303.0. "come on by and say hi" by IMAGIN::KOLBE (Mudluscious and puddle-wonderfull) Mon May 04 1987 21:06

I'll be at IDECUS next week and hope to meet some of my fellow (is
there a non-sexist word for fellows?) noters. I'll be giving STARS
demos (my group's product) on Thursday and hope some of you will
stop by and say hi. I'll be the loud mouth blonde at the keyboard.

P.S. we'll have some great posters but supplies are limited.

Let's not pick on "fellow" in this sense as sexist; it's an Old English
phrase that originally meant "those who work the fields together"
(actually "those who spread manure together" but I don't want to be
crude). Manuscripts from the time show references to women or to
mixed-sex groups as often as to men. (In fact, given social realities,
the comrades helping in the fields were probably women more often
    than not.)

Even today the majority of uses of the word carry connotations of
"comradeship among equals." True, it can refer to men only, as when
you refer to "a girl's fellow" (regional) or "a vulgar fellow".
However, in parts of the country you will hear women referring to
"going out with the fellows" when they mean an all-female group.

My only reservation about "fellow noters" is that I don't think
the noters I know deserve to be associated with fertilizing the
    fields!

Perhaps I will be able to come...to swim...I will be with first
woman to make the transatlantic [en brasse?] by myself.

I think I will practice swimming every night -- in my [baignoire?].

Why is it so far, America?

I WAS leading the VAX Notes Session #4 Tuesday morning, but,
became ill and left session #4 early and abruptly and am spending
Wed at home!

Do stop in to see Kristy Gleason, Audrey Schneider, Vic
Hamburger, and Alfred Thompson (to name just a few) who are
handling the crush of users interested in test-driving VAX Notes
in the Liberty Room.
