285.0. "Technology and Women's Employment" by DINER::SHUBIN (Go ahead - make my lunch!) Fri Apr 17 1987 15:35
I just returned from the CHI+GI '87 conference in Toronto. (The
conference was on "computer-human interfaces" and "graphics
interfaces", hence the name.)
While there, I picked up a flyer with the title, "What are the effects
of new technologies on 13 million working women's jobs?". It was
advertising a book called:
COMPUTER CHIPS AND PAPER CLIPS:
Technology and Women's Employment.
Volumes I and II
Heidi I. Hartmann, Robert E. Kraut and Louise A. Tilly, editors
Panel on Technology and Women's Employment, National Research
Council
Volume I is already out (ISBN 0-309-03688-7, 1986, 240 pages, 6x9,
index, paperbound, $19.95). It appears that Volume II will be available
soon, if it's not already (ISBN 0-309-03727-1, 1986). The publisher is
National Academic Press, 2101 Constitution Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20418.
The description of the publisher is as followers: "The National Academy
Press was created by the National Academy of Sciences to publish the
reports issued by the Academy and by the National Academy of
Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research
Council, all operating under the charter granted to the National
Academy of Sciences by the Congress of the United States."
The flyer lists some related books: "Women's work, Men's work"
($15.50), "Sex Segregation in the Workplace" (22.95), "Women, Work, and
Wages" (13.50) and "Comparable Worth" (14.50). If anyone is interested,
I can send out a copy of the flyer that I have; otherwise, write to the
publisher.
The flyer lists the table of contents for Volumes I & II. Here is a
summary:
VOLUME I

Effects of technological change: employment levels and occupational
shifts
Effects of technological change: the quality of employment

| It is also interesting to study the effect of organizational structures
on women's opportunities within the workplace. Kanter has done a lot
of research on this issue as have others. I have found that books
which present statistics on the issue are helpful to a point, but
that books on human relations and office politics are also helpful.
