294.0. ""Sandwich Generation Dilemma"" by PEACHS::WOOD (Is it *really* Friday?? ) Fri Apr 24 1987 11:19
A Center for Women's Health and Medicine is presenting seminars
in the Atlanta area. One coming up in May is on "Daughters of Aging
Parents." It will deal with daughters or daughters-in-law who are
also mothers and the fact that those women are in the middle of
the "Sandwich Generation Dilemma." It will deal with the joys,
conflicts and resources of that situation.
My question is -- have other women experienced problems in
this area and how have they solved them. Basically I'm just looking
for information, thoughts, feelings and concerns.
I had not really thought of this issue before but now realize
that I live with it every day as I am a single parent with 2 teen-age
daughters and my mother also lives with us. I find there are times
when her values and teachings affect what I'm attempting to teach
my girls. She sometimes is frustrated by their use of the telephone,
but hesitates to ask them to get off the phone so she can use it.
(She's a very generous lady -- hardly ever makes demands of anyone.)
Basically, we all get along very well, with very few conflicts of
lifestyles.
Even tho my father doesn't live with us, I can see where there
are interesting issues in that area as well. He has told me that
he enjoys my girls now that they are older. When they were little
he didn't know what to do with them. Now they can go to movies
together and out to eat, etc.
