERUndercover mountain manTue May 19 1987 01:596
    I think its notable that when I read this announcement, I thought
    about a fellow noter who is the speaker. I didn't even think about
    her being a woman until .1 pointed it out. Should I be proud or
    ashamed of myself?

    Re: .7

    Proud, I'd think. I had the same reaction as you, Spence, and
    am baffled by the responses that somehow seemed to think either
    that "only women would care" or conversely that "only women SHOULD
    care" that Lee was giving a talk.

    Personally, I'm pleased to see any indication that a fellow noter
    has had a significant accomplishment in business life, and being
    asked to speak on the subject of their expertise is notable in my
    mind.

    re .7 .8

    Note that my gender is not stated or implied in the announcement.
     I was thinkng of wearing a coat and tie... :)

    Lee
311.10< alas, gender implied >EMIRFI::CAMBERTue May 19 1987 15:2113

    re .9

    Actually, Lee, it does imply your gender in the sentence "Since
    completing her BS..."

    For some reason, I ALWAYS look for the gender being imbedded in
    an announcement and 99% of the time it IS there ! What this
    tells us I'm not sure.....but, my hearty congratulations to you
    in your accomplishments.
